I’m an American married to a Brazilian living in a small town (30 mil) in Minhas Gerais. We’ve had the same experience, including with two surgeries in the last year. I paid for private care, but all of the MDs in town work for both the public system and independently using the same hospital. So my wife uses the public system when appropriate. All doctors gave personalized treatment, to include post-surgical visits to our home. Incredible!
Hi John, thank you very much for watching our video and also for confirming our observations. Surprisingly enough some of our friends and viewers who have never not travelled internationally as much as us and have never had such an experience outside of Canada, were actually defending the Canadian system and saying that maybe Mariana and I have had a bad luck in Canada and have been very lucky in Brazil 🤷🏻 we truly did not feel that we got lucky in Brazil since the treatment we received where in several different clinics and even states!! Really appreciate you sharing your experience with us. All the best
The SUS has a humanized birth center, called Casa Angela. My neighbor's daughter, a journalist, has private health insurance, but chose to give birth at Casa Angela, and really liked it. Dental treatment is available at SUS health centers and, for more specific situations, the health post directs you to the Dental Specialty Centers.
Yes in our experience also SUS is very reliable and efficient. In Canada the thought of getting sick and having to go through the paralyzed health care system or waiting at the emergencies at the hospital is more terrifying than the sickness itself. For complicated health problems or sophisticated surgeries, you will be stuck in a system that might take you years before you can do the surgery; sadly a lot of people don’t make it and just die due to the inefficiencies of the system. This is on top of hefty taxes that we pay every year!!
Thank you so much for watching our video and really appreciate your comment. Some of our friends/viewers were saying that maybe our experience in Canada is not the reality!! (we certainly didn’t believe so), but now your comment also reaffirms our experience. All the best 👍
Interestingly, the internet is full of Americans talking about the Canadian healthcare system and few reacting to the Brazilian healthcare system. Rich countries have a lot to learn from poor countries when it comes to public and private healthcare. Starting with the fact that the private system is only efficient because the public system pushes prices down.
Hi there, yes you are absolutely right. We had the horrible experience of dealing with the public system in Canada; we have family in the US so we know how horrible the system is over there too and now we have the experience with healthcare (public & private) in a lot of the other countries that the propaganda of Western governments always only talks about the negatives. We had another horrible experience about the vet clinics also in Canada that if we had stayed there, our dog would be blind in 1-2 months. We went to Mexico and the vet ophthalmologist saved his vision, treated him and 3 years later he is completely fine! It truly saddens us that the system in Canada and the US is so inefficient when we also have some of the highest taxes in the world! When the system in Brazil (SUS) works much better considering the much lower taxes and a huge population of Brazil compared to Canada, this only suggests that in Canada there is a huge mismanagement of funds and corruption that paralyze the system. Thanks for watching our video and we hope you enjoyed the content. All the best

Since we made this video, a lot of people have been reaching out to us and saying that we are wrong or the situation in Canada is not "as bad"!! We lived through it too and we can definitely relate to exactly what you said. We also know people who had to fly to Brazil or other countries to seek treatment and actually one Brazilian couple, the husband was told in Canada that he was fine, but when they came to Brazil it turned out that he had Cancer. They stayed in Brazil and he got the full treatment and recovered fully. Had he stayed in Canada, nobody could imagine what could have happened to him. So, once again thank you so much for sharing your experiences with us and we hope you watch our other videos as well as follow us on RUclips and Instagram so we can keep in touch. All the best.
I'm Brazilian and I don't pay for health insurance, I receive care from the SUS - tests, like blood test and others, I see the results on the internet in a few days, as does the doctor at the health center who attended to me, and then there's the medical consultation return. Now, I'm waiting for a call from the SUS for acupuncture treatment for my spine and physiotherapy. About three years ago I had specialized ophthalmology exams, with cutting-edge technology, which I would have difficulty getting through a private health plan.
The SUS serves a very large population; patience is required in the case of highly sought-after specialties, such as orthopedics, for example. The SUS has flaws, it can be improved, of course, but it works. Even rich people may have to have surgeries through the SUS, which they cannot always get in private hospitals.
