Very interesting video. As an engineer on the product, I would like to correct some inaccuracies: The siren wasdesigned to be IP4x splash-proof, but SAAB installed it in a 'waterfall' under the wheel-arch, so the screwed assembly was abandoned in favour of glued assembly when water ingress became a problem and it proved impossible to seal in other ways. The much-maligned non-rechargeable Lithium cells were the only technology available at the time which would operate correctly at -30'C, as specified by SAAB and most other OE vehicle manufacturers. The solder used was 60/40 SnPb, not lead-free, so cracked joints should not be a problem. The PCB was wave-soldered, but the Lithium cells had to be hand-soldered because the solder wave would have short-circuited them. The conformal coating used in the factory was Sterling 009-0051 with a fluorescent dye to aid inspection under UV light. (Now seems to have been renamed Elmotherm 009-0051.) The red jumper was termed the 'circuit activation link' and was used to prevent draining the batteries during testing and storage of the PCB and prevented nuisance sounding in the factory until just prior to insertion into the case. If anyone is interested, I do still have several NOS units, both of the type with screws and the non-screw variant that have never been glued......
Hey Steve. This is great information! I'm currently rebuilding my alarm box -- but was wondering if you knew the screw size used to seal the box. The bolts on the unit I found were quite rusty, and I don't want to re-use the same bolts to re-install. Lastly, if a new unit is being installed in a car, does it need to be paired with a Tech 2?
Do you still have the new alarm units? I am replacing or repairing one in my 2001 Saab 9-5 Aero. Also, is it plug and pay or do I need to pair the alarm unit with a Tech 2? Thank you.

This stopped the alarm so assume dead orange batteries . :) Thank you for your videos ... Will take it all out tomorrow and repair. Hopefully I will get to sleep some more tonight and it no longer goes off.. car locked with key as per you first video. Thanks again :)
Thank you very much! I ordered batteries from "Elfa", faster shipping than from china. But the batteries I ordered there was not the "Sanyo", it was another Japanese brand. I have now also repaired my alarm system (i hope)... Because the previous owner (my dad) programmed the alarm system out of the car with the Tech2 I now need to reprogram it back in. This I will do when I get a hold on my brothers Tech2. Can't wait to see if this fix actually worked :D Love your content, please make more!
Hey, glad you found the video useful :) Interesting about the batteries, can you link me to the Elfa page? If you got the correct type, you should be fine. Hopefully, I'll be finishing up the alarm retrofit in the next few days with some tech2 programming :)
I will report back if it works for me. The battery fitted, and the larm didn't go crazy when put together. Hopefully it works anyways, I don't see why it should not work?
Great videos m8 very informative . My 9 5 is a very early model , one of the first 25 off the line in 1997 . I have had problems with the alarm going off , but not for the reason you give lol. Someone in the street who visits has a Vauxhall Astra 2002 , when he arms the car alarm mine kicks off lol , then when he goes he disarms the car , mine kicks off again lol. We've stood by the cars & tested it . There was another time we went shopping & parked up by a shop with flats over it , the car alarm kicked off a few times , so i was walking back to the car when a woman walked out of the door to the flats with a remote in her hand either an alarm or a doorbell and everytime she pushed the button off went my alarm lol we stood there laughing about it for a bit then I moved the car lol & it stopped . Luckily the guy who had the Astra scrapped it & got a newer one & the problem has ceased , so i aint touching my alarm box , :-)
Wow, one of the first 25 cars? Must have been riddled with the early problems. I can think of the failing ECU electronics, early DI cassette problems and so on. Did you have many issues? Maybe your car alarm was of an early type that picked up electronic interference from the Astra? I've never heard about this issue before :D
I got it from our family mechanic , he's looked after it for 15 years his mate got it from new , everything has been sorted from recalls etc , his m8 died & i got it for cheap , i couldnt pass it up lol. the only problems are the boot button on the drivers door (right hand drive uk ) isn't working & the back drivers side rear door doesn't work on the central locking & i want a perfect car lol any ideas m8 thanks . Oh and the headlight wipers dont work lol .
Cheers! That's what I needed. My neighbours was going to kill me, and drop my car out of the ciff. You've just saved one saab with it's owner Thanks :)
Superb video. I've just replaced the ribbons on my SID and Climate Control displays. And thanks to this video, I'm quite confident I can tackle the alarm as well.

