I have operated with an Exmark 30 inch commercial mower for 3 seasons. I put a lot of hours on this mower and I agree with your pros and cons. I am actually getting ready to replace the transmission for the 2nd time but 1st out of warranty and now I just had the cable to engage the blade broke.... but I really can't complain, I used this as my main mower for 1 and 1/2 seasons and it's still ticking!
very good review, and I agree with you totally. I have 3 of the exmark 30s. The only two things you didn't mention that might be worth mentioning is the air filter system. IT sucks, and if you don't keep your filter clean, and use filter coat or vasaline at the bottom seal, your needle valve will get dirty. The second thing is to always turn the fuel valve off after each mowing. We let the fuel starve out and that's how the mower gets turned off until the next job. Reason is this...when the dirt from the filter gets past the filter and into the carb, sometimes the needle valve wont close completely and then gas actually continues to leak into the cylinder We had them actually hydro lock because of the liquid fuel in the cylinder. Then you have to pull the spark plug and drain the excess fuel from the cylinder. You are absolutely correct on buying new. I bought 2 new, and one used. The used one has already needed a new engine, and a new transmission. Yeah....it would have been better to have bought new for sure. They are great mowers for small to medium sized yards, as long as they don't get too overgrown. Keep these topics in mind, and you will enjoy using them!
+rbljackson Thanks for the comment man. We covered the air filter problem in our Toro Turfmaster Review. My dealer told me that the foam at the bottom of the filter was poorly made that it would chip and break off, causing a build up and blockage in the carburetor.
The filter if not tight dust will get in and youll need a new motor
We have 6 of them and for mulching it sucks also the motor sets to far to the left you can shut the mower off when you mow under bushes and it boggs down in thick grass the shoot is to long it will clog up on wet grass and it gets light in front when you fill the bag and the dip stick holder will leak. Also you will go threw the blade belts and belt gears
Also belt tension for the blade belts has to be adjusted every 50 hours even if your mower is adjusted correctly it will clog because of the long shoot
Blade belt and gears sucks it does cost alot of money to replace
Good review, thanks! I currently own a 2012 Toro 30" Timemaster (residential version of the Turfmaster). I plan to purchase an ExMark Commercial 30 as soon as the dealerships have the 2016's in stock. Multiple problems with my Timemaster. I have never used it for commercial use. No more than 4-5 hours per week for about 8 months out of the year. Yet I'm on my THIRD set of wheels, THIRD set of cables, and SECOND set of belts. Muffler guard broke, kill switch broke, blade handle broke, paint chipping/peeling..... and on and on. The only good thing that I can say is that the cut quality is outstanding.
A friend of mine offered me $100 for it, so that solves the multitude of never-ending problems with this mower.
After your many reviews of the ExMark C30, I'm convinced it will be a very nice and long-lasting mower for residential use. Thanks!
Bill
The timemaster is a huge puece of shit. Same engine as their recycler series but having to move two blades. Its underpowered.
The timemaster also has a plastic transmission. Yup plastic. In a $1100 mower.
Great Job on Your Video presentation ! I saw one today and was thinking about purchasing a new one like you said from a dealer I go to church with ! To many parts with these big mowers that can go wrong..they need to last longer if you are going to take care of your customers !
Admrl1957Staunton only problem not many places service these mowers. I found some not all Ace Hardware that service them
Really enjoyed your video on this mower and the toro turf. Master i have a few questions
1. Do. You have a video. On tightening the belts for. The turfmaster
2. With the wheels do you think they can be tranfered to the turfmaster
3. The new bag would it fit on the turfmaster
Thank you for sharing great tools information. well quality may last us longer
Will u guys still use the bigger z turn and dump truck
How high you cut the grass with the exmark
Great review, bought a exmark 30 the next day. thx you
Great reviews. I have had many different 21 inch mowers Toro,Honda, John Deere, snapper etc. They all have plusses and minuses. I also have had an Exmark 30 for 2 years. You mentioned that it gets clogged. One thing I have always done is keep the bag clean. Power wash it. If it can't breathe it will clog easier. One thing I don't like about the 30 is it only can cut down to inch and a half. hrc216 can do 3/4 inch. For me Honda has good motor and trans but the deck cracks handles break height adjusters get play creating a bumpy cut. The Exmark is not perfect but costs me less to maintain than a honda. The honda goes through blades fast and tires. Over a 2 year period that I have had the exmark the tires and blades alone I would buy for a honda would make up the added purches of the machine. EXMARK DID THIS MOWER RIGHT!
