Geoff Castelucci - Sixteen Tons (bass singer VOICEPLAY) FIRST REACTION! (HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?!)

  • Опубликовано: 15 июл 2024
  • Hi Everyone!
Today we're reacting to Geoff Castelucci with the song "Sixteen Tons".
Geoff is de BASS SINGER of VOICEPLAY, an a cappella group (which I haven't done a reaction to yet either, but I definitely will in the future!).
This name was requested by someone in the comment section before, but I actually accidentally stumbled upon his channel without knowing who he was.
On my youtube feed, a video appeared on how to sing very low. During the video, he mentioned his name, which rang a bell with me. Then he mentioned he's the bass singer of Voiceplay, which has been suggested multiple times before as well. After that, he even mentioned the bass singer of the a cappella group Home Free, Tim Faust.
I was so impressed by that video that I knew right away I wanted to check out more of him.
I hope you guys enjoy our reaction as much as we enjoyed this video!
PS: Check out the funny moments at the end of the video. ;p

He said in an interview to The Charismatic Voice that this whole song was in his natural voice, no growl, no subharmonics.
His usual technique is subharmonics, but that's all his natural range.

He does use multiple registers here. You can definitely here the vocal fry register in certain places, and I'm pretty sure some of the high parts get into the falsetto register as well. Use of multiple registers is a technique that a lot of professional singers kind of take for granted, but regular people are often not aware of it, and it extends the vocal range significantly.

The only thing better than watching and listening to Geoff is watching/listening to Geoff X4.
Geoff does do some beatbox, typically when Layne is doing something else. So he has the capacity. He has described his role in VoicePlay as "singing the bass guitar". But in VoicePlay, all of the guys do everything. Eli, (pronounced el ee) is a tenor, but if Geoff is singing lead Eli sometimes fills in on bass. Layne Stein is beatbox (his description: plays drums) but has a gorgeous baritone voice as well. Geoff and Layne do most of the arrangements and videos, and sometimes Eli arranges too. Eli recently did the backdrops for "My Mother Told Me." These guys are massively talented. Geoff's range is 5 octaves.
To me, the primary distinction between the three groups is this: Pentatonix sings traditional a cappella, Home Free sings mostly country, and VoicePlay does everything. They break a lot of rules, they like to have fun and insert humor and costuming into their performances. And their harmonies, no matter who is arranging, are heart-stoppingly beautiful. To see VoicePlay being both massively silly and incredibly musical, check their cover of The Nightmare Before Christmas' song, "Oogie Boogie Man." Geoff sings lead. For something a bit more serious, check "My Mother Told Me" or "Warriors." For more of Geoff's top range, "Blackbird". To see Geoff's latest, with most of the harmonies in the basement, "The Misty Mountain."

It's not just range. When you check out more of him you will often get hit with Geoff's skill of skipping 2 octaves rather casually. Something all vocal teachers are taken aback because so hard to do. Dimash another popular singer who does it, but that guy is universally seen as unreal.

The world of acappela groups is quite a small world. They all know each other. Blackbird gives you an even better idea, Country Roads also. And High and Dry. He does a bit of beatbox but that role is taken in VoicePlay by Layne Stein. Usually. The member are all very versatile. I think the tool being hit is a lump hammer of some sort. If it's just low you want, check out his Misty Mountains Cold. As to the last note I think it was still a chest voice, but no doubt another fan will tell you. They're good at that. :) Geoff as a dwarf, hahaha. Love it.

Geoff does it all, along with the rest of the group. He is the bass, with range to the tenor range. He does do some beatboxing, although Layne does most in the Voice Play videos. He and Layne also trade off most of their arrangements, with Eli (pronounced L.E.) jumping in from time to time. Layne does most of the editing. Layne and Eli do a lot of the lighting. Some of the work takes place at PattyCake Productions, the company that Layne co-owns with Tony Wakim, an earlier member of the group. Geoff's wife Kathy does most of the camera work and occasionally, the makeup. You can't go wrong with anything these guys do!

Geoff has some good instructional videos on how to find & expand your natural singing range. Not that it ever did me any good. I never tried. But I did watch a few & they are good. I don't think this is his best video but that may be my bias against country music. I mean obviously he is good in it. I'm sure many will make suggestions for you to react to Voice Play. I think his best is 'Oogie Boogie's Song' to show off his range (at least 5 octaves). It is from the movie Nightmare Before Christmas. Some people get confused by the song if they don't know the context. But just listen to him sing & the extreme character voices the rest of Voice Play uses. 3:25 I think I have heard Geoff helping the beatboxer (Layne) a few times.

Since voices are not pegs that line up perfectly by category voice types such as bass through baritone are a spectrum. True bass from the past had a default speaking range deep in the 1st octave. They are the basso profundo vocalists that had no need to demonstrate overall range both because there was no demand for it and they anatomically couldn't.
Avi Kaplan, Geoff Castellucci, Tim Foust all have speaking voices in the 2nd octave. With techniques both old and new they can hit the notes the basso profundo can hit and extend their range 4-5 octaves because they aren't limited by suspension bridge thick cords.
Like a spectrum they are not bass they are not baritone they fall somewhere in that spectrum and their mastery of vocal technique combined with appropriate anatomy makes them stand out as incredible bass vocalists with crazy ranges.

Korean KPop singer (just won best American Song) living in S. Korea. She got hold of VoicePlay and wanted to do something with them. Ernie had his own TV variety show in the late 50s/early 60s. I remember watching the show when I was little. (Yes, I'm old.) Ernie had a deep voice, but not quite as deep as Geoff. Geoff does help out with beatboxing when Layne can use another layer. I have seen Layne play a violin in Warriors while beatboxing. Geoff's range for 2022 is B0 (in Halo theme) to A5. He's got an incredible voice.

There are the big 3 American bass singers. Geoff Castelluci, Tim Foust and Avi Kaplan. Also a couple of others - Elliott Robinson etc. It is a very rare voice type. All the basses also backup beatboxing as part of the rythmn section. The other band members also lend some support.
Here are a couple of demonstrations by Kevin and Avi of Pentatonix of how it works.

I need to take a closer look at the tools, but some of the hand tools used for mining by hand would be a shovel, pick axe, hammer (both sledgehammer and a smaller metal creasing hammer), wedges, and possibly a pan.