New Saab 9-5 owner here and must say that your site is most educational. I have a question. I need to repair or replace the alarm. Will a pre-2002 alarm work in my 2004? Thanks
Mycket bra video!! Ska genast testa på min. Du nämnde något om en "jumper" när allt var monterat. Det såg ut som du flyttade någon bygel el liknande. Vad är det och ska man flytta den när man lött klart?
when unsoldering it is always best to add new solder and then suck off the solder, this makes the old solder more fluid and able to be removed from the board.

Thanks, well done and very clear - camera pics/ focus excellent - UK I used Sidmaster.co.uk based in Glos. - quick and very thorough - I am getting occasional fault reporting on the SID, but Damon [Sidmaster] tells me that other alarm components need checking and if I set the alarm to 'doors only', I have not had an alarm go off - so I am waiting for that section!!!!! + going to ask my SAAB mechanic. What I like with your presentation is the understanding I glean - keep it up! Ross
Thanks, Ross! Yes, in hindsight I should have mentioned that there also can be sensors that are at fault. This is checked with the tech2 instrument, you can view the "latest alarm list" and it will tell you why there was an alarm. Important: if the siren is at fault, the nuisance alarms don't show up in the list! That is how you eliminate faulty sensors. Thanks for sharing your experience with sidmaster! :)
Very interesting but I wonder if it would be simpler just to remove my unit permanently? Car alarms mostly just annoy one's neighbours and no police ever come, so they seem of very limited deterrent use. A large and visible steering wheel lock would be more effective
Thank you for your videos. I have learned a lot. I have broken one of the four transistor in line next to the coil. Did you know the reference of the transistor? no possible to read because they painted in black. Thank you.
My SAAB is hard wired into an external case (Which i found out following this video) and consists of a Red and Black Cable being soldered to the + and - terminals of the battery part of the circuit board and 2 x AA batteries being installed in the engine bay. Is this normal as it seems much easier to change the batteries using that method, than cutting the case open every time?
Hi, thanks for your inspiring video’s. Had to think About you last night when I, and probably also my neighbours, woke up from the alarm in my Saab 93 SE from 2002. I have a question, is the alarm unit in this older version also located on the back side of the weel?
Could this stop my keys from locking then i resync back to car and they work again fully fir days then stops again none ccan help me throught fourms please can you help me.
Hi please could you help, my 9-5 salloon 40,000 miles 2005 uk,, has the dreaded key problems But not like normall so 3 saab forums say ? Main issue is it wont lock most of the time either key, i found 3 ways were i can reconect the keys to the car without tech2 but i can only seem to get the car to go into program mode but not save mode if you get me. Ie it resyncs them and the key will lock fine. The ignition is not sticking to my full knowledge because inside lighs go off and radio will turn off, i still get sound from the alarm if i get the chance to lock and set alarm. Door switches are working fine, cleaned lock ignition and keys inside good contacts, battery clipps. One thing i do think is strange is that the car can still lock even know one of the doors are not closed? But i thought they shouldent of ? Please any support or advice would be amazing as i am toatly stuck on this, this is my last chance i have. Thank you p.s love all your work keep em comeing.
The small transistors in blue labelled T1-T4, how can I find these to replace them, how do I find their specification. Has anyone a schema drawing for this PCB?
I have a question I’m going with a external battery pack but would it affect anything if I kept the batteries still in the motherboard I know the old batteries will still be poor but they wouldn’t affect the workings of the new batteries would they?
Trionic Seven thanks I ordered a water proof, box cr123a batteries and of course the cr123a connections to wire in the box. I want to install the batter box into the engine bay so when the batteries reach then end I can change them out by just opening a lid and changing them out. Wish me luck.
Very bad idea (don't know how you would fit them in anyway. Everything must be very firmly mounted in a car because of the high shock and vibration) The charge would drain from the new battery into the old and you would be back to square 1! (A lot of the charge would be wasted as well.)
You stated that the older alarm sirens can be unscrewed but you did not state up to what year. I ask because I have to do this to my and my wife's car, both are 9-5's, 2000 aero wagon and 2001 aero sedan.
