  • Thinking you need a starter, battery, or alternator for your Jeep Cherokee or other vehicle? You need to check the conditions of your ground connections first. So many start and run problems come from this area. It should be done before swapping parts, and probably as part of a twice/yearly maintenance regime.

    Had the same issue with a Jeep Grand Cherokee my twin brother helped me get. Being a cancer survivor on a seriously limited budget this video saved me a lot of money I didn’t have to spend. Cleaned up my grounds and problem solved. Thank you so very much for sharing this information. Truly a life saver. A lesson I will never forget and will definitely share. God Bless! Thank you again!

    The video is informative and well done. The only downside is that you've made me feel really bad about what I previously thought was a "clean" engine bay.

    Thanks for the great information on the importance of good ground connections. Our 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee would not start and we were told the battery cables needed to be replaced. After watching the video, I was reminded of a similar ground clean up project I did on my 87 VW Vanagon. That effort helped improve its idling and performance, and it made sense to do the same thing on the Jeep. One of the two smaller cables from the negative battery terminal had the most corrosion. I cleaned it up along with the other grounds on the engine and both sides of the engine compartment. It started up right away, and continued to start quickly on several attempts today. Thanks again.

    Thank you!!! I had a 99 Cherokee with no crank, it would jump. I replaced the battery, it ran for a week. Then I replaced the connectors, and it ran for a week. I just cleaned up all the grounds as per your video, it cranked up like when I first got it! Thank you!

    My 93 Grand Cherokee was having problems starting. I'd turn the key, and it would crank, but it wouldn't turn over. On the second or third time, it would turn over and run just fine. I read all sorts of stuff, and when I described the problem to some AutoZone guys, they said that my starter might be getting ready to go out. Crap... So I found your video, thank God. I cleaned up the battery terminals/connectors real good, then lifted the battery out and cleaned up the grounds to the left of the battery. I pulled the bolt, scrubbed that real good, and scrubbed all three or four of the connectors, too. I got everything real shiny and put it all back together, put the battery back in and tightened the terminals real good, and now, that thing just fires up like it's brand new! Thank you soooo much!!

      I've got a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee and took it to the dealer. They replaced the SCRIM unit that recognizes my keys.
      I am about to take it back. I'm a student and don't have the time at the moment to figure out where 2 of my grounds are on the jeep.
      I've located about 3 of them.
      I'm gonna ask the dealer if they can clean the ground connections and maybe replace the battery connectors that are starting to oxidize. My gauges all drop to 0 but indicator lights all come on and OBD 2 scanner shows no error codes.
      Either failing ECU, TPIM or bad ground and with the indicator lights coming on with no error codes, I'm guessing bad ground connections. Battery is only a year old.

      When you would crank it it never drained the battery completely ? Mine will crank for a little bit but not turn over. And after the battery on the jumper is completely dead

    Thank you for this video. My 98 xj wouldn't start one morning. I watched too many videos that pointed to the crank sensor. Only spent $ on the sensor and it didn't work then came across your video. Luckily before buying other unnecessary parts.
    Did what you said, and boom it started right up. It also fixed other things. Thx again.

    Grounds are very important. I had a starting problem that was intermittent. As I was writing this you said this goes back to the70's and you reminded me of my 63 Savoy that had a fast left turn signal. It was fixed by cleaning the ground. Back to my starting problem. I replaced my battery and in doing I cleaned up the grounds and fixed my problem for about a month then the car stopped cranking all together. I found that I had power to the starter so I got a new starter and when I went to replace it I found a loose ground that was attached to the starter. I tighten that up and returned the starter and I was back in business. Good video. Happy Motoring.

    Everyone listen up! Cannot stress enough how correct this man is! I absolutely have known the importance of grounds since I was a teenager as I started working on old Volkswagens. And everyone always said they have electrical issues when really if all the grounds are good they have no more electrical issues than other cars. Actually my Jeep's had more electrical issues than all of my VW's & most of them ground related. Also, learn how your relays ground out, and how to use a jumper wire- you'll thank me later when you jump your starter relay or get your AC working in middle of summer- or get paid for fixing your friends car!

    Great job, thank you. I noticed the battery negative has this issue regularly but did not think of the others. I bet that is where my rough idle and slow start are coming from on my 95 Cherokee. Three mechanics and replaced all kinds of components and not one of them suggested this.

    Jordan, I had a clicking problem with my 98 jeep when starting and looked on youtube for troubleshooting. Saw this and checked grounds and found the problem, thanks. Cleared it and it starts perfect now. You see that disconnect you have on your ground post. Well, that was the problem. it was corroded inside. Wire brush cleaned it, put electr-greese on threads and reinstalled it and now it start every time.

