    Segun Akinola’s music through Jodie’s three series doesn’t get enough praise. I had watched a documentary, “Expedition Volcano,” the year before this episode aired, and he had done the music for that. So I was really looking forward to series 11. I think that people expected series 11 to be like series 1-10 (a space opera; galloping pace, swelling orchestral, music that told you how to feel; companions that end up being Bad Wolf, Doctor/Donna, the universe pouring through their head, the Impossible Girl). If you like the quieter moments in this episode, Grace’s funeral, the chat with the four of them afterwards … if you like Jodie’s acting on the train with Yaz, or when she reformatted Ryan’s phone (“Not any more!), you’ll enjoy this era.

  • @ta13x
    @ta13x Год назад +5

    A breath of fresh air is exactly the right description! Glad you enjoyed it 😊The amount of negativity this era gets is ridiculously out of proportion to it's faults. In terms of storylines/weaker episodes, it's on par with the rest of modern who. There was a huge backlash back in the day when Moffat and Smith took over, but it was nowhere near as vicious and long lasting as the backlash to 13s run has been. Plenty of the fanbase enjoy this era, but saying so can get you trolled like mad in the online community, so it's led to a really one sided narrative. Looking forward to seeing your reactions to the rest of the show!

    • @pmcmahon97
      @pmcmahon97 Год назад +3

      Thank you for pointing this. Matt Smith became my favorite and I know Jodi is some people's favorite too. The hate her season is wildly disproportionate to the quality of episodes to come. And, in my opinion, some of the most shocking revolations.

  • @daryl9434
    @daryl9434 Год назад +11

    I'm glad you liked it. This era is a disappointing ride at times for me. Jodie does her best. Credit to her. But the revolving / dice rolling focus on companions and 'some' of the tepid delivery is an adjustment after we've had such dynamic and high calibre performances from the last 10 series. Even if we've not always loved every aspect of each of the companions' characters the whole time.
    I've rewatched this section a number of times now. The best word is plateau. For every positive element, there's a big negative that manages to even it out to just average. There will be those that write the whole thing off as dire, which isn't objectivity true. But I can't ignore the fundamental deficiencies that seem to stem from the new show runner. A person who later admitted they had it longer than they wanted it. Because passing the baton on was very difficult. They had some absolutely fantastic ideas that were unfortunately often poorly realised, ineffectually applied, and narratively problematic. Having said that, we won't write off those gem elements that can be dug out amongst the expositional writing and box ticking exercise that plagues the approach to some of the script structures. Too often, I was just left wanting.

    • @friendlyotaku9525

      "person who later admitted they had it longer than they wanted it." @daryl9434 Год назад +1

      @Friendly Otaku In an interview, that admittedly was only reporting what they had said. The impression was given that they had the job longer than expected or wanted. This very well was due to the pandemic, I'll concede this. But also finding their replacement was probably difficult. Someone appropriately tasked in improving the perception of the show's future success as well as the reported decline in viewing figures.

    • @friendlyotaku9525
      @friendlyotaku9525 Год назад +2

      @@daryl9434 finding the replacement was difficult, this has been confirmed. "reported decline in viewing figures" Chibnall himself has debunked this and has said with tv habits changing viewing figures just don't matter in the way they used to and they never came up in his conversations with the BBC, in fact what mattered more was audience share - how much of the audience during Doctor Who's timeslot is watching the show and this aspect has continued to be strong so the BBC were very happy with the performance.

    • @daryl9434
      @daryl9434 Год назад +1

      @Friendly Otaku That's fair. That's why I used the word perception. Do you feel the level of opposition to the declining quality was at the same level in the respective years? This might very well be the case, I honestly don't know. Some of it is 🧌's, like all big franchises have been subjected to. None of the episodes deserve a 1, 2, or even a 3. I'd be hard pushed to justify a 4. These scores are simply ludicrous. A common stance I've heard in defence of this era. Is the position that it's not as bad as people say. Which is true to a great degree. I critique it because I stuck with it, then went back and rewatched it again and again, analysing what worked and what didn't, separating out my own taste from the very basics we become accustomed to, as I've done with series 1-10. I came to the conclusion that the balance of appreciable factors is noticeably deficient in some really important areas at times. Let's not fail to notice that pre showrunning. Their episodes weren't amongst some of the highest appreciated episodes. I just say it as I see it.

    Its very different from the high concept, high energy of the previous few seasons of the 12th doctor. Jodie was great, as were the companions. My problem with this era of the show is that the show runner seems to not be willing or able to follow through on things. For the next three seasons it's a fair bet that if you like a story or character and want to see more, you probably won't. The guy had some good ideas for things but he didn't seem like he knew what to do with them, unlike the previous two show runners - this stepped over the line of 'always leave them wanting more' for me. Prominent example was Ryan's dyspraxia, which got a fair amount of good press when this episode first aired but it's dropped almost immediately from the show, until it very rarely isn't. I didn't hate this period of the show's history at all, but I did notice that I wasn't quite as eager to see each new episode as in years past. There's some good stuff though - especially in Jodie's second season. 🙂

With that being said the stuff I do Enjoy the most won't be here until Series 12 which, while not "OMG one of the best", is still a great season, and ya know what, Series 13 is also pretty good, not great, but good, so can't wait until you reach that. Jodie Whittaker is a Doctor I wish I liked More, when she nails it she nails it but a good actress can only carry a role so much when it's written so inconsistently within a single episode for some stories. And the companions arent really the most interesting. I'm sorry if I sound negative but I'm just being honest with how I feel about this era without spoiling it. This era certainly has its faults, but the virulence of much of the criticism is out of all proportion to them. If people don't enjoy something, that's fine, and indeed it would be expecting a lot to think everyone should enjoy all eras of a show that's undergone many changes over many decades. However, I suspect that with time, it won't be obvious to many people what a lot of the fuss was about.
    Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed this episode, which I think is an under-rated one that mostly does a good job of doing what it needs to do. The weakest element by far is the villain, but then that's often also true for other "introductory" episodes (and isn't the main point of them). For the most part I felt this was a much-needed freshening up.

    I'm not a fan of the 13 era. I gave it a chance, but checked out halfway through the second season, for reasons I can't get into, because *spoilers*, but I'll be here for your reaction videos. That being said I thought this was an okay episode, the Doctor was still "cooking", so we don't see the full person necessarily. I didn't care for the villain, wearing teeth seemed silly to me. Grace's death was rough, and I was right there with Ryan & Graham.

    The thing that really took me out of this episode is that she fell to Earth (yes we know that the Doctor has done it before in a spacesuit backwards), but no suit, no problem WTF, It made me strongly dislike this impossible woman doctor and Almost walk away from Doctor who... Almost!!!

      Well, a Time Lord is still immune to physical harm within the first fifteen hours after a regeneration. 10 got his hand cut off, but then grew another one just fine. River got shot at repeatedly...no effect. It's possible this is the case with 13 here.

    I personally dont like most of the episodes of the Jodie Era, not Jodies fault though, i like her as the doctor. But many episodes don`t got the doctor Who feeling for me.

    I am not a fan of the whittaker/chibnall era, but im still sticking with you for the journey of course! Jodie gets some really weak material to work with and her acting choice for the doctor is just too frantic and hyper, i feel exhausted watching her hahaha

    I’d probably like this era slightly more if Ryan didn’t exist. He’s just the worst actor I’ve seen in anything for a really really long time, if not THE worst actor in Doctor who of all time. His wooden voice just makes his entire run un rewatchable for me
