But for 2 years after high school he served a church mission and during that time he was not running competitively. And from what I believe he never had a 2017 XC season. Which makes it so that he can have a 2021 XC season. But since he did indoor and outdoor track in 2018, he won’t be running track for the 2022 season.

I don't judge Connor on his age...he is a beast. Won fair and square. These young fellas will one day (maybe soon) replace Connor as the creme de la creme. Kiptoo, Nur, Nico Young. Who will it be next year?

It's more cost effective than trying to work your way around 100 people trying to catch up to the front.

@@cooperbaines4499 For a very crowded field your point is taken. But in many races passing people is not a problem and 10,000m track athletes don't do it to any great extent. I do recall though in my CC races, if someone got 100m ahead of me at the start it was really hard to reel them in. We would commonly maintain the same distance for the whole race.
The only example I can recall of a CC runner pacing himself was Paul Tergat in a World CC championships in the 1990's. He went from about 100th to win by a huge margin. But Tergat was very special.
I think this problem is more complex than it initially seems. I'd be really interested to see if it has been studied rigorously to any extent.

@@hanklenham7627 Which is sort of where my uniformed thinking was going. Yet CC runners still usually sprint at about 400m-800m pace at the start. There may be more variables involved here than initially meets the eye though.

Yeah I dunno about how many 800 guys run 10k XC. In the Women's 6k? Sure, definitely a good number of those to fill up the 6th and 7th spots on teams.

I think you would find most of the top guys in the race have solid 800 times. NA, NA, 1:49, NA, 1:48, NA, NA, NA, NA, NA,... I guess many of them haven't run it while in college, but given they are sub 4 milers, you could certainly expect a low 1:50 or high 1:40 out of them

He's also beaten Mantz many time on the track and is the best 1500-meter runner in the US since he won the Olympic Trail (over the Rio gold medalist) and he's also the defending NCAA champ...he's even better at cross country!
