    Terrific exercise Master. I’m now at the stage where I’m starting to feel the Jazz groove and sound half reasonable and these exercises through the cycle definitely help with my improv lines as I’m developing.

    Really dig all your basics videos! Never too good to practice the little things. I feel practicing that stuff improves the speed at which I can find things on the keyboard. Makes me more comfortable using my brain instead of muscle memory :)

    Hi Tony, as you say that comments Inspire you...here I am! I love the first 2-5-1 in particular. As I am a beginner pianist, being able to see the right hand descending chromatically is of great help. I also noticed you double the fifth, what rule of thumb do you suggest for choosing what notes to double and what not? Thanks

    • @ciousli
      @ciousli 4 года назад +1

      Hey man! Like the music on your channel :) there really isn't any general rule that helps here I guess, it all depends on context. But some common ones are doubling the melody note (drop2 or added octave on top), doubling the bass note (pop galore, grounds the voicing sometimes too much), doubling the fifth (if it's in there to begin with). I usually avoid doubling thirds or sevenths. Then again, when straight up using upper structure triads, doubling any note works well because of that extra dense sounds it generates. Follow your ears and write down voicings that sound nice to you.

      There is no rule but generally try not to double notes. But if it sounds better with a note doubled, do it. If there is a wide spacing in your chord and you nee to fill it in without adding some 'weird' note, doubling may be the only choice.

    I think it would be better to write an A flat in the G13(b9), to make it easier for people who are relatively new to chord symbols. Furthermore, great stuff ;-)
