  • After producing a series of One Hour Wargames videos in various periods I wanted to add an earlier age. Whether referred to as the Dark Ages or the Early Middle Ages, the appearance of Vikings to the tabletop produces very swift actions. In this action a Viking longboat has brought a fighting group to the east coast of England post the conquest (let's say 1070) for a quick raid. However, a determined Anglo-Norman force is waiting for them to drive them back into the water!

Great video, thanks. I enjoy your scenically impressive battlefields. I was thinking that maybe the dark-ages in OHW might be a bit boring with no real ranged shooting, but this has persuaded me otherwise and I'm going to give it a go.
Maybe use the Knights as flank/rear support once the Anglo-Norman infantry have engaged the Vikings rather than charging into powerful infantry?
More dark age/medieval OHW videos, please!

Thanks and yes I think a review of the cavalry is needed! Wanted to try and hit the Vikings early but back to the drawing board!

Nice game. I was impressed to see that one of the Anglo-Saxon archers is a dead ringer for comedian Bill Bailey (around 14:50 in your video).
If you had a Rus force you’d still be able to use some of your Viking figures and that would be a great excuse to possibly get some Byzantines onto the battlefield ⚔⚔

We pay our taxes to those Normans who in return say they will protect us from the Vikings hoards then this happens. Bring back the old lot with Harold that's what I say, he knew how to tackle the Viking threat (well, apart for the Normans who are actually Norsemen in cunning disguise)!
Are there any waterfalls in Eastern England, I was just wondering?
Seriously, I really enjoyed this skirmish. OHW rules seem to work very nicely in this period (and the odd tweak is, of course, quite acceptable...). I have never considered this period before, so thanks for that Greg. As ever, these battle reports get my imagination going! I am thinking of a sort of 'campaign' based around a stretch of coastline and a river estuary being defended by a professionally garrisoned castle who along with the local village militias have to deal with sundry threats presented by raiders through a summer's pillaging season.

Haha! This might be the best piece of feedback ever! Listening to David Mitchell’s new book on Kings of England and his support to Harold is echoed by you here! After all when we first read about Hastings who was up for William?? Thanks for this great piece Andy.

Depends how far North you go, but yes. That waterfall or Force wouldn't be out of place.
