I met Stan the year he died. Got him to sign a couple of comics. Waited in a queue 5 hours. His minders said, “don’t talk to Stan!”
To hell with that. When my turn came, I looked at him and said, “thanks for the memories Mr Lee”. He looked up at me, smiled and winked. The 5 hour wait was worth it.

Marvel comics were my escape in the 1970s from an abusive father. I lived inside those books. I'll be forever grateful for them, for helping me get through the horror that was my childhood.

Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko stumbled into superhero comics by accident and together made them unforgettable.
There's no question that Kirby and Ditko did most of the work and that Stan Lee took most of the credit.
Its hardly surprising seeing that his uncle owned the business and thought very little of any of them.

I have been waiting for this moment for 10 years now, I knew of him before, but ten years ago, I tried to watch everything he created, all he did in his life, see how in ten years watch him go from household name to legendary status that people share their favorite cameos or perhaps only remember him for that. I couldn’t been more proud to be around for those ten years, it was a tragedy when that day happened but I’m happy to be alive when he was, and today would have been his centennial, and let’s celebrate it.
    Excelsior, true believers.

.. No Stan Lee .. No Marvel Comics .. BUT .. No Jack Kirby .. No Marvel Comics as well . Stan was credited the Creation of all these characters , Heroes & Villains alike .. .. BUT .. I feel that the Artists SHOULD have been given 50% of the credit for creating the characters as well . Whether it was Jack Kirby , Steve Ditko , John Romita , John Buscema , Gene Colan , Bill Everett , Don Heck , etc..etc . .. Not to give the Creators " Ammunition " for a reason to take Marvel Comics to Court . That is just Greed & Stupidity , they ALL signed a contract & were paid for there work , they ALL knew that Marvel would AUTOMATICALLY own ALL characters created in their Books .. Therefore : It wouldn't hurt Marvel to say : Such & Such , created by So & So ... in MY opinion ONLY ...

The reason the FF didn't wear costumes at first was because Marvel were being distributed by DC. They didn't want this subsidary cashing in on their superhero range. If you look at their first 2 issues covers, they could easily be mistaken for any of their monsters comics. So the superhero aspect of the FF is played down - hence their street clothes. By issue 3, the FF were selling so strongly Marvel could openly advertise them as traditional comic superheroes.

I never met Stan 'the Man' Lee, but that man became the soul of Marvel Comics! He placed a lot of effort into the Marvel Universe. I don't see why some fans are so sour about who should receive credit where credit is due. I love Kirby, but a man who worked for the competition can't really be called a 'Visionary' for Marvel. Stan stepped up to tell stories that he wanted to share. I'm sure he thought about the comic code authority and the chances of losing his employment. Yet, he did it. Kirby and Steve were part of the round table. Yes, but without a King Arthur, would you have had a great story?

@@emorywhitehair1341 That analogy does not remotely work. Kirby absolutely was a visionary he designed these characters he came up with so many ideas for Fantastic Four, Thor etc, and while Stan Lee isn't a complete fraud like Bob Kane is, Lee did not contribute as much to the initial idea.

It's too bad Stan got caught up in the showman/salesman act that he forgot to 1) acknowledge that comics are collaborative and 2) Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko were the heavy lifters when it came to storytelling.
