The first time I heard Pink Floyd, I was getting into my friend Gilbert's Buick and we headed off to high school about 1973. I get in the car and we start passing around a big fat blunt like we did every morning before school and money is playing on Gilbert's 8-track tape player he just got the tape over the weekend. We get to school, everybody gets out of the car except for me, I stay in the car and I listen to the entire tape a couple of times and smoke a couple of cigarettes and get to school in time for third period. A couple weeks later, the day I bought my first 8-track player for my car Dark Side of the Moon was the 1st tape I bought..

Thank you very much for withholding your comments to the end -- greatly appreciated.
Back when quadrophonics came in, this is one of the LPs I had in that format. Which is fitting because PF innovated by using a 4-channel sound system for live performances very early. This was a great track to hear in quad.
I'm sure someone's mentioned that this album is best heard end-to-end in a single session, to retain the intended continuity.
Alan Parsons was an engineer on this and he was largely responsible for the sound "samples". IIRC, it was recorded at Abby Road and they happened to have those around and Alan was excited to use them.
    Gilmore sang this one.

Never mind what others say, just react to each song in your own time and when you are ready listen to the whole albums. The singer was David Gilmore who is also the lead guitarist. The bass player was Roger Waters. Syd Barrett was long gone by the time this was recorded. Syd was let go of early in 1968 I believe. Again, when you are ready you might check out some of Syd's songs including Astronomy Domine, Arnold Layne, Candy And A Currant Bun, See Emily Play and Matilda Mother. I also recommend a song or two from Syd's first solo album, The Madcap Laughs: Octopus and No Good Trying.
I have yet to see anyone react to Syd's solo songs. They are different and remarkable for the simple fact that he was losing it at the time. Well, really, he had already lost it but the songs kept coming. I have been a big fan of Floyd since 1967. I saw them three times live in the early days. They have always been my favourite band and, in hindsight, they are the best band in the world ever. I love your reactions. You are a bit young to really get all the emotional impact and you're a man so it is not so easy to access the feelings this music stirs up, but wait maybe 50 years and listen again. Some of what you hear will break your heart. Thank you for your reactions and keep going.
Oh and ignore the heretics. (Just kidding) Stick to Floyd for now. No need to be like all the other reactors. Be who you are.

Listening to Floyd since the early 70s . The good bands back then were even better live than on their albums , thats what great musicians they were . We expected them to be even better , the album was just the taster of what was to come . Syd Barret left Floyd in 1968 , his time in the band was very brief but his influence lasted throughout the bands history , to the point where they wrote " Shine On You Crazy Diamond " as a tribute to him in 1975 , an incredible song amongst all the many legendary songs .

There was so much good music from 1960 to the end of the 1970s. From 1980 to 2021 only a few decent pieces.

The lead singer and lead guitar on "Money" are both David Gilmour. You will be hearing a great deal more about him as you go through the Pink Floyd catalog. A suggestion if you decide to continue this album: do "Time" and "Great Gig in the Sky" together and do "Brain Damage" and "Eclipse" together. The whole album should be heard at once, but above all don't separate those two pairs.

As for the sounds, I think Alan Parsons or one of the other producers/mixers/etc. actually went with a recorder and got the sounds. I think for the clocks on "Time," he went to a shop down the street from the studio and asked to record them, the shopkeeper agreed, and he got the sounds to engineer into the mix.

Syd Barrett founded the band but only really wrote the first album: The piper at the gate of dawn. And a "good bye" track, tragic, on the second album (Jugband Blues, the title of the track).
After that Syd Barrett only appeared in the imagery of some lyrics, in the inspiration of the moods and themes, Syd Barrett is a bit mixed with Roger Waters in the "Pink" character depicted in "The Wall"...
Oh by the way, which one is Pink ?

If you want to react to the whole album though, do it from the pulse concert. They did the entire Dark side live at pulse followed by three encore songs from two albums. Wish you were here, Comfortably Numb which you already watched and Run Like Hell!! Even if you don't react to the entire Pulse concert, you owe it too yourself to at least watch it.

Live Pulse concert songs to get a different range of songs: KEEP TALKING, ONE OF THESE DAYS, RUN LIKE HELL, their signature song of sorts SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND. Abbey Road Studio and Alan Parsons was the sounds engineer who had most of the sounds like people talking, money, clocks etc. Look up Alan Parsons, an artist in his own right.

David Gilmore is the voice and the guitarist, brilliant. Roger waters also sings and plays the Bass and is the lyrical mastermind of the band through their greatest era. Try Hey You, and Shine on you crazy diamond.

