I highly recommend the Netflix series loosely-based adaptation of Green Eggs and Ham. It is by far the best adaptation of anything Dr. Suess related material in a long long time. It’s probably the best one other than the Chuck Jones TV specials of The Grinch and/or The Lorax. The series has a lot of charm, the characters are likable, the humor is actually good, the 2D animation is great, the voice acting actually works for the characters (i.e. Adam Devine fits perfectly for a character like Sam-I-Am), and there are no cringey pop-culture, dated references.

"A guy named Norm" is probably the best description for the Cumberbatch Grinch I've ever heard.

When I first heard about Benedict Cumberbatch being casted as The Grinch, I thought that he would be a good choice for a role like that because he certainly can pull off voice acting such as Smaug in The Hobbit films and his voice was intimidating for the character. He does have the capability to pull off a growly, grumpy voice for a character like The Grinch, yet for some reason, he wasn't given that type of direction when voicing this character and just made him do this absurd American accent where he sounds like Dr. Venture from The Venture Bros.

When I was younger, I used to think "happy holidays" referred to the school holidays, i.e. school breaks. It certainly didn't help that Hannukah and Kwanzaa aren't very big here in Australia (since there aren't many Jews or black people), or that Christmas occurs in summer in the Southern Hemisphere, and by extension the summer holiday period.
Don't worry, Pieguy - if anything, I'm *glad* you took long to come out with that episode, since I'm *really* behind with them at the moment. Normally, I only listen to the Re-Cast when I'm on my 20-km walk, which I've been unable to do often lately because it's 40 degrees Celsius outside at the moment.
10:28 Hey, that's nothing - you should hear how Doug Walker was introduced to _Star Wars_ .
19:04 Honestly, that name is *wayyy* funnier than "Principal Vagina" - I am so getting a "Babu Frick" T-shirt whenever I can. :D
21:57 If you don't mind me asking, are you still with Erin?
34:42 I think _Letterland_ and _Milo & Otis_ went for a similar sort of thing, where the narrator also voices all the characters - they're trying to make it sound like a children's book being read out loud. Especially with _Letterland_ , since the animation is really bare-bones, and the characters don't even (usually) move their mouths when they talk.
41:38 Your SJW streak is showing again, Pieguy. Just be grateful at least Cindy is more outgoing.
Also, just because a female character is well written, does not make her "progressive" - that title only further serves to alienate women from being seen as normal, average people, so we should just avoid using it altogether, at least for women.
52:17 "Old Testament Santa" had me LOLing. :D

The way they've been advertising the new Grinch pretty much shows the biggest issue. Its been promoted with a "wow this is totally me" type of vibe, but thats totally not what the Grinch is. He's not just some grump who has "totally relatable" moments, he's supposed to be mean and nasty and downright evil, until he finally turns around. New grinch just seems like the guy in everyone's friend group who's a bit more cynical

If you ignore the special and the first movie and just look at the book, the Grinch isn’t actually this over-the-top comedically awful person. He does bad things, of course, but that association didn’t actually come along until the Chuck Jones special. In the original book, the Grinch was actually a stand-in for Seuss himself (he was 53 years old at the time), reflecting his own disillusionment with Christmas and eventual rediscovering of what he loved about it. The Grinch becoming this hilariously sadistic goblin thing had far more to do with Chuck Jones’ style of comedy, and the 2000 film obviously took a lot of influence from that special. The Illumination version on the other hand provides a different interpretation that stays true to the _book_ and adds a bit more depth to it. I think they’re all fun interpretations, and don’t consider it an issue at all that they’re different.

  • @mechajay3358

The original special and book is better hands down. The Illumination is Beyond Bland, Water down version of the Grinch. Say what you will about the Jim Carrey version (which I personally love, it's a live action adaptation done right) but at least it stays true to the spirit of the special while also putting it's own spin on thw story.

    • @unpopularopinions7407
      @unpopularopinions7407 4 года назад +1

I’d argue that the Jim Carrey version doesn’t stay true to the spirit of the special/book.
An important detail to remember about the original is that the Grinch was never on this crusade against commercialism; he was just annoyed by Christmas festivities in general and incorrectly _assumed_ that this was all Christmas was. Then when his theft what he _assumes_ is Christmas doesn’t actually prevent it, he realizes that he was wrong and that Christmas meant more than he understood.
The Jim Carrey one, meanwhile, in an attempt to make the Grinch sympathetic, makes him _right,_ at least partially. In this version, Christmas in Whoville is _exactly_ what he assumes it is- hollow commercialism with no regard for what really matters. Cindy Lou is inexplicably the only person in the entire town to have any questions about this. Whoville is made into a far less pleasant setting; one that doesn’t change until the very end when the script delivers the rather basic and childish message of “Christmas isn’t about presents, it’s about FAMILY!”, following several minutes of shouting and blaming for the Grinch’s robbery.
I don’t see how the Illumination one is untrue to the spirit of the original whatsoever. Sure, Grinch isn’t exactly the same character he was in the special, but that characterization of him had more to do with Chuck Jones than Seuss himself. Illumination’s Grinch is still true to the book, simply with the addition of a deeply-personal grudge against the holiday. He misunderstands what Christmas really is, and thinks he’ll be getting apt revenge on Whoville for his self-imposed isolation by “stealing Christmas”; which he assumes is just the superficial aspects like the presents and the decorations. In this version, Whoville is once again a cheerful town that does understand Christmas. While they’re of course shocked at first, they quickly rebound and join together in song. This allows the Grinch to see Christmas (and in the process, Whoville) for what it truly is and realize the error of his ways. I was so pleasantly surprised by the Illumination version *because* of its faithfulness to the spirt of the book, whereas that was my biggest issue with the Jim Carrey version.

I just realized that after watching the Netflix loosely-based adaptation of Green Eggs and Ham (which is by far the best adaptation of anything Dr. Suess related material in a long time), I think that his books fit much better for a TV format rather than a movie format. You realize that the two Chuck Jones TV specials of The Grinch and The Lorax as well as the Green Eggs and Ham series on Netflix capture the world and heart of the Dr. Seuss books very well. They should have tried the GEAH method for the other books they tried adapting in the past as well as the other books he wrote that haven’t been adapted.
