When I attended my first monthly grading tournament at the Kodokan when I was a boy in Japan there was a Japanese kid who threw five opponents in a row with an incredibly fast Tai Otoshi. It was amazing but he finally lost because he was too tired. The best judo I ever saw was by these young High School kids. There was not much newaza however.
All of his Tai Otoshi have him crossing above his partner's knee...................... this is apparently dangerous but clearly he is a high level judoka. If anyone could help me understand this I would be very grateful.
He's not touching the knee, he's right below it. The highest point on the shin gives better balance for tori when throwing. look up Neil Adams Tai Otoshi, he does it similarly
His gripping and kuzushi are very strong. The knee only becomes an issue, if one fails to off balance. Experts of tai otoshi prepare their entry very well, if they can’t get a good entry they change to ouchi gari, Osoto gari or something else. This is my explanation. Hope it helps.

What about the side step to offset their balance? Or is that completely done away with after a certain rank
