Casey, I have followed your training for quite a while, through most of the upgrades. Stop using Final Cut a few years ago based on your videos. Being 75 YOA, you made this conversion very easy for me. I have even converted many of my Vietnam Super 8 films to DaVinci with great ease. All I can say is, Thank You!
Randomly viewing your videos, I am amazed how your instructions are relevant. Too many tutorials, be they Photoshop, CaptureOne, or Davinci Resolve, teach basic, but relatively useless items. Your tutorials address real-world items. Great!
I feel honored that this tutorial is meant as a intermediate course and I understood everything. But this comes from a good teacher who explains it very well even for beginners. Good job, love it!
This is a great tutorial. This is the type of medium level of Fusion technique that a lot of fusion users like me want to learn to make advance on fusion. KEEP UP GREAT WORK.
Love watching you work through a mini project. Not only do I pick up the main points, but a lot of the minor tips and techniques in your workflow. Thanks for a great video!
I made the leap to Resolve for editing and coloring a few years ago, but have been resistant to relearn compositing in Fusion. I've got a screen replacement I need to do, and this video has given me the kick in the pants I need to try to do it right in Fusion rather than going out to After Effects. Thanks!
Recreating a reddit post (video meme) from a week or so ago turned out to be good practice for me. It included a screen replacement, too, which is why I wanted to try it. I was quite proud of myself for accomplishing a more accurate motion track than the original, which had the displayed content moving at a slightly different speed than the surrounding footage, which looked odd. OP never replied to me, but if they had I would have asked what tools they used.
Being a noob in fusion, but worked a lot in Premiere and After Effects, just seeing that stuff to the left and right of the text node works like having something on top or below, helped ALOT for my confidence to start working with Fusion!
Thank you for leaving the mistakes in. Those pop up all the time and it's so helpful to know how to work through them. I like the idea of using a colored background when masking. Adds a bit of contrast to help guide the process. For the drop shadow, couldn't you use the text instead of an ellipse? Might make more sense if they shadow were more prominent.
I know this is a year old, but a REALLY good trick is to stabilize the footage so the bird so its "centered" making the roto work extremely easy. then a few nodes down the pipe, un stabilize the footage along with the roto. "lockdown" is the best investment Ive ever made for this stuff. for those of you who want to dig in a little deeper. fusion is a life saver
Just made my first roto scope on my iPad. Thank you Casey. Although the planar tracker didn’t work and my roto was not perfect, but I’m happy with what I made.
im saving this video. after working on davinci resolve for... a bit too long... this video highlights everything ive wanted to know how to do but have settled with very off manual keyframing
omg i love this. im 3 days into editing. like actually my first video editing software and youve made it a blast. i know im skipping ahead but as long as your videos are up ima just keep exploring till i know everything ! thanks guy !!!!
Thank you very much for your tutorial and all your hard work to make this video.i am wondering if there is much easier and faster way to do rotoscoping the bird by one click instead of doing it manually, like in color page with one click it track person and object . Thank you very much
We're ready for this. Bring it on! I wonder how hard it would be to composite something post-apocalyptic, like a trash fire or meteor crater, into the background to balance out the sweet wholesomeness.
Amazing tutorial. Very useful skills, presented in an easy to follow way, and of course great example with explanations for a lot of different problems one might encounter. I loved the pidgeon sound too. You're great, Casey!
@Casey Faris thank you so much for all your videos. I have a few videos that I would never have been able to complete without the information I've been able to glean from your videos!
Great one! I probably would have been lazy and put the text somewhere in the frame, where it is supposed to be in front of Mr. Polly Pidgin. But now, how could you create a little 3D effect for the text? Not shiny, glossy 3D.. just a little volume for the text, as if there really where there whilst shooting.
Hey fellow RUclipsr here! Your videos are so so great! I watched almost all of them, even if I don’t plan to go so advance on DR. I now want to make a new intro for my channel, and want to make an object (my logo in 3d) rise out of the ocean water. I know it sounds complicated, but would be greatly appreciative of any advice! I searched the internet, but did not find anything useful. Thanks so much for all your effort!
Is there a way to use the Object selection from the color page to make the selection of the pigeon easier and add that tracking data to the Planar Transform?
I am doing a bunch of track and replace screens for a video I'm working on, has anyone ever run into the problem where you create a mask and use a planar transform to move the mask, but sometimes to the mask either shrinks with the planar transform and the control handles / vertices become too small to manipulate or the mask disappears altogether? The mask still does its job, the interface for manipulating it just disappears? Also thank you for making these videos Casey I have in fact learned almost everything I know about Fusion from watching your tuts, as soon as i finish this project I am going to buy your series and go through it.
Hi Casey, I ran into a weird issue following your excellent video. When I do the steps from 14:00 onwards in your video, Resolve randomly does not show me the polygon outline with the control points. It only shows the red shape itself. When I switch back and forth between keyframes, sometimes the polygon outline with the control points come back on, sometimes it doesn't. WEIRD. Any idea what this might be? Thanks a lot for your time! It's much appreciated.
Casey bravo! But as in this case you could have used the text an inverted mask on the video track. Also if you want to show how to follow an object using a simple shape as in this case, in Fusion with the right click you can directly publish the mask points as a tracker and follow the bird😉
Hello casey. I hope you are doing well . I want to ask if there any tutorial about how to track masks in fusion ،sth like magic mask or mask tracking in the colour tab ,but for fusion
Would it be possible that the skewed text issue is because of rolling shutter in the footage? Perhaps the point tracking is that good! Please sensor makers, can we go back to global shutter, i think we're ok on light sensitivity for now.
Thank you Casey, great video, i have the M1 Max. I am rotoscoping in fusion on a 4k raw image, kinda need good playback to see if the scope follows the footage. Its not going smooth on my macbook M1. The mask is not updating always and I need to click a corner of the mask every time for it to update, and sometimes the mask is updating but the background image is not (stuck). Is there a way to make this work?
The initial track did not work because it is a planar tracker. It tracks planes. The initial plane that was selected was perpendicular to the text. The best place to track it would be the potion of the step that is co-planer to the text.
Wow! That is a pretty intense tutorial and one of the best. I do have a challenge for you. I am trying to use fusion for my Planetside 2 videos. I been struggling to find ways to make the text follow vehicles and aircraft when they fire. I really want to add text above tanks and jerk as the tank jerks when it fires its cannon. I think H Anchor might have to do with it but i am still very new to editing. A video on this type would help me out greatly.
Casey, I followed the instructions you had on a separate video, to cover up some curse words spray-painted on a wall where we filmed. It worked... except when actors walked in front of the sign (they have to, we have no choice). At that point, the actors would appear behind a sign that was supposed to be 20 feet behind them. Any suggestions?
How do we move the window with cursor? Like i know presing the ctr and then scrolling zoom on particular area yet I'm not able to move it with just curser to the other area
Presumably you could run the mask through a blur node before connecting it to the mask input later in the flow, if that gives a close enough result to the "soft edge" slider. Can't test that theory at this moment, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.
This is fantastic! Thank you for not cutting out blunders from this tutorial. BTW, zoom effects with the mouse are great, but quick zoom-in, moving around with the mouse, and then zooming out is a bit distracting. I watch your stuff full screen on my 38 inch display anyway, I can see ALL details just fine - including the reflection of you in the eyeballs of the son and dad in the sample footage. 🤣
How do I track a face if it's turning the other side several times? I want to do a kind of a basic "south park style" tracking, replacing a face. Should I chop the clip up and simply trace the face from different angles in every clip of is there a way that involves less elbow grease?
Epic. Exactly the tutorial I needed for a video… a month ago. Got a time machine? 😁 Looking forward to including this in my next project! As always, love your work mate. Thank you.
ahahah I love the pigeon so unexpected right like how life should be. Honestly it is a little complicated for me I will have to rewatch, kind of get it but kind of don't. but give a try and subscribe anyways. I found you while watching kevin's video about Davinci. A question, when it says public beta, is that meant that people will see my work? or do they need password? anything with the word public scare me.
@@CaseyFaris Thanks, that was a quick response. I am a newbie to your channel and new to youtube editing software. I been using canva and windown video editor in the past year ahha.
My video is just a moving drone shot of bridge but when I track a small rectangle near the text, it is not tracking and on bottom right its written that frames rendered:1 time taken:0. It is not rendering what should I do?
Wonderful tutorial, but LOL … it took me about 20 minutes to realise that the stockvideo you used was shot in one of the more famous places in my hometown vienna.
Hey man, would you mind doing a tutorial on how to do the black veins effect in fusion? Like the veins in the body of the talent slowly turn black? Thanks!