Good question. As the sirens aren't made to be rebuilt, there is no official information available. I would guess that it's around 2000 or 2001. I know that the 2002 is a sealed unit for sure.
Trionic Seven so what would a dealership do, faced with a sensor-okay result through Tech2? Simply procure and replace the entire siren unit for $$$ ? As you point out, there's nothing there to be replaced. As regards the sealed (non-screw down) units, a careful Dremmel attack should the trick - no tougher than careful soldering with an equally steady hand, and re-seal with 2-component epoxy.
Can I use the wire that connects to the alarm in a test harness. I've just opened/rebuilt my alarm unit following your instructions and the SID message has gone! My thoughts regarding the connecting wire, is get one from a scrap yard and wire it to a battery to confirm the refurbishment has worked instead of taking off the wheel etc to find it hasn't worked. Just not sure of the voltages involved so would need some sort of transformer between the battery and the wire that connects to the alarm unit. Any advice is much appreciated.
Testing the siren requires sending bus messages to it, something that is difficult to simulate, unfortunately. Check my alarm retrofit video where I show how to make a temporary install of the siren in order to test it.
Hi, I have searched and searched behind both wheel arches on Saab 93 2008 absolutely no sign of alarm. can you please advise, as I urgently need to fix it.. thank you
@matt Harvey Hi again, yes you are correct. but the alarm module, the unit that holds the battery I need to locate ..the batteries need replacing and are the cause of the siren going off .. intermittently. This is supposed to be behind the passenger wheel arch. I've checked both sides but cannot locate .
Hey sir awesome channel. I’m new hear attempting to learn a little about Saab. I’m currently looking at a 2003 vector that was having issue. The owner said that it runs good just has issues with the alarm. He stated that he changed the battery and when he started it, it ran for about ten minutes then died. He has to wait about another ten to attempt to restart only to get the same results. .. really like the car and was looking for something different.. just don’t want to fail with purchase monetarily. Sir will the alarm causes these issues or some other gremlin. Thanks for your time and glad I found your tube site👍🏽
My regular mechanics are about to work on this for me. One problem we've had is that I can't find the exact capacitors you listed. Is it important to match the micro-Farad reading or can that be a different value so long as the voltage is large enough to handle the load? For example, for the C1, the closest I can find is a 16v, 14uF, or a 50 v, 10uF. For the C2, the closest I can find is 25v, 220uF. Would these work? Thanks for your efforts and thanks in advance for any guidance you can give on this question.
Hi there. I have a question: with the alarm out of the car, is there a way to test it ? Not by using the car's connector, but for example putting small voltage on the connector pins. The reason is that the batteries still produce 3V and few amps, so I'm not sure they need to be replaced.
Excellent question. No, unfortunately I don't think there is. But if you have a car with removed siren, check my retrofit video on how to connect it to the car without removing the wheel :)
My new battery measures 3.12V. The old one measures 3.06V. I read somewhere that the voltage is very critical. [In smoke detectors with a 9V battery it is similar. There is a LED that flashes very briefly every minute or so. That loads the battery. When batteries are discharged the internal resistance increases, so on no load you still get nearly the full voltage (on a meter) but put a load on it and the voltage drops.] Maybe the Saab processor does briefly put a load on occasionally and that's what makes it sound the alarm.
Hello. I have a 9.3 SAAB year 2004. My radio is dead and i am thinking of fitting an aftermarket radio have you got any video so i can get the idea. Thank you.
Sorry, the 2004 9-3 is a completely different car from the 9-5 that I know. Unfortunately, the 2003-2006 9-3 has a very strange radio with I believe is difficult to replace with aftermarket stuff.
My batteries arrived with the double tabs on the negative (-) terminal. Oops. They need to be on the (+) terminal!!! I was able to use them in a manner similar to the video. Snipped one of the tabs...installed a bit crooked.
My 9-5 from time to time will say "Key Not Accepted" even after having replaced the batteries in the remote. My car is a 2000. Remote locks still work as well. I use the workaround where you press any button on the remote while cranking the car and it works. But is there a solution to properly fix the issue?
It should synchronize after starting for the first time (possibly with the button method), but I think it should be fine then. I would try pressing the buttons 10-20 times and see if it works better.
