  • If you've got a property with large, established trees or if you're regularly processing firewood, then you'll probably need a decent chainsaw. We prefer battery-operated gardening power tools and got the opportunity to review the Stihl MSA 120C and MSA 140C chainsaws this autumn. Stihl chainsaws have a great reputation, so we were really excited to try them out.

    I have the 140c and love it!! i've had it for about 2 years and it came with the AK10 battery, it was ok but i asked for the AK 30 for the next Christmas. The extra power was much better and run time 45 minutes to an hour. Just got the Stihl chain sparpener for it and it also works great. I have 2 other chain saws gas 18 and 20" and i only get them out when I'm working on much heavier wood for long periods of time. I highly recomend this saw!!!

      @eddie wagner : Interesting to read. I have done some investigations, and I bet 120 and 140 are exactly the same machines, hardware wise. There is no point in making different motors for such a product.
      It could be that 120 is electronically restricted, no matter what battery you use, but in your opinion, is the 120 with AK30 the same as 140? Stihl even says that running 140 with any other battery than AK30 will reduce power, so is the "reverse" true? I.e running 120 with AK30 will unleash some more power?

      I would like to know this too because that would be nice to make the 120 more powerful by upgrading the battery -

    I bought the msa140c to carry on my ATV quad bike out here in British Columbia , Canada ..convenient for random blowdowns along wilderness trails ..gas saws are far less convenient ..so often a blowdown is not cleared if a ATV quad can get over or around it ,mainly because starting a gas saw is inconvenient ..but the electric is instant on ..simple and quick to grab and cut ..I'm very impressed with the saw , my gas saws will collecting a lot of dust now

    I got my battery powered saws, because when there’s a storm, it’s too late too shop, No selection available after a storm! Just plug the battery in, after checking the bar oil, and I’m ready! They are very impressive! 😅❤

    That was unfortunately a wrong comment about the 2 in 1 Stihl sharpener...it's purpose is not to make it easier to sharpen the teeth...the purpose is that it also files down the rakers at the same time, so you always have a good depth gauge and your saw cuts optimally...seeing chips fly out of the chainsaw, not sawdust. I have it and use it and like it. Although still once in a while I need to file down the rakers individually...so the tool is not 100% effective in filing down the rakers...

    Brilliant guys, thanks a lot. Similar situation to you - smallholding, but lots of trees - and only been here a year. Already heading for a Stihl MSA tomorrow to my local dealer in the UK and I HAD been tempted towards the MSA220 - but I am now certain, I don't need to "Splash" that far, so I'll go for the 140, with the AK30 battery. I hate to admit it - but with a collection of classic motorcycles (not British therefore 😲😲😲😲😲😲) I DO care, how it looks in the bike room. I have subscribed on the back of this vid. Cheers guys

      Thanks for the comment Paul and thanks for subscribing. It’s a solid choice that I don’t think you’ll regret. It should be big enough to deal with the trees and wood you’ll be processing. I’d also get a good sharpener to maintain the chain and a decent oil. Let us know how you get along.

    I wish I could upload a picture as I have a 120 c and the motor bearing siezed after cutting up a yucca plant…
    After stripping it down I found that the space behind the motor and caseing had become fully jammed up with compacted dust which impacted the oil pump drive and forced moisture behind the bearing seal.
    Ok yucca is a wet soft mush but it’s wrecked the bearing (not replaceable ) so new motor for a two month old saw…!

    Thanks for the review I'm currently torn between the MSA120 and MSA140, I'm not a professional I'd just be using it for logs and small trees would the 120 be enough?

    • @MyHomeFarm
      @MyHomeFarm  2 года назад +2

      Hi Dave. There really isn’t much difference between them. The MSA140 will get jobs done faster and it’ll rip through larger/thicker logs quicker. That is the most important difference. If you’re a casual chainsawer like us, where we get through a few dozen logs in a sawing session, the MSA120 will be just fine.

    • @sirvozelo1
      @sirvozelo1 Год назад

      I think I don't want either one MSA120 or MSA140. for small things I prefer the 161T. I have the 161T, 220C and the MSA300. Seems to me the 120 and the 140 are very big and not conceived to work with one hand and under-power and small to work with both hands.

      Everything would be better with the AK30 because you’ll get more life from the chainsaw.

      Good question - just what I was thinking after watching a few reviews of these chainsaws - some are saying these saws are identical but just the battery being the difference - does anyone else know if the 140C is actually any more powerful or it is simply the battery making the difference?

    Interesting I was told by our popular garden machinery supplier that chainsaws were as bad as leaf blowers for battery life... Which resulted in us not getting a battery leaf blower, as we have a LOT falling in the autumn. Also I think the gentleman who taught me chainsaw safety would have had kittens watching this. Personally I would use a lot more PPE using a chainsaw.

    • @MyHomeFarm
      @MyHomeFarm  2 года назад +1

      Leaf blowers are a battery killer. Battery pole saws and hedge trimmers are extremely light to operate. A chainsaw has a medium power draw when going through larger, thicker, denser logs (25-30cm) and is very easy on the battery when sawing through branches that are 10cm.
      Loved the PPE comment. What other protective things do you use? I occasionally wear a visor, but when sawing on the sawbuck all the dust and wood shards go straight down.