Floyd did mainly concept albums. Syd is not a part of Floyd. It’s David Gilmour and RogerWaters along with Richard Wright. It’s Gilmour’s voice you like so much. Syd was only on albums from 67 and before.

MTV helped kill the qaulity of music, I turned off my radio for years because the music became so homogeneous. Then as I was moving I turned on my radio to discover that music was back when heard tool and sublime. Good music is out there unfortunately it doesn't receive much air time on the radio unless you're fortunate enough to have a good independent radio station within reception range. I appreciate your enthusiasm and subscribed so I could relive my enthusiasm at first hearing the music of my life.

This may have been said before but Floyd only really released one commercial single, which was "Another Brick in the Wall, pt2"
Otherwise their music is all album based.
Radio stations around the world hated these concept style albums as it simply did not suit their 3min tack based format and as a result Pink Floyd, Yes and the like simply passed people by.
Dark side of the moon, Wish you were here, The wall, and arguably Animals were all albums to be listened to in one go. (or at least in two halves as these were all on vinyl only when released.)
Later albums could be listened too in different order as the tracks tended to stand by themselves.
David Gilmore, apart from being, in my view, the most emotive guitarist in the world, has a superb voice and has hung onto this ability for 40 + years.

BTW.... when you start a PINK FLOYD song be sure to spark up a bowl first and use head phones..... You'll know why.

  • @abnormal1501

Rock bands in the 60s and 70s often experimented with new technologies to give them unique sounds. Pink Floyd took that to the next level by adding non-musical sound effects, people talking and other background noises which work incredibly well with their songs. Pink Floyd could build a legendary song around a duck quacking.
Modern music seems to focus more on fast production and conformity which makes most songs sound very similar. The instrumentation often just sampled from existing music or computer generated while the singers are auto tuned to mask mediocrity or lack of talent. There is very little interest in taking risks other than explicit lyrics or shocking subject matter.

Just to give you an idea of what went into the "attention to detail" - First, you have to remember this album was made in 1972. There was no such thing as digital anything. It was all analog (16-track 2 inch tape). The sound of the change at the beginning is five different cash registers and two handfuls of coins bassist Roger Waters threw into a bowl on his wife's pottery wheel. The section of the song is in 7/4 time at 120 beats per minute. To get the timing right so that the sound of the change and cash registers matches with the playing that hasn't started yet you've got to figure out how much tape needs to play to fit the number of beats it needs to play for (four seconds). Then you've got to figure how long of a cash register sound you need for each register so that they play for the number of beats required (five at 1/2 second each, so 2 1/2 seconds total) and how many seconds of each change type you need (one beat each, 1/2 second each, one second). Now, you've got to figure out how many inches of tape that is going to require at 15 inches of tape per second. You would think that would be easy (4 x 15). No. You a 1/2 second dead beat to take into consideration (7/4 time not 8/4).Then, you've got to figure out where to start that tape so that it loops on the right beats of the melody. Then you've got to figure out where on the other tape to overdub it into the overall piece so that it loops with the rest of the instruments correctly. The song took two weeks to record. That four-second bit of sound took nearly a month to produce in post-production. And that's just the change. You gotta go through the same process for each of those voices you hear at the end.

What these guys would do in the recording studio is put sound down on tape then cut the tape physically measure it the exact length and do another sound cut that tape physically measure it to an exact length and tape it back on and record it all together! I've read this in several of their biographies. This is why back in the seventies in the analog era it would take them a long time to put an album together or at least part of the reason! Rodger Waters made one of the sounds at the beginning with coins in a clay jar his wife had made while spinning the jar with the coins inside of it and recorded that sound.

@ 8:08 The whole album is a story, a theme really with related songs many blending into the next one. Continue with Side 2 and do the next one "Us and Them". Did you hear the keyboard coming in at the very end? That was the start of it. When you finish doing Side 2, go back to Side 1 with "Speak To Me" and do all those up to Time and Great Gig, which you already have. Then you'll have all of Dark Side of the Moon in your growing library. But hey, if you're intrigued by our suggesting it, start at the beginning and skip the tracks you've done. That would be awesome too. We just like watching you digging this music and talking about it! we did the same back then too!! LOL! As far as to what album to suggest next, that's up to you. Perhaps continue exploring all their post-Dark Side albums and later take in the earlier works which will really blow your mind!! They did a lot of instrumental work in the past too. ✌️😎
