The original Shox were masterpieces. It was the most durable and comfortable shoes I’ve ever had, specially the R4 model. They released them recently but with bad materials, and it wasn’t comfortable at all. Even the shox columns were made out of different materials. I had both and I compared. Great video!
Totally disagree, I owned 4 pair 3 basketball and one runner, the basketball shoes each had the column snaps because someone stepped on the back of the shoe and the shock would snap, for the runner it failed after 2 year
i had a pair of shox back in the day that had a heel and forfoot unit and i loved them because i got them super cheap at footlocker. Great video God bless you and yours! praying for all of you!
I yelled “yes” in my car (by myself) when I saw the thumbnail. Probably my favorite video you’ve ever produced. As a long-time shoe geek, I loved the hype around the Shox, and the Shox VC 1 is an all-time top 5 performance basketball shoe. Great video. Thanks for all the content!
I’ve bought Shox BB retro as well for the same reason , my friends all called it “spring shoes” in our teenage , not none of us own one in the past days
if you wanna see how a shoe using actual springs is, look at "Z-Coil" shoes. They're supposed to be a comfort above all else type of thing, and they kind of look like Keens with a coil sprung heel.
I have a pair. Bought them out of curiosity but wouldn’t be caught dead with them outside cause they look like high heels. Anyways, they feel weird and springy but the heel catches on everything and you can’t safely drive with them. I have no idea what use they would be good for but I kept them as a conversation piece collectible.
@@PixelBlenders the only actual users I know of are nurses and hairstylists. Used to see tons of them use the Z-Coil ones to help with foot pain from being on their feet all day and they definitely seemed to like them.
@@adamthrasher5605 They actually might be ideal for standing with minimal movements but there are far better max cushioning sneakers that blow the socks off of those older spring technology shoes. I had the first year Vince Carter shox in black/red colorway. I wore them once, wrapped them & stored them for a decade. I finally broke down and started wearing them, after about a month of daily casual wear the sole came completely unglued. I still miss those shoes. I liked them more than my Jordan 5's
I gotta say one thing about these. The last year we had Shox for basketball was my Freshman year. High tops with Shox that go from the back all the way to the front. I still have them to this day. I actually wore them to the gym a few weeks ago just for the heck of it. Can't believe they actually lasted through so much play.
I remember school clothes shopping in 2000 and I begged my mom to buy Nike Shox for me because they seemed so cool but was told it was too expensive for the budget I was allotted and ended up getting a pair of Reebok DMX Pump Fury in silver and blue. In the end, I realized Reebok’s Pump and Nike’s Shox technology are both seen as a fail in retrospect.
I had a pair of these when I was in the army in the early 2000's. They weren't very durable was the main problem. I ran around 5 miles a day at least 4 day a week, and the shocks were bottoming out within a month. Basically they were a waste of money.
I have shox I bought in college with a Nike ID custom design and I kept them because the style was cool. 10+ years and ankle surgery and nerve damage to my foot later, they are one of the few pairs of shoes I kept. I can't speak to athletic edge, but the foot support is major. I actually had pain relief during rehab. Nostalgia saved me 😆
I loved my Nike shoxs, I didn’t see anything wrong with them for daily wear. But they are nothing compared to the 2017 Nike air max. Which are getting very hard to find.
I cant beleive you just mentioned my kicks! 😊 I got the white & grey joints on right now! & I got the white black & yellow ones but one shoe popped...😢 I absolutely loove them! @@Billy11179 lol that’s why I bought them like they where going out of style a few years ago. Was picking them up for around 120 a pair. I think I’m down to 5-6 still waiting in the box.
Don’t feel bad Evan, Nikes are marketed to kids trying to look cool. That’s 90% of their business. It’s like SUVs. 98% of people who buy an SUV will never take it off the pavement. They could get the same utility out of the van, but they want to look cool so they get an SUV instead.
I use to rec my ankle wearing these at PE. My dad got me a pair when he went to New York, I love them so much as they were not available in the UK at the time. I think I still have them same were. Respect to the Tec that went into them.
