People Dumping At Railroad, Huge Trains Knock Down Classic B&O Signals Still In Use! Dump Is Mine!!

- Truck caught dumping at railroad, Huge Trains Knock Down ancient B&O trackside signals and the huge Coal Train that my grand dad tole me about! Son, I struck gold by getting the dirt! These classic Baltimore And Ohio Railroad colour position signals are still in use on this busy CSX main line railroad also used by Norfolk Southern, Indiana & Ohio Railway and Amtrak. This railroad is in Cincinnati near Spring Grove Cemetery along the Mill Creek on Canal Ridge Road. Cincinnati Queensgate Yard is just to the south. Right after I got here I saw a truck drive by with dirt and scrap wood. I got curious and peeked around the curve to see what they were doing. I noticed them dumping something off the truck so I filmed the truck when they left and then went over to see what they dumped by the tracks. It turned out to be some nice looking clean dirt. I did a soil analysis on it and determined it to be topsoil with a nice dark brown colour, silty clay loam texture and sub angular blocky structure. The dark brown topsoil turned light brown with some grays and pebbles the deeper that it went below the grass line. It was further determined that I could put this soil to use! I got a third or so of the soil on my truck along with some wood and then filmed a humongous mixed freight followed by one of the coal trains that Gramps tole me about as a child. It was heavy one! Gramps tole me about the coal trains and coal mining in eastern Kentucky but he died young of Black Lung before I could appreciate his coal mining stories. I use to love going to visit my relatives in the coal mining areas of eastern Kentucky. The tracks were right across the road from their home and there was a tunnel there. They knew where I was at. I watched the coal trains and got to get in the cabooses. Today all those tracks are gone and the Tuttle home is gone also.
Anyway, check out these long trains and enjoy the coal train because there just ain't many of them left in this area. You have to look real close at the signals to see them go from a clear signal to a red block when the locomotives pass them. I counted 219 cars and compartments on the first train. There was an unusual amount of cars with flat spots. I could not count them but I think there was 8 to 10 cars with flat spots. To the best of my knowledge that is the longest regular train I have ever seen in the US. There were some test trains ran with more cars, but I’m not sure what came out of those tests.
The longest train I ever ran was 207 cars and a little over two miles long. It was two train put together when we were detouring over the KCS in the 70s. On a foggy night one of our trains ran into the counterbalance of a draw bridge that was raised up, but the signal was still displaying a clear (green) signal. It took several months to rebuild that bridge. It was a mess and nearly every train we ran tied up on the hours of service law. So we were very short on crews and they were combining trains together.

Those flat spots can't be good on the wheel bearings .
Left the B&O RR in 1973 after 13yrs. Was a tower operator on the old C&N Division in Columbus,Ohio. Been watching your videos and never lessened to so many flat spots wheels

I began watching trains outside of Philadelphia back in the 60's. That was when we could almost go anywhere along the tracks, cross bridges, and even get tours of the Switch Tower in Bridgeport, Pa. across the river from Norristown (where I lived before joining the navy in 1964. Glad to see you put so much love into your video's. You can tell how much of a Big deal it is for you. Thanks for making me a new RAILFAN from the Past. PEACE.

Hey JAWTOOTH if you need dirt and fill just put out an advertisement, to all the landscapers in your area. They always have issues getting rid of the dirt. And if you are going to take the dirt off their hands i bet they will be more then happy to bring it too you.
That was a great idea about the dirt. In so many states if your digging u have to watch for those big red stinging fire ants. You wouldn't be able to pick up the clumps of grass and dirt without finding fire ants crawling around in it. They are hard to kill. Stay safe. 🐓🌟🐾🎸

All these St Bernard and Elmwood Place videos you're putting up is making me homesick lol. I grew up in Carthage on Anthony Wayne across from the Fairgrounds. When I was a kid I used to run between the factories to the tracks by the distillery and watch the trains. I used to walk those tracks all the time with my Grandpa.
well, no one will ever accuse NS of 'over-powering' a train. LOL Hard to start rolling and hard to stop. but they probably saved a buck with one crew and 'two trains'. I would say that is hard on the locomotives, they are probably lease. Good video Jawtooth, and good luck with the dirt.
Just asking u a question dude if ya don't mind , when ya said its hard to stop if that first freight train was going say 75 mph and there was a 200 tonne road crane on the level crossings what would happen to the crane and how long would it take for the train to come to a full stop after the aftermath, also what's the combined full weight in tonnes if the 2 first engines the CSX ones, I know ur going to look at this long question and think wots the guy on or why's he asking me a question like this, lol, godbless
Hi Jawtooth! I sent a few pics by email of the route the coal hoppers follow through town and some of the crossings here in Windber, PA. Unfortunately they don't have a set schedule. The safety guy follows the train until it gets to Altoona and was very nice. He said if you ever wanted, you could follow him to get you shots. They pull, either Tuesday or Thursday and they are about ready now. 115 hoppers of coal and three NS engines pulling and 3 engines pushing. The guys at the tipple usually know when they will make a run. It goes right through town and through the midway, crossing all the side streets. I can't make it down, I just heard the horns blowing.
Wow, Windber would be a great place to film a coal train. I would love to film one there going through downtown. that would be awesome!

