    It is worth mentioning that the Nationals have one very good pitcher, one good pitcher, one decent pitcher, and two God-awful pitchers. Then they have exactly three good relievers, with everyone else in their pen being a flaming shit-storm. So sometimes people are shocked when teams destroy the Nats one day and get shut out the next, but it can really just be as simple as running into them on the day Gray is pitching, and the pen is fresh.

  • @kyleochoa9004
    @kyleochoa9004 Год назад +4

    I don't know WHY it works this way, but if you look at the most under-preforming teams in baseball (Mets, Padres) against the most successful teams (Braves, Rays, Orioles, D-backs) and the big surprise teams like the Reds and Marlins there's a pattern. Good teams are built organically maybe adding a free agent signing or trade to fill a hole every now and then. Teams that just try to sign every expensive free agent or get every big trade piece end up being bad. It even holds if you look back at the Dodgers and Astros success or the Angels constant failure. You have to build up a team that can play their roles and win together, then if you need a first baseman or a left fielder you can add those guys to the winning team and culture and they will click in. You can't just buy a team. I promise the Rays vs NL All-stars or Braves vs AL All-stars the all star teams would lose 8 out of 10 because they are great players but not a great team.

    Here's the problem - it's almost July, and this team is still finding ways to underperform expectations. At what point do we start talking about how to fix these offensive problems rather than when do they find the time to get hot? It's infuriating to watch this team, even being a non-fan, and there's a clear lack of accountability in the front office as to who catches the blame.

    1. A relatively talentless NBA team sometimes plays poorly for a better upcoming draft slot, but upps the Padres are already supposedly “loaded with superstar talent”, so they aren’t biding their time till the Team drafts better players.
    2. Sometimes a team wins a championship and the next season they are emotionally drained and underperform due to not being as hungry. Can someone tell the Pads that they didn’t win the Pennant or the World Series last season. They performed well in two 2022 playoff rounds and then were outmatched.
    Result this 2023 season:
    The Padres aren’t that talented.
    They have bloated salaries.
    They don’t play inspirational baseball.
    Each player doesn’t seem to hold himself highly accountable to bring about team success. Meaning they look over their shoulder for the next guy to get the job done, instead of getting it done themselves.

However, they need to start putting in more performance parts to these contracts. Listen, I’m a Mets fan, with the richest owner and I can’t stand some of the contracts we have. 43 million dollars to pitch every 5 days and only pitch 5 or 6 innings? Pull a lot muscle and go on the IL and miss three starts, tightness in your shoulder, miss two starts. I get it, huge wear and tear on the arms but if you can’t make 30 starts then what’s the point? Even some position players (around the league) $30-$35 million and have an off year, then a good year, turf toe miss time, bat 235…it’s just unreal.

    • @Massachamp08
      @Massachamp08 Год назад +1

      @seen48 Fr. What's crazy is that we all harp on teams like the A's and Rays for being cheap, but when you look at it, they're spending more than ever now. The 1992 Mets, the worst team money can buy, had the biggest payroll in baseball history up to that point at $45M, yet the lowest payroll today is the A's at close to $60M. When you really look at it, even the shittiest bench player is in the 1% nowadays and making a killing. Too bad MLB will probably never get a salary cap or floor, I mean even the NBA's recent CBA negotiations managed to include a hard salary cap with its 2nd apron for the luxury tax. No reason MLB shouldn't be doing the same.

    I remember in the off-season I told multiple Padres fans what is actually happening right now. It's actually hilarious that obvious casual fans or just plain oblivious fans were arguing that they were world series bound already. As a Mariners fan, I know how that goes. I told them the pitching looked good and their hitting needed adjusted with some trades. They moved multiple players around in the field and I knew they needed to trade one of their middle infielders and of course, I was right. Now Kim and Cronenworth won't ever have the same trade value they had before the season. They could have improved in other areas but the fans ate it up and the front office felt content with the fan approval. Us Mariner fans know about this all too well.

When he signed I talked about how it'd be smart to trade one of the up-the-middle, promising guys in Kim, Cronenworth, or Grisham for a proven more consistent outfielder to fill in at the beginning for Tatis and when Tatis came back, they could send down a weak link. Gurriel would have been very obtainable in a reasonable package, amongst others. I figured one of Carpenter or Cruz would regress quite a bit. None of those fans wanted to listen and thought I was an idiot. I actually thought Kelenic needed a change and would hit like an allstar somewhere else and liked a trade idea with the Padres. I didn't realize Kelenic made that change over the off-season and he's broken out like I knew he could.

    While clearly the players need to step the F up, lots of the struggles as whole are a result from poor roster construction and depth as an organization by AJ Preller. They was glaring holes that needed to be filled this offseason in the DH, 1B, OF and catcher positions and what does Preller do?!? Spends $280M on “the best remaining free agent” who happens to be a SS (Xander Bogaerts.) a position that had plenty of depth on the roster. This isn’t a jab at Xander but that was a massive overpay for a position that didn’t need to be filled, imagine how that money spent could of been distributed to fill the actual holes that needed to be filled, another massive fail by Preller.