    • @sonofmaniam
      @sonofmaniam  8 лет назад +1

      Very good! The clicking is almost always a sure sign that sufficient voltage is not being maintained at the starter solenoid (like a relay, it is "held" closed (on) by sufficient voltage being available). Glad you found it quickly. Failure to achieve and maintain proper voltage at the solenoid is almost always going to be due to a weak battery, bad connection, or both.

    Thanks man! I brought my car through the car wash and got an undercarriage wash. Brought it home and the next day I was having all sorts of issues - alarm went off when I hit unlock on the key fab, all gauges read zero, and most importantly, when I started the car it died immediately. I had a hunch it was related to the undercarriage wash and noticed the ground terminal on the engine block was FILTHY. Got some cleaning supplies from the hardware store, gave it a solid scrubbing, and sure enough it fired right up! Your video saved me unknown amounts of pain dealing with mechanics. (Anyone else having similar problems - I thought maybe the ECU/PCM got wet so I also unhooked it and let it dry out on a hot day. It didn't look like any water got in there though.)

    Great info! After days of troubleshooting why my right turn signal would light but not flash and cleaning up the NEGATIVE GROUND points, I found the actual issue was simply corrosion on the POSITIVE cable connection at the battery post and clamp! A quick scrubbing with a battery post wire brush and instantly all lights lit up like a Christmas tree! This vid is the best advice for fixing any elec probs Much appreciated! 👍👍

Changed out the crankshaft position sensor, other sensors, relays, etc...no luck. I changed out the grubby looking ground strap right next to the neg terminal of the battery, and it fired right up. • @sonofmaniam
      @sonofmaniam  8 лет назад +4

      You can imagine how easy it would have been to jostle that connection while replacing one of those other components, leaving you with the false impression that the component was the culprit. When really it was just the connection. A lot of starters and alternators get bought, swapped, and even credited for the fix, when it could have just been the disconnecting/reconnecting of cables/wires during the job that got things going again. Thanks for sharing!

      You're welcome. Whenever more than one electrical component in the vehicle starts acting weird at the same time, ground connections are a likely suspect. While it would be rare for two components to fail at the same time, ground connections often provide ground for multiple (and sometimes unrelated) components.

    Great video. I'm doing all this. But I still have one pulley to change beside my alternator and but I'm have issues with my heater to clicking and windows. I went ahead and changed my alternator because the person before me had an amp hooked up. Now I gotta figure out what he has done to get power to the amp. My back taillight don't work. It cranks every time but was stalling until I bought an alternator. But it's at 204,000 miles. I recommend an alternator replacement around that time anyways . Jordan Moore I have a 2006 jeep liberty. It has a p0340 code ."cam sensor intermittent. These cars are famous for their cam and crank sensor issues .and they are cheap enough. So I replaced them .with original mopar .unfortunately I'm still getting that code. The car will start right up 99 percent of the time .and run ok at least for a few minutes. Then the idle will dip down the the 650 rpm range and the idle gets a bit lumpy..i checked my 5v reference ,signal voltage .but when I got to the ground. The reading seems to be all over the place. I did clean some grounds no all . It's freezing outside now so I'll have to wait for a half decent day. Anyway I want to thank you for your video. It has given me some hope.

    i just bought a jeep 2005 cherokee sport with a no start issue , your video was very helpful and got me a bit further along to getting it started, I thought it may be the starter motor at first , but after pokeing around with a grounded lead i found the ecu had a bad earth tightened the nuts on it and that fixed the fuel gauge showing no fuel and also gave me some diagnostistics from the scan tool that was showing no codes prior to fixing that ground , while its not as yet running as for some reason theres no ground on the side of the start relay which from what i can understand from the service manual goes back to the ecu which perhaps is faulty , i have bypassed the start relay to turn it over and the starter works but its not firing up so im assuming its not getting injector pulses or fuel, one code on the scan tool says P1263 which i believe is the number 2 glow plug but that does not explain why the ground side of the start relay has no ground, still trying to figure it out but maybe you have seen this before also .. thanks for the great video.

      Try running a hot wire from the battery to the fuel injector fuse. I bought a 2000 Grand Cherokee Laredo that didn't run. The pcu ecu pcm computer was bad. I was able to drive it around for months by running a hot lead to the fuse at the fuel injector. I've since purchased a computer from a company on eBay that flashes them based on the VIN number. 180$ and it was fixed dealer wanted 1500$ . I was able to drive it with the hot jump wire for months until I found the computer flashing company. Just look on eBay. Don't try using a used computer won't work has to be flashed to the VIN number of the Jeep.