I have a 2009 9-5 Aero that the alarm horn keeps going off, but there is no siren (or pcb batteries to fail), 2006-09 have no siren as far as i know. Anybody have any ideas?
That's a very good question. Are you really sure that you have no siren? I've read that some markets lack a siren but I'm not sure how that works. There is a possibility that you have a faulty sensor somewhere. You'll need the tech2 instrument to read off the "Last Alarm List", i.e. the reasons why the alarm went off. I think it saves the last 10 events.
Still having this problem and seems to have increased. If anybody has an idea how to trouble shoot this. There is NO Siren. only a horn honking in my 09. I have heard about a tilt or door sensor going bad, but without a Tech2 tool don't know which way or even how to start looking for the problem.
*watches the vid* yea...i'll unplug the alarm and live with clearing it till it has its MOT and go from there. Great video thou, easy to follow too if I do choose to diy it tgou
Hi buddy. Thanks for a great videos on YT! As I had the issue with alarm notification on a dash board since I've bought my latest SAAB I had finally decided to fix it. Mine alarm case doesn't come with screw, I had to cut it, but that's fine. I have only the question about the batteries - mine are still having 2.87V and 2.90V - is it already too low or are they still ok to cope with system ? They are old, 2005, I was surprised to see that voltage on them! Thanks Mikolaj
It's tricky business measuring battery voltage. You need to measure voltage under load which isn't always that easy. I'd definitely replace batteries when taking the siren apart
Very detailed video! Great information as always. I'm considering doing another car tour for my newly acquired 9-3 Aero for the channel. Would you be interested in me doing so?
The internal Sanyo batteries are for powering the alarm in case the car battery should be disconnected. Or the connector being removed. The alarm being triggered in such case.
The CR123A needs the tabs soldering on if you can't get a sanyo battery, how as you said it's not a good idea? Would this varta battery with tabs do? cpc.farnell.com/varta/cr2-3aaslf/battery-lithium-2-3aa-pcb-3v-1350mah/dp/BT03412?ost=BT03412&ddkey=http%3Aen-CPC%2FCPC_United_Kingdom%2Fsearch
That's my point you said in your video if you cannot get the sanyo batteries then the CR123A will do but every battery i've seen on online suppliers of this varta battery do not have tabs soldered on? So is the battery CR123A mentioned in your video not the right part number or is there a special version of this battery that has tabs already on it as I can't find it. Currently I've fixed a few of these alarm units but I think the supplier of the sanyo batteries will eventually dry up so i wanted to make sure I have another source...
I’m not bothered about the alarm I just want it disabled so I can use the central locking but don’t have a tech2……will need to take it to my local Saab garage…..dammit!!! 😂
@@bengtlundgren1810 If the car battery should died for some reason it's only to break into car without alarm siren triggered. It would be a very poor system.

It has been well established that the SE type can't supply the required current. Usually the batteries fail after a few months. I would re-build it.

Sorry, no. I'd recommend that you buy a new siren as it will be hard to find the right one
Bra video igen! ps . "Herman" är kung..
Kung indeed! Tack :)
Hi, thanks for your inspiring video’s. Had to think About you last night when I, and probably also my neighbours, woke up from the alarm in my Saab 93 SE from 2002. I have a question, is the alarm unit in this older version also located on the back side of the weel?
I think it is!
Could this stop my keys from locking then i resync back to car and they work again fully fir days then stops again none ccan help me throught fourms please can you help me.
Min fjärr fungerade bara ibland. Nu nästan aldrig. Väldigt tråkigt. Så jag har nog samma problem. Hjälper det som visas i videon då?

I'd remove them. You don't want to connect batteries in parallel
Great instructions! Is the car still driveable if you remove the alarm unit? Quite important in case some issues occurs during the rebuild ;)
Yes it is
You stated that the older alarm sirens can be unscrewed but you did not state up to what year.
Hi, I have searched and searched behind both wheel arches on Saab 93 2008 absolutely no sign of alarm. can you please advise, as I urgently need to fix it.. thank you
@matt Harvey Hello.. thank you for the reply.. I'm sorry i have not. i have looked behind both arches left and right on the front
@matt Harvey It is definitely somewhere because it keeps going off .. but I need to locate it, in order to fix it.