Great video
Hey man I watched the toro review does the exmark have same problems with broken blades and shit air filter?
The belts break and the belt gears does wear out the filter just add a small spong on top of the air filter
A great review... getting me sold into this rather than a 34 zero turn.
I wouldnt but these mowers get the zero turn or a old 2 stroke 21
The 30 cuts great but anykind of weight in the bag the front floats also if you out line any bushes the throttle is on the left side and you can shut off the mower and you have to check on the belts daily you be better off with a 36 walk behind encore i think are the best but any zero turn is a big help the 30 doesnt like hills floats up wards but also charges diwn hill and heavy easy to raise and lowers but thats all i can say and if you have big hands changing the oil filter youll have to use tools you have a gass line and a rail in the way
I'm pretty happy with my $500 dollar Hondas. Just bag if wet and use rear discharge if dry, never even tried the Mulcher. Also a lot easier on and off the trailer. Commercial walk behinds weigh a ton and wear us down big time. My local Toro dealer is a crook so happy to buy from Home Depot, and they are open longer hours. May try a 30 at some point but Hondas are really hard to beat pound for pound, not to mention price.
If you use it full time, Honda lasts about 10% as long as Toro. It's worth $1500 for the better mower.
Nice video. I was on the fence between the Toro and the Exmark and I think you sold me. I think sun exposure makes the tops of the bags go first too.
My pros and cons are from what I’m experiencing!
Pros: I really like how the blade stops spinning as soon as I let go the clutch lever. I remember long time ago folks would get finger cut trying to get clumps out from underneath clogging up the blade.
Cons: my mower for some reason isn’t filling up the mulch bag and in the middle of the cut I have to manually stick my hands underneath and get the clumps out. This happens even on dry grass but I do have trees blocking the sun so more times than not the grass seems to be little bit on the damp side from the morning dew (it’s damped even around mid day)
Edited: another pro: the engine seems to be very good excellent to be exact. It’s quite the way it runs! I remember when I had other mowers it’ll make my dog go crazy inside the house but she doesn’t make a pip and I think it’s because it isn’t as loud as other mowers
Song at 1:00?
Exmark 30 is a great mower, you just need to do the proper maintenance and understand its limitations. The belts need to be monitored and adjusted often. You also need to keep the deck clean of build up if you want the best cut quality. Mine has about 200 hours on it and it runs like its brand new. I would have had some issues by now if I hadn't been staying on top of belt adjustments. The only real con with this mower is the transmission can't pull it up really steep hills. You also have to give it a nudge sometimes to get it moving on a hill of any kind. Once its moving it will climb some decent hills though. The money savings compared to a 36 walk behind or stand on is massive!
Well built mower, but tires are still too thin on the 30 incher and leave depressions in client's yard. Have had two client's actually ask us not to use the 30 inch mower on their lawn. Great video, thank you for all the detail.
I noticed the same thing about the tracks in the yard. Its a very heavy mower. It needs wider wheels especially in the rear.
Yes, the honda transmissions are built like rocks. Super strong and super tough. I have had a bag full of wet grass going up steep hill, and it just trucks up it like it's nothing
Great review!!! Can u pls tell me what size yards y’all were cutting with the 30inch mowers? My yards will be under 6,000-7,000 net sqft yards.
Trouble with this mower is the added costs it does need a weekly going over
It's about minus 15 degrees, this time of year really is comforting to watch the stripes form
how much is the exmark 30 vs turfmaster?
+max67eagles I own 3 Exmark 30's. 2013 I got one for $1700. 2014 I got one for $1840. 2015 I paid just over $2000 with tax.
does it have 2 or 4 wheel drive?
sota lawns 2
I love that lawn mower I'm in the process of getting one myself I have DVT,in one of my legs can't stand long periods of time just need something to cut my time in half .....
Does the exmark commercial 30 have a variable speed transmission?
Yes it does, it's very similar to a gas pedal on a car.
+Ambro's Landscaping Inc. I noticed in one of your videos you started using the exmark instead of toro. Was there 1 or 2 big things that made you switch?
