- ( www.TFLcar.com ) The 2014 Toyota 4Runner is one of the last remaining old school SUV's. In other words, it still is a traditional body on frame vehicle. That means it is rigid and very strong but also heavy and thirsty. In another TFLcar first drive review Roman and Nathan test drive the newly refreshed 2014 Toyota 4Runner in Jackson Hole, Wyoming to see if an old style SUV can succeed in a brave new world.

Best suv you can buy. Jeep grand Cherokee, Ford explorer are not reliable, not good with resale. 38 Years in America and 0 problems for the 4 Runner. The style is also refreshed and has a strong stance against other suv's. Very well explained video hope for more details on your next video review.
God less the 4Runner. Not only one of the last, but the best looking SUVs out there. We have an '01 (Best body style IMHO) with 230k miles on it. These things run like hell. Hope they never stop making them. As long as they have the Highlander, they have a crossover, no reason to make the 4Runner into one.
I bought a 2014 4runner Limited and love it. This ride is sweet.
US USA did u get awd or rwd , how’s the mileage on a regular drive
about a year ow with a 2014 4runner limited and we LOVE IT. true SUV, awesome style and great cargo for a family of 5
I have a 2012 trail edition and let me tell you it's not lacking in power what so ever, i've had my 4runner for 8 months now with almost 3000km of offroading, never had a problem with power to weight ratio, the v6 has good low end torque. pulled a 4000 pound camper once and i hardly felt it(compared to my ford ranger). the build quality, in the trail edition anyways, is excellent. nicely equipped. very satisfied with my purchase
Toyota makes Great vehicles. My dad owns a 99 corrola just regular oil changes. We had to change the shocks cause they were 15 year old Toyota shocks been through 15 years of terrible Canadian winters. Currently 297 000 km or 183 000 miles.
My family has owned the following 4Runners:
1999 Limited 4Runner (totaled, rolled at 170,000 miles)
2006 SR5 4Runner (still own it, 73,000 miles)
2013 Trail 4Runner (just bought it)
These are great vehicles, and we have not had any problems with these. Routine maintenance and they last. I liked how the 1999 and our current 2006 4Runner have 2wd, fulltime 4wd, 4wd hi, and 4wd lo. But our 2013 Trail only has 2wd, 4wd hi, and 4wd lo. Great rigs that still come with a rear locker.
Still got my 1996 4runner LTD 402,654 km's and still haulin my boat and rock the 4x4
Omg
unbreakable toyota - as always
I have the Barcelona red 2014 trail edition and it is amazing!!! I love it so much!!!
You guys always do good reviews. Thanks for keeping us updated with the new cars and trucks
If people look at it as a dinosaur, then I LUV dionsaurs. BODY ON FRAME FOR LIFE BRO!
Toyota is trying to appeal to the younger buyers! Thats why they made it so aggressive looking...and I LOVE it. I'm 22. Never thought ide own a toyota as my first car but shit this thing is dope! The sr5. ..not the limited.
Still driving my 98 limited with 270,066 miles.
Still have your 4Runner?
Kyler A sure do. 306,700 on it now
Nice. unfortunately our 2002 4Runner was hit from the back and got totaled. Ironically it was hit by another Toyota. A Tacoma. At the time it had about 160,000 miles on it. It was perfect as could be until then. The thing was though the 4Runner was parked on the side of a very wide road. Obviously the person took the corner a little fast.
Toyota Venza model 2014
Happy
4runner's last forever. still have my 1998 Limited 4runner with 196,000 miles. and it runs perfectly.
I have a 06 with the air suspension. It is a dream on the beaches
I owned a 1990 4 runner limited and omg that thing would just not quit!!! but I had to part with it =/ they are amazing SUV's and I would recommend them to anyone who wants a beast of an SUV!
These are bulletproof. I have 1998 SR5, 213K on it and I can truly say I love this vehicle. Treat her properly and they will last forever. Alas, I must say that Minnesota winter road salt will someday doom my favorite ride.
Great review like always! Thanks to you both, Nathan and Roman. ;)
This truck is so boss!
4 Runner for ever. Its the only one left of its kind very useful and strong truck
Liked the fact that you guys wore TFLCar shirts..........
Here's good news to those looking for a 2014 4Runner. The 4Runner is celebrating its 30th Anniversary by giving huge discounts on all 4Runner models. It's a good thing since they don't sell that many though, and making a 30th Anniversary Edition 4Runner would cost so much to make anyway.
