Over a 25 year career, Stu has performed gypsy jazz guitar with symphony orchestras, presented ukulele workshops at festivals worldwide, toured internationally and recorded with Snatam Kaur on her 2018 Grammy-nominated album “Beloved”. In 2014 he was awarded a prestigious grant from the National Endowment of the Arts for his work offering healing music at cancer hospitals for patients and their families.

This was very interesting lesson for me. It’s fun to listen to melodies born from myself only by keep playing those pentatonic notes. Three things I would like to ask you. 1. Melodies are born also with normal 7notes scale(1234567) , right? Then, what is Pentatonic Scales? I can’t find suitable words to express my non-cleared feeling about the Pentatonic scales even in Japanese. Will you please explain a bit more in some coming movie the relationship between Pentatonic scale & normal 7 scale & other scales. 2. You played Dm scale. How can I apply this C major P scale pattern to other keys? 3. Please show me how you hold the picks. I find it difficult to hold without slipping. Thank you, Stu. I really enjoyed your videos.👏👏👏👏👏
I will share more about all of these in the next Livestream! In short, major is 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 - Major pentatonic is 1 2 3 5 6
Minor is 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7. Minor pentatonic is 1 2 b3 4 5 b7....leaving some notes out it create the 5 note scale...Japan has a great pentatonic scale...1 b2 4 5 b6 VERY lovely!
I really enjoy your lessons. Could you make the link with the blues in A available again. It had the BBKing box
I can't make heads or tails out of the pdf diagram beyond what I drew out with arrows as you went through the first dots on on the c-major and first one on C-minor. The rest are not intuitively apparent to me. Will you be expounding on how to read the rest of the patterns in a later lesson? I can sound out scales by ear, but nothing seems to match what you have diagrammed.

NOTE: the lines create "separate zones" or positions for each scale. Same notes, just different placements on the fretboard. The course will go though it very thoroughly :)

Long time listener here- first time caller. From Sunny Tokyo Bay on a lovely Sunday afternoon. That lesson was off the hook. I wouldn’t say I’m all there yet- but it’s coming together. And somehow what I just finished watching was- like The Who said- I can’t explain. Like a big jigsaw puzzle/connect the dots game- or being a detective hunting down the bad guy-- my musical journey has been a long and winding one. But I can see how it’s all coming together now. A fantastic intro to impro but I found myself wandering at about half way. Of course I will keep coming back to this lesson. The drone was great. It was good to learn the fingering for uke scales because ancient guitar lessons created confusion. Seems like you slide up the positions with the uke rather than stretching? (Veronica/Bonny)
Thanks Veronica - there are so many different ways to finger the skills and their positions in order to make them efficient on the hand as well as musical. To fully explore these takes some time... I feel it’s important for people to find ways of playing the skills that feel good to them… The fingering suggestions I offered are ones that are ergonomically easy… However somebody may have a finger injury that prevents them from following them. Always best to do what feels right to you. More clarification to come in future lessons!