JT recycling perfectly good earth. The planet thanks you. The NS was a monster. What with the new rules in place and monster trains, now road crews can pick up and drop off cars inside the yard limit board, which once because of unions was the preserve of switchmen. As for how long it takes to make up these monster trains, Danny Harmon posted last week and he followed one train that took an hour to make up. When it was all said and done, the conductor was still in the yard two miles away. The engineer took the train about two miles down the road and a company vehicle took the conductor to the head end. If/when something goes wrong with the train, the conductor has a long, long walk in some cases, and he carries heavy gear with him. I've carried knuckles, air hose and wrenches, or fire retardant and accompanying tools for those hot boxes back in the day. One hundred cars was a long train, so often it was a long walk usually in the dark and the road bed dropped off about thirty feet into the abyss. lol
The dirt could be contaminated.

JT, please be wary of anything somebody dumps from a pickup truck when no one is around!
There is usually a reason for picking those kind of spots. Who is to say that dirt is not contaminated in some way? Perhaps a chemical spill of toxic material? Always wise to be cautious.
Great location for viewing trains. Long line of sight in both directions. With those long trains you need it!
Brian, that's false advertising, lol. Those signals were still standing after the train passed through. I'd have went to the hardware store and bought a spade and came back up there, lol.

This was probably one of the longest trains I have ever seen. They don't have any DPU's in the middle somewhere especially with that incline. Amazing truly amazing. But wait there's more ...dirt.

To Ol' Dad, in all probability, that coal is going to AK Steel in Middletown, about 40 miles North. Steepest part of the grade is from Glendale to Fairfield, that's why no DPUs.
To Bill Morris, that CPL signal is Medium Clear for the NS train, that is green over white indication. Medium speed through junctions with power switches. That NS train is going to Sharonville ( old NYC, Big 4 ) and probably on
to Dayton and Columbus.

I took my wife to an appointment yesterday in Chillicothe at least 3 fast moving freight trains rolled by in the hour we were there.
Be careful, "dumped" soils is sometimes contaminated.
I can't believe they didn't have another locomotive in the middle of the intermodal train.
The intermodal train was so long you forgot it actually started out as a manifest! But, yeah, I was surprised to see that much stuff behind just two locomotives, too.

It is called a tip in New Zealand, too. My brother would go to the tip on Saturdays and pick up bricks and cinder blocks that others had discarded to use for various household projects. They try to recycle everything down there. Thanks for all of your excellent videos.
Hey JT, just love your videos. Been watching ever since the one where they relaid tracks in La Grange. I have to comment on your desire for more dirt. I have a perennial problem trying to get rid of the stuff after we plant vegetable beds. My son weeds the beds and loads up bags ready to take to the recycling centre, but then I have to go through it all, knocking out all the soil around the roots! I'd be happy to send you all I have but it's probably impractical from Norwich,England!

Classic B&O signals and here comes a Norfolk Southern train? Is this CSX/NS shared trackage or what? Great video!
It is directional running. Norfolk Southern is only supposed to use it running North to Hamilton where they split on their own tracks. Then CSX gets to use their southbound track through Sharonville to handle southbound traffic. So its a "you scratch my back I scratch yours" type of thing..

Across the Mojave Desert from Needles, California, the UP run about 3 mile long freight. Mostly double stack containers. 3 engines in front, 1 or 2 middle, and 1 or 2 at the end. Similar here in SE Idaho, again UP.

I’ve seen some pretty long trains here in Nashville lately a lot of them with 1 engine in front and 2 engines in the center of the train . I’m used to seeing 1 engine in the center , but lately a lot of them have had 2. Thanks for the video !! Take care brother

Out where I live on the East Side of Cincy, we have old B&O signals that still worked, but now they have covers on them and I fkn hate them. It's a shame they had to cover them up and discontinue them since only 1 train moves bk and forth during the day.