    You just saved me a lot of $ on my 2003 Grand Cherokee. If I'd listened to the kid at the parts counter and started throwing parts at my ride, I would have been out the cash and the car still wouldn't run. On my '88, the battery cable had worked its way loose on the stud where it bolts to the starter. And there was a lock washer, too! A rather flimsy one at that. The solenoid would click when the key was turned, but the starter wouldn't crank. I put on two stout lock washers and found a nut that pretty much threads over the entire length of the stud. Tightened it down, problem solved.

    Don't forget to change all the fuses, they get corrosion in inside the plastic and you get a voltage drop. I did that and cleaned the grounds on a 19 year old cherokee and everything works like new.

    After you clean your grounds, do yourself a favor and by some conformal coating spray or urethane spray and coat it heavily so that it is permanently protected from weather/water/corrosion. One and done. I am starting to do that myself this weekend.

    I have found that the ground strap is screwed to a painted surface and if you have a look at your grounds they are technically too small for what the maximum potential current could be, like headlights, accessories heated seats. The bolt used ( I have a 2011KK) looks perfect but being brass has oxidation. The fact that you even have to chase this up means it is a design fault. The annoying thing also is the way the car shuts down as you alluded to there is a second bus from the Cans bus which allows the modules to wake up for all sorts of reason and the master on the bus waits for chatter to become quiet before issuing a sleep command. What should happen is after a timer clicks over all modules should be put to sleep if a module needs to chatter like a door is open after time one it needs to be reported on the Can bus and what you are seeing is often not reported. There are benefits I have found to getting this right, besides the car starting straight away, the clock keeps good time, the radio does not loose its preferences, various modules specifically related to air conditioning don’t get turned on. I did a cranking test on my car it started at 12.5 and had a cranking voltage of 8.3 which is way lower than the minimum voltage the electronics works at. The car will not start if the voltage drops to 12.4 or lower. The spec for my car is 10v to 16v. The 10 volt level is too high a battery still has half its capacity at 9v. This said to me even with all of the ground straps you have shown us and mine has less there has to be something like three ohms resistance somewhere, so I would advise that you double up on some of 5he connections even putting them closer to where they are going to be used by critical modules. The result in Australia has been these cars are sold cheap all at around 100 thousand kms everyone is ditching them and with the exception of electrical problems, they are a nice car expensive to run but great for dragging a caravan up to 2000kg, quiet, great steering not bad interior, quirky American features like no auto locking, but you can start it remote. Weird radio that doesn’t implement CarPlay properly but okay. Example I can take calls but I can’t hear the directions from my Map app, no way for me to get factory reversing camera, no updates for Australian cars ever. I hope someone listens because this car is small the Jeep Cherokee is too big to fit in my garage, it has great pulling capability, Chrysler should have another go at a similar spec car. What do you think..

    I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. I have noticed for awhile that the Turn signal works when it wants to. I have seen another guy with the same jeep bang on the under part of the column and that did fix it. when I tried it that worked for awhile but the directionals work when they feel like it. I knew it had to be an electrical issue but I never thought about a ground issue. recently it has started effecting the door locks. and tonight it wouldn't crank at all. it acted like it had a dead battery but the battery is putting out what it needs to. no power or anything gets to the jeep I turn the key and nothing but it sounds like a circuit breaker when it gets tripped. when I wiggle the ground wire the truck gets power but still won't start and without anything being on I get a bunch of feedback thru the radio. I'm hoping that this fixes the issue cause I wouldn't have thought of this.

    Hey! Great video. Very informative. Quick question as I replaced my cables this past weekend. Had no issues besides the bolt snapping upon removal on ground attached to battery… had to use a tap screw to hold my ground from the battery in place. Might not have a proper ground. Today I had issues with my remote start and then cranking barely had any juice. Tried it again after getting out of work same issue. Went to AutoZone tested battery, starter, and alternator. All passed. I believe it is the ground giving me problems. Do you know the sizing of that bolt holding the initial bolt?

    Its April 28th, my jeep just had all the gaskets and hoses replaced, it would snap start, turn the key it was running. Today at lunch, Dead, no lights, no power, couldn't hear the fuel pump wind up, I had noticed if I just moved the cables around I could get juice but wouldn't get it to turn over. I am going to do this and we can see if its the cause. wager it is. Ill follow up.

    I have 2004 I took my doors off and seats out, hood off, and removed bumper. I have not put anything back on. I have no crank and no power, I am using as a body swap for 1956 f100 truck. Usually I start my loaner vehicle up, just to make sure grounds were not disconnected. What can I check? Would rather not put everything back together now to verify it all works.

    I have a flickering headlight issue on my XJ. It’s so frustrating bc when I actually need the lights (at night) they don’t work. It’s got a new battery and alternator, I’ve replaced the headlight / indicator switch maybe 2 times and that fixes the issues for months but they don’t even seem to last a year. Maybe it’s a bad ground somewhere.
