Great ideas! Just been given a box full of tartan fabric….im beyond excited!!! I’m not Scottish, but moved to Scotland 18years ago…..I’ve always loved tartan! ❤
As a woman, some of my first thoughts were to make or line a purse. That's certainly enough (and I'm married to a leatherworker, so bonus). Tartan with a contrast piping would be really cool for an outerwear corset bodice. It would certainly be warm. You could easily get 2 scarves out of it 30x60 length of fabric. You could also get a pair of Christmas stockings out of that much fabric. (If you do want to do this, you can make the lining out of an old pillow case... that's what we do with knitted stockings usually... but if you're more adept at sewing fiddly fabrics, a poly lining would make it easier to clean the inside. And I definitely wouldn't anchor the toe so you can turn that lining out and clean it if say it gets a bit warm by the fire and some choccy melts) If you've got littles, you could make their favorite stuffed toys/dolls kilts. Add a velcro closure instead of buckles. And now I want a kilted skirt for an American Girl Doll.... why do I do this to myself?
family photo album cover would be beautiful. ad a bit of padding and have someone embroider the family crest in gold. you'd be looking at a family heirloom forsure!
teach the kids how to sew jackets for their teddy bears bowties for weddings (made a few of these before) definitely some hair goodies for the girls golfer's cap, balmoral or glengarry
for larger pieces of fabric, you could do soft christmas decorations "baubles", or if you are very crafty a stuffed scotty dog toy for a child. definitely couch cushion covers. upcycle ladie's high heels by covering the shoe 's toe and heel in fabric. travel bathroom bags (i have one i made that i use at gym) wallets and small handbags
Things I've seen/done with tartan scraps: Tied onto luggage handles to make it easy to spot on airport carousels. Doggy Coat Framed picture mat Bodice. Scarf Book Covers Knee/elbow patches on clothing Bean bag paperweights at clan tents. Would work great for cornhole too. Hat bands. Hats Quilts
+USAKiltsOfficial *Thanks for the examples of projects that use Tartan.* Specialized projects might include Mexican-style neckbows, log covers, and corner flashes for sales booths.
The 30x60 would be enough to make a child size kilt. With smaller pieces I would use as an accent on handbags or as a piece has been used by my girls for several years…as a child’s wrap. I have a heavy tartan wrap that I bought in Scotland and one of my daughters wanted to match me so I found a wool plaid that’s approximately 20x40 in my fabrics and let her use it.

I would make a personalized journal, and use the left overs to cover the book cover. Make the journal about your clan, travel memories etc
WAHOO! My question made it to Live! Love the wreath idea, IT WILL NOT BECOME A THONG!! ROFL!! After I asked, I saw a small Teddy Bear.
I did a vest, necktie and pocket square. Bain’s of Caithness!

I'm amazed none of you mentioned the elephant in the room: bookbinding!
I lined my bagpipe case with a scrap.

Stitching a piece of it onto a knife sheath or sgian dubh sheath could be pretty cool.
A throw over the back of a chair, a small bag, book cover, a sash, an outfit for a small pet, Xmas stocking...
Awesome ideas. If I just have a small piece or 2 then table place mats might be an idea.
teach the kids how to sew jackets for their teddy bears
bowties for weddings (made a few of these before)
definitely some hair goodies for the girls
golfer's cap, balmoral or glengarry
I made a tartan banner to hang on my wall and to put on my pole to walk with it in parades.

I used the scraps to make a secret under apron pocket for my kilt.
30 in x60 in = 2.5 ft x 5 ft, easy-peasy, add a fringe and have a "keep you warm" throw for sitting on the sofa by the fire.

What about making kilt flashes 😊 you can sew your tartan to the red flashes to save a little time if your tartan is red like mine
Definitely an option!
I make wallets out of small scraps and purses out of bigger scraps. Now I am going to accent denim with it.
I've made a purse with my tartan scraps.
I was sitting here waiting for any of you to say hose flashes with a loop to fit over the elastic gaiter.
What about flashes? How much material is needed?
I would make a kilt for an 8in Sasquatch (SakaSquatch) statue I have (it’s a Sasquatch smoking a cigar Steve Saka Dunbarton Tobacco and Trust)
I'm here after the fact. LOL If you sew historical wear, something we women are severely lacking. Pockets!!!
You could make some flashes.
Musket sock... and market wallet
Hat ribbon
I'd make a shawl
a needle book or rolled sewing kit.
Inset for a guitar strap.
Make a book cover
make a mask, of a scrunchie for hair
Matching face mask.
Book covers.
I made a scarf
A purse
Please cut. Never rip.