I have a '12 FJ and considering the new '14 4Runner. Love the FJ and don't want to give up the off road capabilities but need a true 4 door. Wish they would make a 4 door FJ similar to the Jeep Wrangler 4 door.
Actually, it is a brilliant plan by Toyota. While every one else in the segment is going to unibody chassis and independent rear suspension, Toyota decided to stick with body-on-frame with a live rear axle. The idea is that the 4Runner continuing to be built like a truck means that it has VERY FEW competitors in the market place. The only other new SUV I can think of with BOF and live rear axle is the Xterra. Yup, brilliant move by Toyota to keep the 4Runner a "real" truck.
I have a 2013 4runner and I like it a lot better. Hell, the only reason we bought it now is cuz we didn't like the design change and wanted to pick up a 13 while they were around. I absolutely love my truck. The 4Runner>>>
I currently have a Jeep Liberty, which I'm happy with, but I fantasize about this SUV all the time. I hope it stays body on frame.
The new Trail and SR5 are so aggressive looking, I love it!!!
This and the Explorer are my 2 favorite SUVs
Glad Toyota is still making these trucks. I don't care if they drink a lot of gas or if the ride sucks. You just can't beat a body on frame construction.
I'm pretty sure the latest generation of the Durango is using the same Mercedes ML chassis that the Grand Cherokee is using. In the Durango it is lengthened a few inches but it's the same chassis.
The new one looks amazing!
funny how Roman's hair touch the ceiling .... great review guys!
Big fan of the 4runner and the body on frame design, Toyota definitely needs to put at least a 6 speed transmission in it though. I hope you guys get a chance to take it on your off-road colorado trail !
good review roman & nathan we group of fans from iraq
This looks so much better than the new GX. But it looks like the front facia changes with trim? Not a fan of that catfish tested. BTW why isn't this on TFL Trucks?
Beautiful, reliable, dependable REAL SUV. Love mine 2015 Limited. Get 19.5 mpg on average.
Igor Sokolov is yours a awd or rwd
Jackson Hole isn't that far away from your base in Boulder, right? What a place for Toyota to have a press release.
Thank you for your work! Waiting for a detailed review!
Good review as always
I agree! The Toyota diesel of the 80s was awesome!
Thanks for the video, you guys look sharp your TFL shirts.
I don't get why people say all crossovers get better mileage than these body on frame SUVs. Case in point: The 4Runner has the same city AND combined ratings as the 2013 Chevy Traverse.
R.I.P. 1999 Yota but yea great trucks I own a 2002 SR5 sport edition myself and im in love with her she was a little over 145000 miles.
I've owned GM, BMW, Dodge, VW, Jeep ... I will never buy anything other than Toyota. I've had them with 200k miles with zero issues except a headlight bulb replaced once. They are worth every penny.
I like them a lot but I'm still a huge fan of the late 90's models
I like this SUV.
Very cool video.
i know this is an old video and you probably dont remember, but when you were driving did you have the seat all the way down? im looking for an suv and i have trouble with headroom is most vehicles...
After seeing what a Fed-ex guy did with an AWD Express van through multiple seasons... I'm inclined to give it a go... especially since I own an AWD Astro that powered through dense snow that was up to my knee with little problem. I'm sure I could convert an AWD Express into a mobile office as well for work on the fly.
Tried Limited version for test drive, seats for driver are to small and I'm not fat, Sport suspension felt to hard for me, room in the second row are much smaller than in highlander, ended up buying highlander. 4L V6 is to small for this vehicle, highlander with 3.5 V6 works better in acceleration, definitely needs V8. Looks good the Limited version, but needs some changes
i like how they are the same size as the 96-02 4runners my fav gen plus these lol
No, you said "Dodge durango." They said this was the last body on frame SUV. The Durango used to be one too. I assumed you commenting on that.
Test drove a 2014 limited yesterday. Coming from an FJ cruiser that shares the exact same engine, I just was not impressed. It's a good looking full size SUV IMO but for nearly 50grand still to much plastic wrapping in the inside and the engine left my wanting more. It doesn't take bumps as good as you might expect and engine noise is similar to that in my FJ, pretty loud at times. Going to go look at the JGC and Explorers now.
Eddie Walters Not anything near 50 grand you imbecile
Eddie Walters They're 42 or 44k, where did you get 50k price from? Your ass?
Jack Tran CDN dollars its over 50K. Converted to USD, ya, your low to mid 40s
Roman and Nathan, what do you guys currently drive?
