Marlena (Lizzy Caplan) isn’t feeling well. Rob (Michael Stahl-David) asks for help in finding Beth. Unfortunately, Marlena starts bleeding from her mouth and eyes and dies. The group is then helped by a nice soldier.

What’s the movie Cloverfield about?
Rob (Michael Stahl-David) has taken a job as a vice president for the Slusho company, which necessitates his moving to Tokyo. His brother, Jason (Mike Vogel), and his girlfriend, Lily (Jessica Lucas) throw a surprise going-away party for him. Rob's best friend, Hud (T.J. Miller) is recruited to videotape the event but spends much of his time trying to hit on Marlena (Lizzy Caplan). The party is suddenly stopped when nearby explosions threaten everyone’s security . When the party-goers leave the building, the severed head of the Statue of Liberty is hurled into the street in front of them. Hud records an enormous creature several blocks away collapsing the Woolworth Building. Later, during the city's evacuation, the creature's tail destroys the Brooklyn Bridge, killing Jason and several other people. When Rob receives a message from Beth informing him she’s trapped in her apartment and unable to move, Rob, Hud, Lily, and Marlena start venturing into a city in chaos to rescue Beth.

I like how nobody's talking about how she died. Like, she fought off those crabs and STILL died. Imagine how many others went through the same thing, randomly exploding in the middle of the streets while all of that chaos raged on.

This death even though technically off screen, was very effective. One of the most memorable out of any movie I’ve seen.
Me walking into my grandparents house at like 10 years old and seeing this play out on the SciFi channel was definitely memorable, to say the least 😂

Yeah, when he’s telling the military guys to shoot him, it always makes me a little sad that they don’t.
To be fair Rob said that they didn’t have to with him. They had to go with him though because we need the movie to happen.

Mission results: 1 widow evacuated, 5 casualties (including the companion you went to save)

this is undoubtedly Miller's best vocal performance.
It’s awesome that they kept this movie at a high PG-13/low R rating level. It’s classy as a movie, but it’s also really gritty.
It would be fucking alsome of it was rated R they were in a been lot more gore and bite scenes!!
yeah this is definitely one of the more graphic PG-13s, i think the film leaves just enough to the imagination to be very effective

I love the concept of this movie, its not an alien invasion. its wild alien creatures from another dimension basically teleporting into our world by accident. They arnt here to kill us, just confused and doing what they are biologically meant to do. Super cool

@@jalenthompson3481 probably bacteria. Alien or if you've watched Paradox, it would be a transdimensional bacteria from the bite. Eating her flesh and hitting a critical point of reproduction that it rapidly releases gases as it consumes her. My guess anyway.
I think that's actually a technical oopsie and that's why we get the "oh shit" and they kept it running and it kinda works, even the girl seems to be in a "should we stop or..." moment before the action keeps going.

The song Do I Have Your Attention was in the party earlier. It said “ I tried so hard despite your rejection” which talks about how Hud tries to get her and win her over. And later it says “nobody knows til someone explodes” hinting to this
am i the only one who dislike Rob so much? the main protagonist is unlikable asf, putting your friend in danger and wasted their life just to help him saving his ex gf...if i had a friend like Rob i will immediately leave him behind especially in the apocalypse scenario like this movie
In his defense, he stated multiple times they didn't have to come with him. It was their choice to do so, sooo I don't get why you'd blame him.
And even if that was an ex, he still loves and cares for her. Of course he was going to try and save her. He lost his brother too, his main drive is not losing the woman he loves as well. It's a compelling story honestly. Though if you're talking pure survival and whatnot, then yeah Rob would be horrible and a liability lol.
I watched this movie blind as a kid, and this scene scared the shiet out of me, watching somebody explode like that for just a fraction of a second just gave me fuel for thought for hours on end, it was the first time I saw something "gore-ish" in a movie, great movie tho.

Those little dog-spider bastards are some sort of parasite that feeds on the big monster's blood. The big monster's blood contains a chemical compound that can be refined and used as a food additive; it causes dopamine release and gives you an energy boost.

@@sagesaria My first thought upon watching this way back when was that she exploded, she wasn't shot. Mostly because there was no gunshot sound. Given the circumstances, it's highly unlikely any of those soldiers are carrying silenced weapons, and the soldiers I don't think went back with her, they just helped drag her. Medical personnel wouldn't have weapons.

It's strange because them taking her away was likely damage control for keeping panic levels low and of course to contain the mess they know she's inevitably going to make within the next few seconds. Really it only succeeds in containing the mess, because I can promise you, any single victim in that makeshift hospital was probably trying to scream like crazy.

Nah its just how sea ticks hunt. They inject a toxin into bigger prey which, when coming into contact with water, makes it swell. Though when the ticks are as big a dog and its human the reaction is more explosive. She actually died becuase they poured a bottle of water on the wound when she got bit.
Crazy that I see nobody talking about the foreshadowing in the exact scene. We see the soldier that got bit is completely exposed and has blood running down from his eyes and other face holes indicating he already exploded.
When I saw this as a kid it absolutely petrified me. This is the first time I slowed down this death scene, and I was surprised that her body bloats then pops, and you can even see her rips protruding out. That’s a high level of gore for a PG-13 film haha

She basically was bitten by an oversized version of a flea that are on the body of the Cloverfield monster, imagine getting a mosquito bite but the swelling is on your entire body
The HSP (The Parasite) bited her causing a mild infection in the body. But since she drank slusho which contained extreme amounts of nectar which caused a massive swelling with the nectar came in interaction with the parasite infection in her body, blowing her up from her central cavity where the parasite is able to infect successfuly. Although if she din't drink the slusho she would've been alive but probaly still die from the toxicness of saliva.

When the trailer originally dropped, the scene of Marlena about to explode had people going "What the fu**?!" I can't believe that movie is almost 20 years old.
What exactly happened to her?
She got bitten by one of those things 1:44 when they were trying to escape the subway tunnel and somehow the toxin (or someting) from the bite cause her to swell and explode, like this dude 1:01
It's easier to slee if you slow it down in the settings menu, but once they pull her behind the plastic curtain, her entire midsection suddenly bloats until she explodes. I could've sworn I saw the shadow of her ribcage just before she fell.

By the way they react this furious, there is a chance that this is how the creatures procreate, by infecting humans who burst open when filled with really fast growing beasts

@sjonnieplayfull5859 could also be that they wanted to isolate her before the reaction happens fully and maybe try to save her. My guess for how is preemptively creating exit holes for the gas created by the reaction to go through and give her something to help clot her blood. Better to a hole in the chest than an exploded body.
There’s a guy ROANOAK something and he did a biological break down of how she would have exploded. There’s a substance in their saliva that when mixed with water causes combustion. She didn’t start getting sick until they cleaned her bite out with the water bottle. It causes gaseous bubbles to form and the path of least resistance is the abdomen. Great video
Roanonke gaming, mans a biologist who does similar break downs on creatures from other movies/videogames. He mainly did those on Dead Space monsters years ago.

Ignoring the whole, "Who the hell keeps the camera rolling and trained on everything that's going on while their lives are in danger?" aspect of these movies ("Paranormal Activity" was another one), I quite enjoyed "Coloverfield".

Okay. As I looked up its Wikipedia page, the movie’s cast listed Lizzy Caplan as Marlena at the top as if she’s the main character(?). If that’s the case, then why did she die of at the movie’s premature point? Is it another Drew Barrymore-Scream situation or something? I’m quiet confused. I remember that, in this movie, Marlena wasn’t even the main character at all.
