- Buying A 1989 Import Mazda MX-5 (NA) Aka Roadster Eunos - Walkaround Tour & Review
A friend of mine told me about a Mazda MX5 that she bought from her father a few years back. It had been sitting in her garage off the road for a couple of years and they needed the space and it to go to a good home. So naturally she called me!
I went to view the car, however, it had a flat battery and flat tyres and was stuck in a dark garage (not ideal for having a good look at it) - I agreed to pop back a few days later with a view of taking my air compressor and a jump pack, getting it out of the garage and having a proper walk around and look at the car.
Which is what I did. This video shows my in-depth look at the car and a bit of a walk around and review.
I didn't buy the car - for a few reasons. (Mainly ... I'm too big for it) so have told her i would help her broker the sale. SO - should you fancy a Mazda MX-5 NA that needs minimal fettling to be a grand old summer toy... please do let me know

Jon I am very tempted! I had my old 1.8 UK model for 9 years and let that go in 2018 (regretted it ever since) 😢
I may be in touch via DM. 🤔
Please do 😁
Well done Jon a good video and love the original mx5 my friends dad had a limited edition racing green one just great no frills open top motoring
My brother said the same when he went to buy one as he is also 6’4’’ so understand what you mean
Hope someone manages to buy it will be a lovely car with some TLC Daniel
Thanks for watching Daniel. I have no doubts it will find a lovely home quite quickly.
Great car! I hope it finds a home. Unfortunately, I am unable at this time.
I hope so too!
Great find Jon!
Many thanks
May need to budget for a cambelt / water pump, not cheap on Labour. As an early Eunos, It’s a Short Nose Crank engine, so needs an experienced mx5 friendly mechanic to do the cambelt, as there in a woodruff key, otherwise engine damage
I'm glad someone here knows what they are talking about. As I say ... I'm not an expert on these
I changed mine after watching RUclips tutorials! Its doable for an enthusiast, although it took me longer than planned and I bought an mx5 owners club metal key that jams the cambelts.
Dad has enough to keep him busy,, maybe the Micra could be his next project
We need to get my MR2 ready for MOT and then I think you are right!
will be looking in no worries@@JonCoupland
Looks like a decent car. Can definitely understand why it wasn’t for you though.
Sadly I also have nowhere to store it in the dry
Is it 170k miles or 170k km then the clocks were changed? Might be over estimating the mileage looking at the seats etc?
That's a good point! So the MOT history shows 172,000 miles and THEN 42,000 MILES ... Its a bit of an unknown. Were estimating 180,000 miles
It will be kms
@@wayneofwolves2807 I agree thinking about it 😄
I’ve owned a Eunos for 10 years, mileage is in km’s, the importer will have fitted a mph face, so speedo would be in mph
@@badbooks476 ahhh ok! Interesting
TR7 fixed head would have been a far better and a damm sight more interesting in my opinion
That would give Dad something to weld 😂
@@JonCoupland
But better off in the long run and so much more interesting than any Mazda
@@metalman4141 that's certainly subjective ... I'll stick to my MR2 😂
Poor excuse being too tall for it. Foamectomy the seat. Roof down. You'll be fine.
I gave more reasons than that 😂 I think I gave 3 or 4?!
Might be the width of me that's the issue and not necessarily the length 😂
Go on a diet, your knee joints & hip joints will thank you in later life!
Absolutely