That's a very informative video. I think every country should have an universal public health system to support their citizens, and even visitors, tourists, like SUS in Brazil . That's a show of respect and, I'd dare say even of humanity, to provide health assistance to those who need it. Of course, there are a lot that must be done to improve the system (very faulty in some areas), however, imagine how difficult it must to plan for system to serve in a country with more than 200 million people.
We couldn’t agree more 😊you are absolutely right. Thank you so much for your remarkable, insightful comments and thanks for watching our video 🙏😊 We hope you enjoyed the video. All the best 👍
@@global_citizens Yes, absolutely! That's interesting to see it from a different perspective. All the best to the couple, as well! Keep it up! Thank YOU!
Just one more observation: Brazil has a development bank (federal public company), the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES). The BNDES financed renovations of excellent private hospitals in São Paulo, such as Einstein and Oswaldo Cruz, with counterparts: in exchange for obtaining financing, these hospitals provide training courses for SUS employees, transfer technology to the SUS, manage some public SUS facilities, etc. For example, the municipal public hospital Vila Santa Catarina is managed by Einstein. In the Mooca neighborhood, Oswaldo Cruz has a unit to care for SUS patients.
He talked about private clinics in Brazil and people are commenting below as if he had gone to SUS. That1s normal: you pay, you get it whenever you want it. SUS is good, but certainly not that efficient. Still it depends on the city you're in. The best private medicine in Brazil is in the city of São Paulo, but prices are much higher if you compare to a medium-sized city such as São José dos Campos.
Thank you for watching our video and for your kind comments. Yes indeed we mostly spoke about private clinics in Brazil, but also our point was that in Canada you don’t even have that option to just pay and see a specialist in a few days; in Canada if you are lucky, it will take 6-9 months to see a specialist because everyone has to go through the public system! Regarding SUS, you are absolutely right. We have heard from a lot of people that in bigger cities it may not be as efficient, but believe me it is still more efficient than in Canada. We tried SUS recently even though it was in a smaller city and from the time we walked in until we left it took 45 minutes!! In Canada nowadays the average wait time at the hospital is between 12-18 hours!!! That’s why we mentioned in the video that we believe the Canadian system is highly inefficient especially considering the extremely high taxes that people pay in Canada. All the best
I am Brazilian, I am undergoing a complete check-up, all kinds of blood tests, I have a problem with my shoulder and I just scheduled a CT scan to see if I will need surgery, all completely free through the SUS, this is the preventive medicine we have. I live in the interior of São Paulo - Boituva. I am 43 years old and I have never paid for anything and I have been to hospitals and preventive clinics countless times, in several different states of the country, (I have traveled a lot around Brazil) and I have always been treated very well and with great efficiency.
Hi there, thank you so much for your kind comment. Yes this is exactly what we have also experienced after living for years in Montreal Canada and then moving to Brazil. Honestly considering the population of Brazil, the extent of healthcare provided by SUS, and much less taxes that Brazilians pay, SUS is much more efficient. Above all, I personally really appreciate the human approach when I walk into any health centre in Brazil (private or public). The professionals working there really care and do acknowledge that you are a patient and you need assistance. Unfortunately, in Canada you are only a number in the system and everyone just wants to charge you!! Thanks again for watching our video.
I'm Brazilian living in Europe looking for a cold experience in Canada. Brazil has an "unique" healthcare system (SUS) that is similar to the UK system, but in Brazil you can find an infinite range of private medical services that are not that expensive (especially for foreigners) and of excellent quality, such as dentists, gynecologists, dermatologists, etc. If you are a resident foreigner (or even a visitor) you have access to the SUS. As a Brazilian, I would avoid SUS, as you can easily pay for a private health plan of great quality and not that expensive. If you need advice on getting to know my city Manaus (or the Amazon), don't worry about asking. I will gladly help you. Cheers!