MY BROTHER YOU ARE CONFUSING US ONE MINUTE YOU LOVE THE 30 IN THE NEXT YOU ARE SELLING THE 30 I DON'T UNDERSTAND YOUR LOGIC
Thanks for the great video review. I've been on the fence in regards to this mower for a while. It seems like whatever time savings are achieved are quickly offset by the increased maintenance, the inability to get into tight spaces, and the restricted use of the machine to what appears to be relatively flat, relatively dry, and not overly grown/thick lawns. In Canada, where I am, these units go for about $2400. Quite expensive for what seems like a niche mower. How does this thing do as a bagger...especially in thick/wet grass?
Yep it is
It sucks

i was excited about purchasing one of these but decided against due to this video. I can't have a mower down with a transmission issue within a year. looking at honda's anyone else agree or disagree?
The Honda mower I ran was rear discharge
I've also got the exmark 30 every time I engage the blades it makes a high pitch squealing noise for about 5 seconds thought it was the belts and pulleys, sprayed it with belt solution but isn't helping if anyone know more let me know thx
Hey-I also have an exmark 30" & gravely 36". Each of them making the squealing noise for no more than 5 seconds. From what I have been told and experienced is that its from having the belt good and tight. For example if my belt is loose it doesn't make the noise, but when I tighten them and engage the blades they chirp/squeal for a few seconds. I have herd this on many other mowers when the blades are engaged. Sorry your question is getting responded to so late, hope this helps.
+LivinLife hey thx for your input I replaced the belt that went from the engine to the blades and it worked but now a little into the season the squeal is back but only for like 1 second
A Cut Above like sneakers squeaking on a gym floor. It's normal.
It could be the belt tightener going out the pully had that happen a few times
I put it on bag with no bag on it and it rear discharged
Something to be mindful for this mower, after you turn the mower off, use the red dial on the fuel line to turn the gas off to the motor. If you don't excess gas can get into the cylinders and cause issues with the motor. Thankfully, warranty covered mine.
As much as I would like to get a bigger mower there is still nothing bulletproof about this mower. I have been following the reviews since it came out. Clogs easily, wrong. Belt drive, wrong. No hydrostatic transmission, wrong. Bad air filter, wrong. Cables loose adjustment, wrong. No O turn, wrong. I noticed that you were double cutting every lawn that you showed. The pavement was dry and the guy was in a t-shirt. So it even cuts lousy. Why are people buying this machine?
This year as an experiment for the wet season I didn't use my 21 Honda commercial and I used the 21 Honda with the plastic deck, what a dream! It plowed through hundreds of very wet lawns with out a problem. I don't know how many years it will last because it's not commercial but what a fine performer it is. If someone could make a 30 inch version of this machine they could corner the market.
Oncore 36 is a great machine and i use a toro 2 cycle 21 in lighter then anything they make now
Got mine and the motor did not start. Be careful try it before playing for it. I got my money back, the dealer was more than happy to do it. I dont know If all of them would do it. I doubt it.
Great video. For me, it's too heavy for a trim mower, and It's too slow and too much work for a main mower with 20 lawns per day (in my opinion).
So what walk behind mower do use or could recommend
Is bagging easier for the engine comparing to mulching ?
Yes it is because mulching your deck is full while mowing as to bagging its cut goes in the shoot and its bagged but if your mowing heavey wet grass the front of the mower does get lighter and your cut will be noticable
great review, so Im looking to either buy a new toto imd master 30" Or honda HRX Hydro drive. I think overall the Honda is a better mower but feel the Hydro drive is Jumpy, I cut on angles so when I turn around I was told you will need to let go of the bar clutch that engages the hydro drive, to slightly pull it back and then continue the other way, and then when it engages it jumps a bit especially when a bag is starting to fill up. DO you feel this is correct? I Feel the toro drive is smoother but may be a less unreliable long term?? Any help is appreciated.
Stick to the honda or oncore 36
Thank you
Sounds like a ton of likely headaches. I have hills and a honda. Want to cut my time down but all of these (Toro, Exmark, Cub, etc.) all have a ton of complaints and seem like they won't do what I need. It's just a simple lawn mower. Why cant these companies fix the problems with transmission, power and decks clogging?
Scag has a new one but they want 2500.00.
the Ybravo 25 is treating me right. Mulches great, bags even better, and is the same weight has the hrc216 honda (125lbs). The grass build up under the deck is very light, meaning i can mulch and have virtually zero buildup. And the price is about $800 less then the 30" exmarks.
