  • One of the most common water quality measurements used by water professionals and homeowners alike is a TDS test. TDS, an acronym for total dissolved solids, is the measurement of the total amount of dissolved organic and inorganic content present in your water. While TDS can illuminate elevated levels of dissolved salts or chemicals from industrial waste, it not a one-size-fits-all solution. Water possesses many contaminants that are not represented by a TDS test. Furthermore, many water filtration systems are addressing problems unrelated to TDS, so testing their water’s TDS is irrelevant.     I started getting interested in water quality when we completed the construction of our new house in Mexico. I did researched reverse osmosis systems and water testing (PPM). We currently have 3 houses; N. Dallas, S. Texas and Mexico. Our tap water in Dallas measured 465 ppm, S. Texas house tap was 486, and the Mexican house 127 to my surprise. I bought and installed a 6 stage reverse osmosis system in our S. Texas house and got a 44 ppm. The water tastes good and we definitely see the improvement. Soon, this week I will be installing the R.O. system in our Mexican house; we get tired of bringing bottled water up the stairs.

    TDS doesn't mean anything as far as the number goes, because it doesn't tell what those dissolved solids are, you could have arsenic or lead in your water and it only comes up as a number. The only way to test water is to have a lab test it, not everyone drinks city tested water. If the city water is so terrible that you need to spend thousands of dollars on a reverse osmosis filter system, it would be time to make or buy a distillation system, that way you aren't going to get heavy metals like arsenic, lead , and who knows what else. As far as pesticides an activated charcoal filter will filter that out, but it has to be activated charcoal, regular charcoal won't work.

      My reverse osmosis 6 stage system cost $300 and I installed it myself. You don't have to spend a lot of money unless you have Costco or Culligan units and installation. The ones from Apex in Amazon are just as good or better.

    I have a Water Factory SQC4 RO system in my house living only two people. August last year, I replaced all four cartridges including the membrane. Tested filtered water was 21ppm while city water was 175ppm. Today, I did not touched the membrane but changed all other three cartridges. After draining three tanks of water, I tested and surprisingly the filtered water read 221ppm, while city water still at 175ppm. Why is that?

      You probably need to run your filtration system for several days and then take another reading.

    I've just changed my filters and even after running the water through for a period of time, PPM are showing 151. It was only 9 before I changed them. Wondering if I put them in upside down?

    Lately I have noticed staining in my sinks and toilets. They come back within a week or so. Would this tester be a good way to find out why?

    Hi
    Please answer my question i am very confused
    My well water is at 3000 TDS after membrane and post filter its at 650 TDS but after T33 filter it became 290 to 320 TDS.
    Why....?
    Why T33 filter is reducing TDS should i used another t33 to reduce more TDS level?
    Also using UV light in it..!

    I just poured one cup of tap water and it said 320 and then I poured some water I got from the filter down the street and it's 2 or 3. If I mix 1 Cup one with one cup of the other the TDS adds up at 158. I'd love to understand why diluting it reduces the number rather than maintaining the same number. Or why it's not 322 assuming the filtered water had some type of TDS that the tap water did not have thus adding them together as a total number. In theory if it's 1/10 of one versus nine-tenths of the other what happened to those 320 TDS in the 1/10 when all of a sudden it's probably only 32

      TDS is measured in parts per million (PPM) so if you add 320 from one glass to 2 from the other you get 322 divided by 2 (glasses) is 161, very close tou your readings of 158

    Most RO water will be in the range of 0-3ppm.

    2:07 so does that mean that the higher the level, the less conductive it is, or the other way around?

      higher means more conductive purer the water less conductive it is

    What is good TDs? Is 180 is good drinking water?

      No. Above 50 is not good.

      YES. 180 TDS is excellent for drinking. The TDS levels should not be too low where they lose even all the essential minerals like magnesium and calcium. Below 300 is good.

      TDS is a number of solids that’s been dissolved. The better question is what’s been dissolved! If it’s something harmful then any number would be bad. Have it checked by a lab.

      In my understanding, any reading above 201 is considered contaminated. So rating from best to acceptable, that would be 0 - 200 respectively.
