The classic illustrator whose work Sienkiewicz is riffing on in the # 24 cover is Coles Phillips, famous in the early 20th century for using negative space in this way for his “fadeaway girls.”
The MK 15 cover was by Miller and Joe Jusko. Earl Norem was a cover painter who did a lot of covers for Savage Sword of Conan, but the artist I saw most of in the late 70s was Bob Larkin, whom I consider the Alex Ross of his day.
I enthusiastically concur, Timothy! Bob Larkin was indeed the Alex Ross of the late seventies and early eighties! In fact, Ross has applauded Larkin's work and even cited him as one of his influences! Larkin's cover for Dazzler #1 (March 1981) is both beautiful and breathtaking!
One of the few cases when there won’t be much Kayfabe effect since this Moon Knight run is already ultra rare to find even in most recent collected editions.
I've been reading comics for over 45 years. This is my all-time favorite run. That comment at 8:15 hurts... maybe read the stories before dumping on them. If you're pressed for time issues 14, 24, 25, and 26 are masterpieces.
I totally agree with what you said. That 8:15 comment hurt me as well. This is one of my favorite comic book runs of all time. The only thing I like more is the Moon Knight stories in the Hulk Magazine.
I first encountered MK via a story printed in HULK Magazine...and it was glorious Sienkiewicz painted(?) art...the story was the first part of the two part plot regarding Marc's brother in his Hatchetman persona.
The Marvel by Frank Miller omnibus includes ALL of his non-Daredevil Marvel work. Including everyone cover and Hostess ad he did. You can find it for cheap too. I did an overview of it here: ruclips.net/video/qzLAUpNyrm4/видео.html
What an evolution from the master himself! No wonder Bill Sienkiewicz is my favourite artist. Funny thing is that he was just beginning to scratch the surface with his style. Great stuff, guys!
Bill is one of those artists that it took me a long while to get into. I remember seeing covers by him (specially the New Mutants ones) and being freaked out, not really understanding what I was seeing. I distinctly remember going through quarter bins in the 90's and skipping those issues because they turned me off. Now I see his work and I want it badly. Such a great artist.
You and me both! And Sienkiewicz's cover for the "Power Of Iron Man" trade paperback in the late eighties (which reprinted the classic "Demon In A Bottle" story arc from Iron Man #120-#128) isn't half bad, either!
Another fantastic episode, every day we should praise Khonshu for giving us the work of Sienkiewicz! Or as I call him SANKOWITZ. When I was a kid his stuff didn't appeal to me because it seemed "messy" and now that I'm not a dumbass kid, his artwork is some of my favorite because it IS beautifully messy. All hail the sankster! (Also, Ed arranging the thumbnail is hilarious, I know how that feels!)
I love this channel. It always amazes me the technical knowledge you guys show when your talking about technique and how easily you recognize artist. Hope this helps the algorithm.
Pretty unusual at the time that he went far afield in finding new influences for comics art, and managed to synthesize some really diverse work. He was showing us that you could learn something from everyone.
Sienkiewicz is GOATed. Put 'em next to Corben, Kieth, Mobieus, Quitely, Darrow, Arthur Adams, Kuder, Nick Bradshaw, and well now this is just a list of artists with styles I like, my bad
As far as I can remember much of this series was direct market only. At least Im pretty sure that's the case for all the issues without the comics code approval. So the 666 Werewolf by Night was never on the newsstand spinner.
Due to critical and commercial acclaim for both Doug Moench's solid writing and Sienkiewicz's amazing artwork, Moon Knight became a direct sales title beginning with issue #15 (January 1982).
Damn! As if it wasn't hard enough (or expensive enough) to track down these original issues, yis had to go and do a video about them!! Just kidding, this is brilliant. And I just bit the bullet and bought the Epic Collection trade of this series. But that is just not the same as having these originals. The colour and repro differences are night and day. Finding it hard to love trades anymore after watching so much of videos praising original newsprint...
I’d love to hear Jim and Ed on Stray Toasters. I feel like we start to see Sienkiewicz’s movie poster and commercial work start to come out in these covers but it really blossoms in that later, more experimental work. Thanks for the vid!
Holy crap! I didn't even know you guys had a show! Loving Red Room. I love the analysis on this video. Never knew about a lot of these covers and back covers.
I know you guys don't do a ton of really modern Marvel stuff, but issues 6-9 of Jeff Lemire's Moon Knight run has art by James Stokoe, Francesca Francavilla and Greg Smallwood intertwined together and it's pretty great.
I know Ed and Jim kind of refuse to watch MCU programming, but honestly, the reactions from them would be very funny and probably insightful (how doing at least one thing that is kind of irrelevant, like Dolph Lungrend's Punisher, that would be a satisfying compromise, lol)...I do hate on the Moon Knight show how they say in the credits "based on the Marvel comics" instead of crediting the creators directly...very weak from Disney.
I just watched videos of Batman 251, Green Lantern 85 and Superman vs Muhammad Ali and I really cringed at what they were doing to those books. He just bends the page at the 15 1/2 minute mark of Green Lantern 85. I eould type out the time stamp but I believe it will link it to the Moon Knight video. ruclips.net/video/CqyNFogHegQ/видео.html
Nice video. Sienkiewicz is one of my favorite artists. His style is so unique. Just a constructive criticism, the way his name is pronounced by you guys is not really correct.
Honestly, I really hated Sienkiewicz's early art. Way too much like a low budget Neal Adams (which even he does admit). But when he started doing the really abstract oil painting in Elektra: Assassin ... damn, ... that's when he really got interesting. And I still can't get into Moon Knight. It just doesn't do it for me. Actually, I find the quick rise in price on Issue 1 for 50 cents, to issue 26 which is only two years later and it 75 cents! The cover for issue# 34 seems to be where he's beginning to experiment and develop his own thing - dropping the Neal Adams worship. Much more artistic and just better.
The classic illustrator whose work Sienkiewicz is riffing on in the # 24 cover is Coles Phillips, famous in the early 20th century for using negative space in this way for his “fadeaway girls.”
If Marvel put out a book of Sienkiewicz's covers I would pre-order it
In issues 22-30 you see him start to shift from the Neal Adams style to his own. Especially issue 26 titled "Hit It!"
The MK 15 cover was by Miller and Joe Jusko.

