    Hey Jay -
This is something that I would bet a lot of new users are definitely confused about, so you picked a great topic. I see people in the facebook forums that ask about this stuff all the time.
Anybody that frequents those forums and likes to help other people, should copy and store the shortcut link to this video, and when the topic comes up, they can just link to your video.
The little things I would have mentioned, are that probably the most used example of using mattes - especially for users of the free version of Resolve is for “ Film Grain“. The no mention of it for new users might lead them to think that this technique is different and there is some other way of adding film grain ( in Resolve there always is other ways to do everything ).
There are tons of free 4k film grain of all types where you can add the matte to the timeline node and be done. It is also way less computer processing. There are a lot of pros that still use that method in their workflows.
The other question I see in the facebook forums is “How do I render alpha”? I have only had to actually save clips with alpha a few times ever, but it seems other people want to do that, and they have no idea which codec or settings are required to do so.
Also the composite mode on video tracks , might be a tutorial all on it’s own. Most people I think without prior Photoshop or graphics background don’t really know what and why the list for composite blending modes are for - and have a tendency to just put a layer node on and play with it. The blending modes actually are designed with some of the same similarities as the mattes - where it is sectioned to use by affecting below middle grey or above middle grey etc.
Good job explaining this stuff here - You have probably given some insight to a lot of people - and of course that is the point of it all.
Cheers - chat with ya at the next live event.

Thanks so much Jim! I definitely should have grabbed some film grain mattes and used those. Total missed opportunity there! But theres still a chance for a composite mode video, so thanks for that great idea! That's going on the list for sure!

This is great. Thank you. Regarding Adding Mattes in the colour page: Now I see how it's done, it's easy. But supposing I'd never seen this tutorial and I tried to figure it out from scratch by using the manual... what would I be looking up? If you have time, please go to the manual and see if you can find where the information is (you probably will, I didn't).
This is why I'm so grateful for these RUclips tutorials. Many times I've search through the manual, done keyword searches, but still can't find what I'm looking for. Which is why I'm interested to know if you can find the relevant information directly in the manual.
Looking forward to getting some responses of _found_ manual pages (the one's I missed).

Great to see the channel growing, Jay. Been following since well under 10k subs. Just wanted to say, had it not been for all these excellent tutorials, I'd have never had the balls to make the jump to Resolve Studio. Been with it for so long now, I find working in Vegas to be more of an uphill battle, despite using it for 10+ years, lol.
Thanks a lot, and keep up the good work, man!

Great video man. I’m trying to find way to remove all the black from an image so that I can print that image on a black tshirt and the black tshirt will fill in the black parts of the image. Can I do this with davinci resolve? Can you point me in the right direction on how this is done?

  • @rodrigomacias
    @rodrigomacias 3 года назад

This video was so helpful! I didn't know how to do this in Davinci. thanks Jay!
HOWEVER… I have some discrepancies regarding the terms you use in this video 😬.
As far as I know the bigger concept is Track matte. And then Track mattes are divided into Luma matte (creating an alpha channel taking the luminance values from other footage) and Alpha matte (applying the alpha channel from a footage into another footage, like making text windows).
The UFO example is a Luma matte, because you're creating an alpha channel using the luminance values from the runwayml clip.
Now, if you want to create an alpha channel with an alpha matte, you could use (for example) the alpha channel the UFO footage already has to mask out the rest of the image.
Take this comment as a contribution I make to your channel. I love your content and I don't want to sound disrespectful, I just think that this information might help you in the future.
    Cheers.

great video and thank you for posting, I have a question about alpha mattes that aren't aligned to TC. We created our alpha mattes during filming and recorded them to a Hyperdeck, which was supposedly time code synced. However looking at the clips, I can see none of the alpha mattes received the TC. The problem now is that our tech was hitting record prior to camera recording, and so in Resolve when I add the matte in the Color page, the matte doesn't actually line up to the playback. (This was where time code sync was SUPPOSED to solve this issue)
Is there a way I can adjust the ins and outs of these mattes on the nodes in the Color page? Any suggestions on best way to work through it? Thanks!

You can use rotoscoping and/or colour selections to isolate the man in a Davinci colour node. Roll off set until your selection is white. Create an outside node and drag offset until the background is completely black. Refine using the key cleaning tools e.g. clean black, soft. Export the black and white clip. Then import this new b/w clip as a matte and continue as he shows here

This is garbage. not your vid, but resolve. there is no "add matte" when I right click. Thats not even the issue. Why is this so difficult. FCP 2 had a luma matte key you would drop on the footage and tell it which piece of footage was the matte. why does it need to be this difficult.
