  • Never before seen film from our full length movie of the Erie, Reading, Lehigh Valley, D&H, Penn Central and more!
D-143 THE HARD COAL ROADS: what went wrong Railroad Press
“Much of the film has hard to find footage, and is high quality. This collection surpasses anything that I have seen and the story is epic. The colors are accurate, and the images and the trains seem to jump off the screen. A meticulous producer, location awareness is always a priority. Extremely interesting and has the rarity factor. In short, this exemplary show is a must have!”

I bought your DVD on the old Western Pacific Railroad, and my favorite part is without question the part with Flying Scotsman in it. Your DVDs are as beautiful as the I Love Toy Trains one. Speaking of the video, I even heard the old Lehigh Valley Railroad dumped 2 Consolidations in the middle of a deep dark forest and are still there where they left them.

Nice video. I grew up along The Valley Line, next to a yard, aka my playground, still live near it today although now NS. The black and white C628s, in the 60 years I lived along this line I have never heard them refered to as White Elephants, they where called The Snowbirds. The colors represented the majority of products originating on their line, black for Anthracite, white for cement (same as L&NE). The C420s seem in the video with grey with yellow lettering and pin striping were called Yellow Jackets. The other we just refered to as maroon or red.
C420s 405 and 414 still work Scranton area and Mt. Pocono to this day as the Delaware & Lackawanna. 414 is still in LV paint and lettering.
4 of the S8 "pups" with dynamic braking also still work the same coal fields doing the same work but now as the Reading and Northern.

Very nice compilation. My father was raised in a railroad and harbor town. My great grandfather was involved in schooner engineering/ building after his arrival from italy. I loved watching the first gen locomotives. My grandparents knew so many (grandma was a nurse and grandpa was a judge) Friends of the family who worked on the railroad and knew that i liked trains and ships would take us on hoard locos, cabooses, up in the control towers, and the tugs and ships in the harbor.
Then wed come back to the wonderful smells at my grandparents where grandma, mom, and my aunts would be cooking up feasts --
    Sure miss those days.

Such mis management of these railroads. Who makes these decisions?

There were many factors, but the writing was on the wall for these overbuilt coal railroads. Once the coal was gone they had no online customers or traffic left!

great video Charles...those 1950's locomotives sound so cool. why would it be so hard for the rich to humble themselves, and do what Tesla discovered and bring FREE electricity down from the ionosphere and into transformers and send it out nationwide for a real huge "Bullet train system and all support systems....FREEFREE Also ship ALL that FREE Coal that Admiral Byrd found in Antarctica which can supply the World. The skies are being sprayed with contaminants anyway daily. THANKS Charles good footage from da 70's etc

Please don’t say Appalachia that way. No one who lives there says it like that.
