  • The operation of an unmanned reconnaissance aircraft of the U.S. military has started at the Kanoya Air Base of the Maritime Self-Defense Force in Kagoshima Prefecture.
Just before 8:00 a.m. on November 21, an American drone took off from the Kanoya Air Base amid a thick fog.
The Japanese and U.S. governments deployed eight MQ9 U.S. military drones at the Kanoya Air Base to monitor the Chinese military, which has been making moves to expand its maritime presence.
The Kyushu Defense Bureau initially told the city of Kanoya that they hoped to begin operations around July, but due to equipment problems and poor weather conditions, preparations did not proceed, resulting in a delay of approximately four months.
The operation will last one year, until November 20, 2023.
Shigeru Nakanishi, mayor of Kanoya City, commented on the start of the operation at a press conference as follows.
