    I mostly agree, but I use characters close to camera with great success.
    You just need to avoid eye contact and to much details, there fore I tend to blur or smudge them.
    Also on the point of diversity you should always use a set of characters that are appropriate for the setting.
    Maybe older people don't belong in a preschool building and people in suits usually don't go to the beach.