I lived in Canada for 4 years, 16 years ago, and whenever I've needed care, I've been lucky to be well looked after. The exams take a while, but the service has always been reasonable to good, considering it's a public system. I had surgery and was very well looked after. The clinics take a while, but you have to take into account that it's a public system. I have nothing to complain about health care in Canada, although I know people who have had problems there. In Brazil, my father had cancer and was treated by the public system. In 2000, he received a daily medication, I think it was called Interferon, and the treatment cost 10,000 dollars a month. The care was good, but when we went to the emergency room at Hospital das Clínicas for cancer, it was complicated. My father was lying on a stretcher among hundreds of other people. We wasted hours and hours, sometimes staying there all night. In Brazil, and I think in Canada too, I think it all depends a lot on the city and state you're in. There are places where the care is terrible, but there are places where it's reasonable. I don't think you can say it's good or bad as a whole, it always depends on the place.
Hi there, thank you so much for watching our video and for your comment. You are absolutely right about everything you mentioned above. However, one thing that is very important is you had mentioned you lived in Canada 16 years ago, but we left Canada in 2021 and believe me with this last government and after COIVD-19 you would not believe this is the same country that once existed. If you think the system was slow, now it's 1000 times slower and yes it is a public system, but in Canada you pay much higher taxes than in Brazil so the only system available should be much superior! These days the health care system in Canada is worse than some 3rd world countries (and I do not consider Brazil a 3rd world country at all and rather a developing country because believe me throughout my life I have lived and visited 3rd world countries and Brazil is much better than those places). Unfortunately, after 2018-2019 the country has changed a lot and not just in terms of health care. We are constantly in touch with our friends back there and now even security, car theft, murder, etc. is going to the roof. We do know that what we talk about in the video might sound very strange to a lot of people, but that is specifically why we made the video so other people outside of Canada know the reality. We do appreciate your input and hope you enjoy our other videos and subscribe to our channel. All the best!

Thanks for watching our video 👍
Viva o SUS !
Verdade!! 🤗
Long Live SUS ❤🇧🇷
Thanks for watching our video! 😊
sus(brazil)is actually best healthcare in world
It is indeed very reliable and efficient
@@global_citizens obviously i am brasilian resident of asian origin
The numbers don't say this. This merit goes to Spain, but we can dream, one day who knows!
@@0102MOA dont trust or rely on numbers.. according to google usa is the heaven on hearth and uk has best healthcare but the reality is different ..usa and specially united kingdom has the most worst healthcare in the world
@@0102MOA dont trust on American and European influenced media..west never wants to show the reality of the world, it only wants to make itself look better, which it is not at all..have you ever heard that in newyork people poops inside running train? or uk has most worst healthcare in world ?..and these both facts are truth and with proofs. spain is what we all know similarly
Nice factual video, where do you guys live ?
Your wife looks like she is from the south where I live- Santa Catarina ? RS ? Parana ?
YES the healthcare is excellent here. I have lived here since 2001 off and on, from Florida and also a Canadian
Recently had a Qtip stuck in my right ear one evening, went to SUS emergency and they removed it within an hour
We also have private insurance called AMOR SAUDE, it costs about $5usd per month and $6 usd for the DR each time.
My DR here in SC is the best DR I have even been to, he is wonderful
AMOR SAUDE is all over Brasil from SC to the north PE, PB - check them out
Have lived in the north most of my time - Recife, Joao Pessoa where my wife is from but now live in Floroanopolis
Ready to buy a 2nd place in JP soon for the warm weather and nice and safe beaches
Am Canadian but never lived in Canada, my mother came from Montreal so I have US and CAD citizenship
Hi there, thank you so much for watching our video and your kind comment :)
Right now since we are perpetual travellers, we don't live in one place, but we are from Montreal, Canada; Mariana is originally Brazilian though from Florianópolis, SC so you were right on ;)
We could not agree more regarding the health care system in Brazil. It is a world apart form the failing Canadian health care system! We have visited JP also and do have a video in that city, but we were there only for 1 night and then the next day we had to leave so unfortunately we didn't get to spend that much time there.
Thanks again for reaching out and we hope you enjoy our content.
Please do keep in touch
All the best