The problem is air is just a better spring material. It's a very progressive spring which means you get a softer shoe at low compression, ie walking, whilst still getting a hard spring at high compression when you need the performance. Indeed that's precisely why it's used in a lot of highly engineered applications like motorsports. They will mix in regular steel springs to balance the springs progression whereas shoes use foam for that, but then combine the very lightweight and cheap nature of that construction and it's an easy choice. As a side note, I know the channel's stance is that air does nothing but having had the air pocket blow out I can say with confidence there's a substantial difference between when there was air and post-burst. Still is a huge difference to this day comparing my two pairs. Given the air is punctured as part of the testing it would probably be wise to test both before and after the air is gone, perhaps piercing the bubble with a knife to ensure there's a large enough outlet to properly compare.
There’s something to be said about how as a kid you wondered what was inside shoes and now you get to do it as a job, congrats fr it’s great that you get to do what you love and that it’s something we’re all interested in
You could probably use a progressive spring for your custom ones - super hard to bottom out but a good amount of initial squish, for maximum performance and comfort. (If such things are actually doable with this shoe design!)
Some (probably even most) of the retros/re-releases now actually have take down tech compared to how they were originally released since they’re meant more for lifestyle now than performance. Also makes it cheaper for them to produce. Curious to know how the original models actually look inside
Always wanted to know what was in those. Disappointed but not surprised to see JUST MORE FOME. had some, as a decent track and field athlete, but the sideways instability put paid to using them for anything but posing. Keep the visa coming - absolutely loving the take-downs of sneaker tech!👍

Nacho Average Finds is a great channel and Brian and Nacho are awesome dudes so it was great to see you do a shout out. I remember owning a pair of these in like 07 or 08 and I have no idea how anyone would play sports in these, the traction is way too strong for outdoor basketball on the sole to the point that I almost twisted my ankles several times when I used them to play. They also just seemed super stiff and bulky, I do admit they look cool but after owning one pair I think I'm good for the rest of my life not to own another. Great video as always!
The new Nike GT Jumps are how they intended to make the Shox (according to Weartesters). Really springy. They're easily available retail and full of tech, maybe cut some of those up soon.
i have bad feet and i swear by these shoes.very narrow and excelent arch support.great video i was always wondering this for years since i wear them so much.
I always knew it was just foam, even back then. It was supposed to be "Air infused" foam. When I first heard that I thought, well, that's all types of foam. 🤣
They got one alterations called Air SHOX which basically mean having an air unit surround the SHOX, I was told that was the ideal setup for SHOX. I assume becuz they make the SHOX softer whereas the Air unit with higher PSI which kinda allow the SHOX to expend a little without any over compression.
I literally spilt out water at that Nickelback for some reason. Drinking while watching your generally no surprise but great nonetheless video was a bad idea lol. You got me there 😂😂😂.
I kept mine from high school, until recently. About a year ago I decided I would wear them again as they still looked new. Unfortunately, the socks and the wedge part of it disintegrated into a powder after only wearing them for a day. That’s when i decided it was time to throw them out despite all the good memories I made when the them.☹️
My boss hates that these shoes are so hard to find now. They are the best shoes we have found to recommend to our patients with to much pronation. They are great when you place an orthotic in them.
@@michaellk2254 barefoot shoes are horrible for people with foot deformities. This is not a one size fits all. That would be like putting racing slicks on a tow truck, wrong application.
I loved Shox but I found thesse awfu as kept turning my ankle in them. Probably just me but the earlier versions felt much more stable. I think the earlier ones had a wider footbed in the front to give more stability.
I had some og full sole shox and I now have a mint retro pair. The og shox were def more springy and varied in springness in different parts of the shoe than the retros but the retros still give a good springy feel. Especially after wearing them a few times.they are a shoe that you could walk or stand in for long periods no doubt. More so than air max shoes. I wore the hell out of the couple og ones I had back when they were made.
Love all your videos rose anvil. Do you think it would be fun to do a Nike air trainer 1 video? Nike seems to be trying to bring those back hard with so many releases
There was a shoe with real springs in it.I think the brand is called APL, and they worked so good that the NBA had to ban them.Would love to see you dissect that shoe, but then again they cost around the same amount as yeezy on resell.
