Hi everybody,
David here from ViaRender. I am a teacher and professional architectural visualization artist. I have been teaching for nearly 10 years, and teaching ArchViz for 5.
I know how difficult it can be to learn new software, or to find tutorials that encompass everything you need. That's why I set up ViaRender; to provide education resources to students and those interested in ArchVis. Everything that I have learned I will share, and every piece of advice comes directly from my own experience.

Adding Context and Background to Renders
Hi everyone,
In this video we look at how to add a background, and context to your renders. Its one of the biggest mistakes that I see, for beginners and professional work, and we will explain how you can fix this in a number of different Archvis render scenarios. This video was inspired by a literal construct render that I saw while driving last week (it was terrible!).
A big thank you to all of you who have watched and subscribed!

Fantastic !! Very informative as I am trying my hands on D5 for a while now and looking forward for more useful tutorials at your end.
Thanks a million! I’m really glad you got something out of the video!

Thanks so much for watching and commenting! I genuinely appreciate the sentiment! Cheers.
Thanks , great video
Thank you so much!!
Keep these good video comming man, I'm starting with architecture visualisation in twinmotion. Your information seems pretty useful. Thank for the video & good luck
I really appreciate your comment! Im glad I could help! I have plenty of TM videos too, and there are tons of great TM teachers on RUclips.
Please, if I only have a 6G graphics card and I can't run path tracer, is it the card? Thank you
@@jirikasparek8295 Twinmotion 23 onwards requires a Nvidea RTX capable card to run the Path Tracer. You might be able to run the Path Tracer on the older versions of TM (2022 version). Honestly though, the requirements keep going up, and a new GPU is a great business investment. You should also look at D5 Render.
you are late, tehre is 2025 out now:D
I know! 😀 I haven’t tried it yet, but I’m excited to see what happens in the final release! Thanks for watching and commenting!
@viarender what do you think about future of lumion now? I think with configurator, volumetric clouds, teiplanar maos, lumen even D5 is behind, D5 library is impressive but quality wise Tm. Wins
@ Really good question! I will always be fond of Lumion, but the render results are not good enough with Ray Tracing. The price is also hard to justify…. Twinmotion is stellar, but there are a lot of bugs every new release. But being bought by Epic was the best thing to happen to TM. The pace of development and quality of the updates has been amazing. My thought is that Lumion should have been rebuilt from scratch based on the unreal engine, instead of a custom 3d engine.
Thank you for sharing! I'm always looking for more sites to source different assets from and especially more decorative items!
Thanks so much for watching! The Blender Market has great stuff too, I've used the stuff from 3D Shaker before too. blendermarket.com/creators/3d-shaker
There's 4.2 exporter
For Blender 4.2? Cool. I’m just using 3.6 because I haven’t had the chance to reinstall the extensions/ plug-ins. Maybe this weekend….!