Vietnam? I have to check out

The best Davinci fusion channel out there
I feel honored that this tutorial is meant as a intermediate course and I understood everything. But this comes from a good teacher who explains it very well even for beginners. Good job, love it!
Now I realize the meaning of "RotoScoping" and how tedious it is. Thanks Great Teacher Casey! more power!
This is a great tutorial. This is the type of medium level of Fusion technique that a lot of fusion users like me want to learn to make advance on fusion. KEEP UP GREAT WORK.
Loved this and would love to see more intermediate Fusion tuts!!
I second this.

Awesome tutorial! I'd love to see more of these intermediate tutorials. The comedy thrown around throughout, is perfect!
Nice video as always, but what happens when you need to track the pigeon for 15 minutes?
As a newbie to DR, it's great to see how simple it is to do stuff like this - once you're more familiar with the tool 👍
im saving this video.

Hell yeah Casey! This is what we want. Save that blender stuff for another channel - this is great.
Casey that was superb! Even I might be able to do one of those and fusion does unnerve me a bit…. Thank you!
Does the END TO END work for Resolve 18? And do you need the PRO/paid version? 17 is advertised. Thanks, Casey Faris!

Thanks Casey for the video. It's always pleasure to learn from you. Keep'em coming. #2
always wondered how to do this on da vinci!
Your videos taught me so much about editing and i love that you still have more to teach
Thank you kind sir for all your easy to understand tutorials :)
This is soooo helpful. Great to see some intermediate training videos. Thanks for everything you do.
Incredible! I'm amazed
Your videos are just great, can't wait to get the paid ones 🎉
Great Video. The best bit? Where it went wrong. So informative, and when I make that mistake, now I'll recognise it. Good job, Casey.
good video, but now with davince 18.5 is can you take the pigion out with the magic mask? if yes, can you make a video how :D

Isn't rotobrush in After Effects much faster?
Can't we do this with Magic Brush?
are you making a course for version 18 now? would love to buy that!
We have VFX and compositing courses on 18 right now at ground control.film
I think the problem with the first track is because you track it's perspectives. If you only track transform, it shouldn't behave like thst
Does anyone know if it's possible to use animated text while doing this kinda tracking?
Is this just for Studio, or free too?