Good to know whats the extra costs
Is it really $2,000?
I think they are over $2400 new I believe
I was looking forward to this review but you lost me when you said the belts were slipping on the turfmaster.Theres no way for the belt to slip because its a cogged belt.
Will Robinson the blades have two belts, the main belt and then the engagement belt. The engagement belt is the one that needs adjustments and can slip. Cut quality gets poor when that belt slips
Coggs wear out and weekly belt tightening
Hard to believe there are so many things wrong with an expensive commercial mower. Doesn't Toro (Exmark) test these designs be going to market? These mowers need the B&S intek 223cc engine. You can get one at smallenginewarehouse.com for $195. Should be an easy swap. The Kawasaki is way under powered for 30" except in the right conditions. Even the Craftsman Pro 28" comes with that engine as well as a striper at $799. So for wet grass do you guys go back to the Hondas?
Yes we use our Honda mowers in wet grass. We are now looking at getting rid of the 30" mowers all together. The belt tensioner constantly needs to be adjusted and tighten which lowers the blade speed and is not giving us the best cut (especially in wet grass).
Well, Ron Toro being a great company but using totally dumb engineers nerds whom think all this heavy crap that fails seem like a good idea It Isn't.it's dumb and very bad for professionals who need something super powerful fast and light. which has a blower in the front to dry the grass before you cut it when the lawns are wet. I hope they just get light Items and slap them together like brigs has done on some cheaper models
So what are you looking at? I wrestle with a 32" fixed deck and was looking at these for weight and height adjustments.
Ambro's Landscaping Inc. The belt adjustment is simple and easy. You should stick with the 30, my honda never really leaves my trailer. I do all my own maintenance though so maybe you got sick of large bills just for a belt adjustment
I go to my 36 oncore walk hehind
They're great until 6 months when the gear box takes a shit. It's too expensive to not last.
The “paint” doesn’t last because it’s not paint… it’s powder coat. I lost my first ExMark zero turn to rust because the moisture gets between the metal and the powder coating and rusts from the inside out. ExMark should use a 2 part, marine grade, epoxy paint. Powder coating SUCKS!
This mower is junk the two small pulleys break constantly at least twice a year costing me close to 300 a pop never never buy waste of money the only pro as mentioned in the video it does do great for leaves
No zero turn no thanks.
You can buy a Worldlawn 32" for cheaper than the exmark.
The Bradley 32" walk behind is slightly more expensive, has pneumatic tires and zero turn. The bradleys have a oil filter and oil drain plug.
You do realize that from like the 10:20 mark till at least the next yard your showing a toro
Ward Lawn Care & Landscaping watch from 0:35-0:50 and you will know why
I really like your videos and content but I can't hardly hear you seems like you're whispering just some food for thought keep up the videos
Unless your a pro, these mowers are silly, not to mention costly, for the avg. homeowner.
I HATE this machine. I have used 21" I have used larger ferris walk behind's and this machine nearly put me out of business. I lost thousands of dollars from time off work because this thing ripped my neck apart. For over a month I couldn't turn my head to the right. I was going to doctor multiple times(time off work), Chiropractor($60 a pop), Massage therapy($120 a pop), along with time off work, and not being able to do extra jobs on the weekend for 2 months. I finally sold it and finished the year off with 21's .....push... and the problems went away. I am not week.....I just finished shoveling 21 driveways by hand in 4-5 hours.
The cut is the best I've ever seen if..........you bag or side discharge. Mulching forget it unless it is bone dry and you are taking 1" off otherwise you make 2 passes and the deck is soooo full you can't believe it. The engine is weird. it just slows down for whatever reason I don't know. If you have a dead flat lawn this might be okay. My lawns are bumpy clay and this thing was a torture device. Maybe if you use it half the amount of time but what use is that. I want a mower I can use.
Jeez, how did this thing mess you up that bad? I'm by no means in great physical shape and have had no problems running the eXmark 30 on a semi-regular basis.
Jeez mister .were u pullung the exmark with ur tongue 😝 or lifting with ur neck .if so read the manual
Hate the 30”
Nothing but bad experience with this unit for me.
Total piece of s*** but one seven years ago it was junk but one last year and it was junk
Sounds like an overpriced pos mower