Olá!
Hello and thanks for this tutorial. Is there a way to add custom assets to the D5 default library? 3d models, textures, scatter systems?
Great question! Imported assets, for example a chair, can be right clicked on while looking in the Object panel (lower left of the screen), and there is an option for 'Add to Local'. This will add the object to your local library for future use. The Local library is stored on your Drive, not the cloud like D5 default assets, and is accessible from the Asset Library. You can save textures/materials too. You cannot use these imported objects in Scatter mode though, so it's best for internal assets (not trees etc).
Thank You for the tips 👍👍👍
Thanks for watching, and taking the time to comment! I really appreciate it!
Thank you!!! Very nice information video!!! Make more similar comparison videos for these programs!!!
I’m delighted that you found it useful or informative!
Add AO from the EFFECTS tab to add more shadows and realism.
If memory serves, AO was not an option in this older version of D5. The pace of development on D5 is amazing. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Excellent tutorial! Thank you for sharing!
@@design9639 thank you so much! Really happy it helped in some way.
hi! i see you have the same "problem" i have: sun is bleeding through walls... any solutions for this?? it's driving me nuts! thanksss
@@meganneroyer5208 it’s a frustrating limit of the engine, but here are some things that worked for me: very thick walls in the building, reducing the Shadow Bias slider and Shadow distance slider (especially in Lumen). The Path Tracer ignores light bleed, so single renders with PT are good!
Excellent explanation as usual and seriously enjoy all your videos✨
Thanks so much, I’m really glad you got something out of the video.
Good Job🎉🎉
Thanks a bunch!
Thankk you
Thanks for watching, I hope you get some use out of the video tutorial!
Really interesting video. I'm trying to work with crowd tool in Blender so that I can then take them across to D5 for a stadium project. You make it look super simple when you bake, export and then import into D5. I seem to be having problem where it will export, but when I import the people into D5 there are no textures applied. Any thoughts on this would be champion! Thanks
have you trie djust saving the scene in the D5 format, without baking anything, then opening the scene in D5 Render?
@@viarender Heya, yer have tried it, but doesn't seem to be happening. It's procedural crowds plug in, really cool what u can do with it, but just seem to be getting the 3d and no textures
hey! Would you please explain why these mirrors arent reflecting within each other? for example the christmas decoration appear in all these mirrors as a black sphere. How do you make it to reflect normally? thanks
Hmmm.... I'd have to find the scene file for this one, and take a look, but my suspicion is a limitation of the original D5 Render Single Ray, Single Bounce architecture (D5's GI was improved in 2.5, I believe.)
Thank you very much! I am not new in Twinmotion but was very useful!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment. It’s feedback like this that keeps me recording and making tutorials.
Excellent information >> this was just what I was looking for with regards to settings and comparisons >> you answered all my questions with regards to the viable usage between path tracing / lumen >> and the fact that Twinmotion is free to use now in 2024 for individual (hobbyists like myself) and small enterprises is brilliant... love the beautiful example scenes in this video bravo simply gorgeous (!) 👌💯👀🎯😎🌠
Wow, thank you so much for this comment! I’m really happy that you found it useful! ☺️
Finally found the time to watch this video, which I kind of requested a while back. 😀 As always, this was very informative and with good advice. I want to try your suggestion of using an animated character and pausing the animation in the right pose. Preposed characters are often not in the pose I want. I also want to try using software for posing characters, but that may be too time consuming.
I’m delighted that you found the video useful. Thanks a million for watching!

