Tuomas is the master of emotion; i know of no other composer who can get at your heartstrings like he can. of course he does have the best band you could ever wish for.
Absolutely true but in this case Marko wrote the melody and Tuomas added the lyrics.
You have to listen to "While Your Lips Are Still Red" from Wembley 2015 for something of the same kind of vibe. It's a ballad that featured in a Finnish romcom, lead by Marko, backing by Floor and Troy on the e-bow.

Marko is a Warwick endorser, they own Framus too; Warwick is a German firm and they make basses, the Framus name is for regular guitars.
That's a seriously heavy and very seriously expensive Warwick/Framus Infinity/Panthera, custom shop special order only, start about 14K USD. Now you know, I think you can see the W on the bass headstock and Framus is written on the other.

Nightwish are on a whole other level as musicians, as you will see the further down the Nightwish rabbit hole you get, and oh it is so worth it. Have been a fan on and off for nearly 20yrs. Nightwish soothes my soul, I also binge listen to anything Marko does (now he's sadly left) and also Floor's solo stuff. Check out Beste Zangers with Floor, it's a Dutch tv show she did back in 2019, you'll be blown away I promise 😁

Funny thing is there is a Newfoundland song called The Islander and I though Nightwish was doing a cover of that song until I heard it for myself. Love both of them but the Nightwish version is my favorite.

Troy plays a low whistle and Marko's instrument is called "The Beast". The upper neck has a 4-string bass guitar and the lower has a 6-string electric guitar, that is Framus & Warwick Infinity / Panthera Double neck Bass and Guitar Handcrafted for Marco Hietala.
Floor steps back out of the spotlight during a lot of songs. Guitar solos, Marko singing, Troy playing the pipes, whatever it is, Floor steps back from the mic out of the spotlight, while the others have their moment. Floor is a team player. She has said on multiple occasions that Tuomas makes Nightwish run, not her.
So... Viking sings and the Valkyrie Goddess singing backup....

The second spoken part roughly translates to "If I play the chorus, you're gonna sing along, right?" - "Yeah!" - "Are you sure?" - "Yeah!" - "Ok, let's do it"
Troy is playing his Irish Low Whistle.
Marko's double neck, 'The Beast' is a custom Warwick Bass and Framus guitar combo (both brand names are owned by the same company). I think it's Piezo pickup that give the guitar neck that sound.
Marko had this piece of music left from his Tarot days, it didn't quite fit with them. I think Tuomas heard him playing it one day and thought that would make a good song. They finished the music and Tuomas wrote the lyrics, and it was included on the Dark Passion Play album, their 6th and first with Anette.
Sea Shanty is a good description. It's about a lonely Lighthouse keeper.
Some fans will joke that Marko has a t-shirt( or should get one) that says 'Floor is my backup singer'

The "no subtitle" part was Marko asking crowd "So if I will sing this song, you will sing along?", to which crowd answered yes, he asked "You will?" and then continued. Well, my Finnish has gotten tad rusty over years, too little practice lately but that was the gist.

Watching Alanna close her eyes and drift away (pun intended) filled my own eyes with tears. Music affects us all in different ways, and I gravitate towards Celtic themes more than anything. I have only been a fan myself for just over four years, so I have been able to witness the evolution of the band retrospectively. For me, the addition of Troy (Donockley) has been far more influential on the direction of the bands' music, than any other single factor. Floor makes all the difference of course, but musically, Tuomas (in my opinion) now composes songs which really seems to resonate with me at soul level. Take care you two - your English Cousin.

Troy's playing a whistle. Low whistle. he has them in various sizes and keys. In the Bogota version of Elvenjig, he takes his seat gets the Uillean set around himself ready to play, looks at his stand of whistles, then has to have someone get him the correct one. In "Please Learn The Set-list In 48 Hours" he goes to go out to the stage for the show and "I forgot me pipes!" Seems to be a theme for him (~_^)

Such a beautiful song that really show's Marko's softer side. Another great song that shows his vulnerable side and has great backing vocals from Floor is While Your Lips are Still Red, live from Wembley. There is also a music video with Annette doing the backing vocals with video clips from the Finish movies the song was written for. Wembley is better because I don't think the movie clips really reflect the meaning of the song which IMHO comes through better in the live performance. I'm ashamed to say that literally the only thing I know about Newfoundlanders is an offensive joke from the 1970s about how you break a Newfie's fingers, and I only know that because it was used to show how cultural context is vital to humour. Aanyway, this has an amazing music video which you should watch, though it doesn't have the emotional impact of the live show.