There are numerous variations in the Shox models. Some have air in the forefoot and some have Shox in the forefoot. The basketball models have even stiffer Shox columns.
I love shox bc they make you taller discreetly and they have a bounce when you run . I’m not a runner btw but I run heel toe and when i run I like to feel that bounce .
Maybe if Nike could redesign the Nike Shox into a more minimalistic style, I think it can be a great hit! I had a pair when I was a kid, and I wore them until the last step they were able to give, love these shoes! Great video, all the Nike Shox fans, we can die in peace now...
Man I remember having one of this in early 2000 and wore them daily and threw them away because were beat up and now I feel bad that I didn’t kept them. I been looking lately for that specific model and color scheme but I can’t find them anywhere I even went to my local Nike town and they gave me the actual model number but still no luck on finding it. sad 😞
The heels always wore out too fast; they needed thicker heels for what they were charging for them. But they were very comfortable and were always my favorites Nike shoe.
I think what gets lost in translation is WHEN these were created. What I mean by that is this, when these were created it wasn't about so much the benefits as an athlete it was more about lessening the "I just got off work/from the gym and my joints hurt" situation. Fast forward and most companies have found that Foam is the best way to do that when you don't have an "AIR" patent. Shoes back then were very very very hard, sole wise.
I would love to see you take apart some soccer boots and evaluate their durability, there are many models that cost about 200€ and some seem to be pretty ez to destroy..
I feel like the bounce plate technologies of today kind of achieve what Shox WANTED to happen but yes, I remember being incredibly disappointed in every pair of these I ever got. Your explanation was on point, well done.
Those were my favorite Nikes ever. They had those in that lab thing, or whatever they called it, where you could choose the color for every part. I paid over 200 for them but it was by far the best shoes I ever heard. I wore them every day and they lasted like 5 years. They held up better by far than any other Nike shoes I've had and I only buy Nike. I sluice love another pair of them. One of the best looking shoes they ever made too.
I had a different version in high school that I played basketball in for a few seasons. They were my favorite I ever played in, but I think it had more to do with the traction, how they fit my foot shape well and the comfort of the upper. I tried hooping in them last year (15+ years later) and the #shockpoppedoff though.
u should do a comparison on some OG vs retro’d shoes-I think shox moved to Nike sportswear so it might not have a lot of tech in it anymore to save costs. If u look at an ‘01 model might be different
Nike stole this shoe design from my father. He walked into Nike office in chicago and didn’t have a patient on his design. MARK STEVEN CRUTCHER Sr. , my father, changed shoe history forever and will never get credit. He is defeated and embarrassed everytime I bring it up. He created the design before I was born and I saw the drawings in the early 90’s. I’m going to expose it all and restore my father’s name. My father came up with this idea after losing a 5 on 5 and being clowned. He went home and took the springs out of the mattress, took apart his sneakers and taped the springs to his shoes. When my father explained the show to Nike, it was supposed to have real springs in it. Nike took stole the design and didn’t even perfect what my father MARK STEVEN CRUTCHER SR. of Chicago, Illinois Invented. It was only supposed to make athletes jump higher as he did after installing the springs. Thank you for your video.
Ooo sweet! I kept meaning to suggest doing a video on Shox. I have 2 pairs that I designed myself in the early 2000's. Still have them both. The original pair squeaks now (have been after a few years of wearing them but I did wear them ALL the time) but the second pair is still pretty much in the same condition as when I got them albeit a little discoloring. But I am thinking one of the shocks became unglued at some point... I really thought they had some type of spring...how sad.

All it is is an air unit with a foam pillar inside.
The Air Shox aren't really Shox at all.
Sounds like they should just wear barefoot shoes and go from there so they didn't need nikes or orthodics
@@michaellk2254 barefoot shoes are horrible for people with foot deformities. This is not a one size fits all. That would be like putting racing slicks on a tow truck, wrong application.
And its some R4s too. That hurts. Always remember those being kind of heavy but i loved them. Had so many pairs.