I'm a TFLTRUCK subscriber. I don't c the video. Is it coming out one day this week? Don't mean sound so demanding. Thanks guys.
GM and toyota seem to be the only guys who makes body on frame SUV's that are affordable and can go offroad.
would love to see you guys bring it to do some proper off roading
I loved the old one from first look .
One of the fronts has style ques from the new 2014 subaru forester xt. Interesting to see how subaru and toyota are really combing styling.
Don't forget the Xterra, which is considerably smaller and cheaper. Also there's several full-size ones that are bigger and more expensive.
I would love to see TFLcar test out Local Motors' Rally Fighter
Great review as always guys but what's up with the use of the word proper. Makes me feel like am watching British top gear.keep up the great work.
Yeah, I have a soft spot for the 4Runners too.
Should I go and replace my 2011 version 4runner and get the 2014 or should I keep the 2011 and not get the 2014?
They used to have it like 2 gen ago, for Middle East, Latin America, Europe and Asia/Pacific Market. They suddenly stopped producing it with Diesel engines, just because they started to make a crappy Toyota Fortuner, to replace the Diesel version of the 4Runner in all the markets I mentioned before.
Why would you be able to tow more with body on frame vs. unibody if everything else is the same?
Why would you get less fuel economy for body on frame? Does it weigh more? more parasitic friction?
is that a panoramic moonroof on the limited? It looks huge
Great video!
Why is this not on the truck channel but nice vid anyway
still have my 2002 limited. had ball joint replaced and shocks and struts. that's it . runs like a new one. 207,000 miles
Love my 2010 4runner
Thanks for lowering your sear MR Driver!
when are you guys going to test it at Colorado?
Is this the first time ever that a car maker offering three different front end on one particular model ??? I personal think that it is really cool.....Just every styling for anybody ...I guess...:)
Good to see the designers of the aztek got a new job.
Not quite, the Xterra still lives and its a total beast.
LOL yeah. I mean I have a sedan.. But mom's got a 2013 Tahoe that gets 17.2 most of the time. With a full sized V8. You can't get that in some CUV
the sr5 is the base model now? wow
Still driving my 02 Sr5 best vehicle I have ever owned, just di the timing belt at 114k and she's ready to go another 100k. Only issue I have is my back bumper is starting to rust in spots.
my dads 4runner is 1990 stander 4wd love 4runner they are the best ,
fast lane car guys please explain how a body on frame makes for worse fuel economy? how does that effect fuel economy? please explain that one
Watching in 2023 - the same 4Runner as today. Dinosaurs still rule the earth👍😎!!
Don't edit please!!! Love your videos like they are now, you motivate me for the day by making me laugh!!!
if people are so worried about mpgs, why not solve to solution with a diesel engine, my good friend has a 1994 4runner with a 4 cylinder turbo diesel engine, what a great machine
Didn't the previous generation have the 4.6LV8 as an option?
Ok, if you're gonna talk about 3 different front-ends on a car, it might be useful to show them in the video! I know you have a lot editing to do, but if that didn't cross your mind as you were filming or, then I don't know what to tell you ....A better camera man?
want this so bad lol
Toyota has had more recalls than any of the American company's !
Actually, the 4Runner is rated at 22 and the Traverse at 24. By my math that's only two. Good try
The limited has the same suspension as the Offroad & SR5?
I hated the last one. but the new one made me find some love for it haha
u guys gonna test drive the 2014 highlander?
i think they should go back to clean lines like the older gens. that would make the body age well
Nathan said he had a Mazda 5 for the kids a while back.
I wish the highlander had the 4runner limiters front looks way better
Yeah, the 3.0 D4D Diesel of Toyota would be good on this.
Because they typically weigh more for the same space. Not too much the case for current models anymore though. All the unibody options are either still porkers or smaller vehicles. There is a real difference in handling though. Ladder frames and live axles are sloppy.
I got a tacoma 2013 after long time debating 4runner 2014 VS tacoma 2013
Just the headlights. They are long, thin and taper kind of like the FR-S.
this and the FJ cruiser i'd like to see compared
That being said a big SUV should obviously have a diesel engine. In the 1980`s Toyota bulid huge Landcruisers with diesel engines and 2 x 90 liter fuel tanks. They were king of Africa and many other rugged places. I guess the reason this car has a petrol engine, is it was designed primarely for the US market. Its an old model already. And hopefully if/when Toyota make a replacement, they will fit it with a proper diesel engine. Even the US market must be ready for that now.