This is the exact video I needed. Thanks! Do you happen to have a resource for SketchUp like Imeshh other than the 3D Warehouse?
Delighted to hear you found the video useful. As for resources, if you only use SketchUp, the Warehouse is still great, once you start saving other peoples great collections. Other sources include poliigon.com, cgtrader and this great video by @NunoSilva3d for other cool resources: ruclips.net/video/6RcKhK-lY8o/видео.html Plese note, since Sketchup cannot handle heavy models, many assets need to be exported from a 3D porgram (Blender, 3DS Max etc) into Twinmotion. Once in TM they can be added to the local library for future use.
@@viarender I'm not very good at Blender, but that's a good point. I could just grab files from Imeshh and import into Twinmotion. Thanks!
Thank you so much, I've managed to solve my problem by doing the opposite of what you recommend... I had imported a chair via blenderkit, and by leaving the D5 sync settings by default I couldn't get the materials. By clicking on Bake ("précalculer" en français!) I succeeded!
Did the bake work? I’ve crashed Blender a lot using it, so I now just use the export as D5 option, then import into D5. Takes about a minute per asset (ish!)
@@viarender when one solution doesn't work i try the other
Very helpful! Thanks
@@outsiderofficialmusic thanks!!
what settings did you make for the scene so it looks so expressive?
Apologies for the late reply! Honestly, I'm not sure I remember at this point. I think the light is a massive area light coming in the window that adds a lot of diffuse white light into the scene.
I've been using twinmotion for 4 years and I still learnt something new from this video. Thanks for sharing this. I never tinkered with the UV setting up there, I basically worked around it or just used another material. . lol
@@AdeposiOkupe Thanks so much for watching! I’m delighted that you got something from the video. Cheers!
thank you, very good video, complete and fairly exhaustive on these softwares. Your assessments are as accurate as ever. It's true that there have been quite a few changes in these softs over the last two years and I've made some new choices myself. As you say, the price of Lumion isn't very attractive and I've never tried it. I've already written about it, but I think I should mention the difficulty of preparing the sketchup files properly for using Twinmotion with Lumen. I recently went back to projects already rendered in video with Tm, this time using D5, which confirmed that the ease of synchronisation and stability are incomparable. It saves a lot of time. I get so many renders with TM (Lumen) where the objects are black, where it refuses to understand the textures. You then have to reconstruct the hierarachy of the Sketchup model and explode groups or rebuid somes. For those who miss the ‘keep hierarchy’ option in D5, there's an ‘export’ function in the D5 Live Sync widget in Sketchup which allows you to keep the structure and independence of the groups to a limited extent. It's not perfect, but it would be great if you could talk about it and make an in-depth video, until D5 finally perfects this function, which is present in TM.
as an Old Lumion user. I switched to D5 render. I was looking for something cheaper. affordable for my hobby/own business in addition to my normal job. Lumion didn't improve enough every year to be surprised by the updates. my last Lumion use of Lumion 11 and at the time + I was still working at an architectural firm with Lumion 12.5. For my own company, which where I really couldn't get enough orders, Lumion's new subscription form was far too expensive. I was looking for something cheaper and more modern TM or D5. enscape was already ruled out for me. TM has a lot of cool stuff. like all positions of people and playing with the age of the vegetation. And of course the integration of Epic directly into Uneal Engine 5. Unfortunately I noticed that the objects and results of TM often lagged when I looked on FB forum. it was basically the same as Lumion but slightly different. (which I already knew as a former Lumion user) In addition, I also knew that TM could often crash. Because of this I switched to D5 render. something that has certainly been a good step with all the updates. yes, it really still has a lot of things they need to update. (I'm also thinking about making a video about this Like: ocean, more swimming people, more EU cars, fur vegetation, placement of own objects etc.) But overall very satisfied. I have never achieved the final result of D5 in Lumion. Yes it has the same look and feel as all the others. However, my customers also ask this. There is no room to express my artistic self and place anything other than photorealism. People want a photo/image that sells well, hyper realism. The render time was also another thing for me that I did not want to use TM/Lumion. a video from Lumion sometimes takes 40 hours, while in D5 render it takes an average of 1.5 hours in terms of time. In conclusion I think that Lumion will ultimately no longer be able to keep up. TM has a good foundation through Epic. D5 will certainly remain for some years and I suspect it will bring the most development for the users. but maybe he end TM has a global monopoly for Archiviz Greetings Guillaume van der Maas - 3D ontwerp visualisatie -
Great video and reviews ..... keep providing us these videos !!!! I was using Enscape for about 2 years until Twinmotion became free. Now I am using / learning Twinmotion and it has a huge learning curve, compared to Enscape, although it does make the renderings / videos much more realistic. I am still learning / finding assets and materials that are easy to import and use that make the models realistic.
Lumion is an old software that's been dragging its heels all these years, struggling to keep up with the accelerating pace of change....this is typical of all fields. D5, on the other hand, is a recent program that's well in tune with the times and looking to the future. It takes full advantage of all available nvidia technologies, develops AI tools, innovates with features such as the latest scatter tool....and, above all, it's a dynamic team that develops very, very quickly. Twinmotion is between the 2, in my opinion it's always been a little less good than Lumion but I'm still keeping an eye on it for one reason only....it was bought by EPIC, so if they want to push this software they have unlimited means to do so. I've been using D5 for a year and a half now and for me it's the best of the 3 today. And we're waiting for pathtracing on D5 to make up for its slight lack of rendering quality.
@@nnay00 Thanks for your comments, and taking the time to write them up. D5 really is newer, more agile and more lightweight. It still has its issues, but it’s so very impressive. The thing with Lumion is that it was never intended for the average user; but for architecture companies and those without a 3D background. Ease of use seems to be the focus, and delivering atmospheric renders. The 100,000 users they have seems to imply that the model did work. I guess it’s a question of can they stay current and relevant. Thanks so much for watching!
i switched from c4d to blender and now i have no more questions
@@captainagk Blender is great, but there is a learning curve that is steep for newcomers. But it’s amazing that it’s still free!
After using Enscape and Lumion for years , I switched over to D5 Render about a year and half ago . I feel like if you know how to set up your own HDRI properly , you can get some seriously beautiful results and make it stand out from other people using the same program . The workflow is so much better in my opinion . Also support staff is way more responsive and immediate than when I used the other programs. I just think most people tend to use the bare bones of the programs and that’s why so many people’s renders tend to look the same . The quality of my renders have dramatically improved by switching to D5. While I do believe there are some features that they can improve on , I’m always so excited when they release their new updates because I know things can only get better quality wise .