I loved Shox but I found thesse awfu as kept turning my ankle in them. Probably just me but the earlier versions felt much more stable. I think the earlier ones had a wider footbed in the front to give more stability.
check ebay, i bought a 2002, Griffey Shox last year, they still feel pretty nice. Im not going to play in them, but the styling is so much better.
Can't wait if you really produce those titanium spring shoes! Would be dope!
Would love to see a video on Rover Boots- been seeing a lot of push for them and want to know the Rose Anvil thoughts!
6:03 24 hours of lemons in a roseanvil vid? siiiick; yesss
great video mate! my dad has a pair, and ive always wanted to know whats in them!
Hey Rose Anvil, could give ratings on cutting the tongue how you give ratings for cutting the back heel of the shoe? I think it would be a good add.
Man the R4 OG 2000-2001 black and comet red pair were my favourite shoe to this day. Impossible to beat in my opinion. I wish Nike re released them 😢
Love all your videos rose anvil. Do you think it would be fun to do a Nike air trainer 1 video? Nike seems to be trying to bring those back hard with so many releases
Underrated RUclipsr! Great content
Great video as always. This channel is top shelf
So much nostalgia!!! Please do some more skate shoes!! So many brands claiming 'impact protection' but I suspect its mostly subjective
Please do Nike Overbreaks! I want to know what's actually under that crazy midsole and why they're so damn comfortable!
I bought those back in 2000. I appreciate the video
Love your videos don't miss a single one
You really found your audience, I commend you sir. This channel will be at 1m subs in 6 months, keep at it.
I used to have one of those when I was a kid. I remember being disappointed because the shocks didn’t feel different from your normal rubber shoes
Here after Kendrick performed in these 😂
I love shox bc they make you taller discreetly and they have a bounce when you run .
Thank you, for doing this video I loved the show when they were out I was surprised by how hollow they were.
love your channel! keep doing what you do
Man I remember having one of this in early 2000 and wore them daily and threw them away because were beat up and now I feel bad that I didn’t kept them. I been looking lately for that specific model and color scheme but I can’t find them anywhere I even went to my local Nike town and they gave me the actual model number but still no luck on finding it. sad 😞
I had I pair 10 years ago in elementary school and I loved them
The heels always wore out too fast; they needed thicker heels for what they were charging for them.
Props for shouting or nacho they make some good content 🙌
Shox are my favorite line of Nike. I'm sad to see them go away again
I would love to see you take apart some soccer boots and evaluate their durability, there are many models that cost about 200€ and some seem to be pretty ez to destroy..
Nice shout out to nacho, they make some great videos and good deserve the subs/views
I feel like the bounce plate technologies of today kind of achieve what Shox WANTED to happen but yes, I remember being incredibly disappointed in every pair of these I ever got. Your explanation was on point, well done.
That dunk was nice, but KG came millimeters away from being killed by Carter's fist lol
Can you do a joke video and break down those tiny keychain shoes, I know vans has a bunch of them
Those were my favorite Nikes ever.
I tried hooping in them last year (15+ years later) and the #shockpoppedoff though.
i just had them to wear to school :D
so 3 years of highschool and 3 different pairs each year
now my foot is big for them
I loved these growing up. Comfortable and beautiful.
u should do a comparison on some OG vs retro’d shoes-I think shox moved to Nike sportswear so it might not have a lot of tech in it anymore to save costs. If u look at an ‘01 model might be different
I grew up with the Air concept. The capsule of urethane, I used to draw it and try to sketch a new design..
I remember wanting a pair of the Shox that had the springs for the entire sole. Never did get a pair.
me too, finaly got them two years ago, they're very disapointing, you dont feel the collums in the front that much and they roll clunky on the ground.
Thank you for your video.
i think a vid on the Asics gel would be interesting
There was a more casual version made called Shox Gravity. They had straight columns without ribs and felt a lot more "squishy"
I would really like to see whats the difference between nike foam (reacts, zoom, air, etc) and also I really like your video!
A review on the New Balance Numeric 1010?? I’ve heard tons of great things about its durability. I’d love to hear your take.