Moon kings, no smoking never forgot that, every time i see a no smoking sign it brings me back.
One of the greatest two year run ever - so blessed to have been able follow Sienkiewicz's evolution on this title at the time....
That #34 cover, that's where I see Simonson, especially the water
One of the few cases when there won’t be much Kayfabe effect since this Moon Knight run is already ultra rare to find even in most recent collected editions.
Sienkiewicz is just the absolute best. His stuff terrified me as a kid. Now I'm obsessed with it. I'd love to have him on an ongoing Marvel title.
Not sure where it fits but there is also Shadow vol 3. Great video! One of my fav artists!
Notice those later issues of moon knight had a .75 ¢ cover price, no bar code, no ads. They weren't on a spinner rack.
Beginning with issue #15 (January 1982), Moon Knight was only available in comic shops as a direct sales title.

@@Golf8802 Hatchet Man!!

Issue 3 cover always made me think of Gray Morrow.
I have this entire run but have yet to read it. Must fix that. Thanks guys.
I have those issues in Swedish. I love them.

Issue #36 is the culmination of his evolution on the series! You’ve gotta get your hands on it.
What an evolution from the master himself! No wonder Bill Sienkiewicz is my favourite artist. Funny thing is that he was just beginning to scratch the surface with his style. Great stuff, guys!
Sienkiewicz is a frequent inker/finisher of Denys Cowan’s pencils.
Wow. Just...wow. Insanely gifted artist

had a blast knowing of Sienkiewicz for the first time. As a fan of Bisley. then, I entered a world of heritage, influence and sharp shit
The Moon Knight essentials are worth looking at too.
Just great! Would be cool if you did something on Dave McKean covers!
The cover to 29 is such a masterpiece. Book scared and fascinated the hell out of me when I was a kid seeing it on the newsstand.
I always loved his cover for the OG X-Men dark phoenix saga tpb from 84'
You and me both! And Sienkiewicz's cover for the "Power Of Iron Man" trade paperback in the late eighties (which reprinted the classic "Demon In A Bottle" story arc from Iron Man #120-#128) isn't half bad, either!
#15 is Jusko and Miller :)

That MK #24 feels very Coles Phillips inspired to me
Denys Cowan and Bill Sienkiewicz have worked together a lot on titles like The Question and Hardware. Great stuff.
I enjoy Bill Sienkiewicz a ton. Just a phenomenal artist.
I love this channel. It always amazes me the technical knowledge you guys show when your talking about technique and how easily you recognize artist. Hope this helps the algorithm.
Love you guys. Just cottoned on to your channel. Have you done anything on Keith Giffen? Legion/Ambush Bug/ Justice League that you can point me to?
This is just a tease... show us all the New Mutants covers now. Please
Wonderful video!

Just finished watching the turtle vid and now this! Thanks for the spoils!
This is great guys. Thank you!!! How I went my whole childhood never reading moon knight is beyond me. I guess I was too entrenched in spawn haha.
Holy crap! I didn't even know you guys had a show! Loving Red Room. I love the analysis on this video. Never knew about a lot of these covers and back covers.
100% please go through all the new mutants covers.

I think "Toothbrush" Fukuda probably helped Bill ink parts of the cover to #23..
I’d love to see you guys do an overview of Stray Toasters by Sienkieicz!
Moon Knight from the Dead (2014) by Warren Ellis and Declan Shalvey is freaking awesome in my opinion. They are contained stories in every issue.
Why did they skip the #11 cover? Is there something controversial about the image?
Yeah, I noticed that, too!
I thought his name was pronounced “sink-a-witz”. Learned something new, thanks.
Did anyone else cringe when he started really bending the pages and creasing the spine!?

Just man handling those books🙄 great video but Why not buy beat up reader copies for this demonstration purpose 🤷♂️