Thanks for your time and glad I found your tube site👍🏽
sounds like crank position sensor faulty.. very easy and cheap fix
Agreed with crank position sensor. Also ask in our community forum: facebook.com/groups/733705113501723/
Capacitance must match, but voltage rating can be higher. Voltage means the voltage it can survive. Be sure to buy quality caps!
Thank you very much! I'll make sure!
Hi you mention interchangeability between years. I have a 2007 9-3, do you know what years would be interchangeable with this model?
Thanks!
You could try looking up the part on a parts site like TheSaabSite.com - just compare part numbers.
I have a 2005 9-3 and no module/siren in locations you shown..!
Hi Check the rightside in the back of the trunk. I have a 9-3 08 and a 06 its playest in the trunk. on both SS and SC
Very cool. Thank you.
However thanks for answering my qustion
Hi
It's possible to disable the horn when i open and close the dors ? It's so anoying.
Thanks
Yes, with tech2.
My batteries arrived with the double tabs on the negative (-) terminal. Oops. They need to be on the (+) terminal!!! I was able to use them in a manner similar to the video. Snipped one of the tabs...installed a bit crooked.
great teacher!
Yeah where is it located? Because it's not on the driver's side under the wheel well cover like you say
Left side wheel well of the car. Driver's side is for left hand drive :)
great detailed work
Thanks
Great video, thank you.
Thank you!
Trionic Seven This issue has been ongoing since the beginning of April. Sometimes it won't happen at all.
Sounds like it might be that your key or the chip in the lock is going bad. I'd look at it before it throws in the towel altogether.
Trionic Seven May be the lock, as both keys do it. Is this an easy fix?
Honestly, no idea. I'd ask on one of the Saab forums for guidance.
I think it saves the last 10 events.
yes took the wheel off etc and no siren plus it only honks the horn and flashes the yellow lights when it alarms.
Still having this problem and seems to have increased. If anybody has an idea how to trouble shoot this. There is NO Siren. only a horn honking in my 09. I have heard about a tilt or door sensor going bad, but without a Tech2 tool don't know which way or even how to start looking for the problem.
Hotglue works just fine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well done! thanks
Hi buddy. Thanks for a great videos on YT!
As I had the issue with alarm notification on a dash board since I've bought my latest SAAB I had finally decided to fix it.
Mine alarm case doesn't come with screw, I had to cut it, but that's fine. I have only the question about the batteries - mine
are still having 2.87V and 2.90V - is it already too low or are they still ok to cope with system ? They are old, 2005, I was surprised
to see that voltage on them!
Thanks
Mikolaj
It's tricky business measuring battery voltage. You need to measure voltage under load which isn't always that easy. I'd definitely replace batteries when taking the siren apart
good content !
Thanks!
Good job!
Thanks
great job my 2007 is sealed o I am looking for older one
You can use the dremel, but if you're lucky (like me) you can score an older siren from a salvaged car :)
Very detailed video! Great information as always. I'm considering doing another car tour for my newly acquired 9-3 Aero for the channel. Would you be interested in me doing so?
James, nice hearing from you! 9-3 Aero you say? Of course, that would be awesome! :)
Why have battery?
The internal Sanyo batteries are for powering the alarm in case the car battery should be disconnected. Or the connector being removed. The alarm being triggered in such case.
The CR123A needs the tabs soldering on if you can't get a sanyo battery, how as you said it's not a good idea? Would this varta battery with tabs do? cpc.farnell.com/varta/cr2-3aaslf/battery-lithium-2-3aa-pcb-3v-1350mah/dp/BT03412?ost=BT03412&ddkey=http%3Aen-CPC%2FCPC_United_Kingdom%2Fsearch
That's not even the correct battery type, won't work.

Thanks, I didn't know this. I speculated from my knowledge of home electronics :)
I’m not bothered about the alarm I just want it disabled so I can use the central locking but don’t have a tech2……will need to take it to my local Saab garage…..dammit!!! 😂
Too much work, just disconnect it people, I did on my 9-3!
Very sad system i can tell
Why?

@@bengtlundgren1810 If the car battery should died for some reason it's only to break into car without alarm siren triggered. It would be a very poor system.
