  • Our modern world assumes there has to be a rigid separation between work and play. But the conventional path of finding a job and climbing the ladder of advancement is something that no longer works for many people. A growing number of people are asking: how can I build a life I don’t feel the need to escape from?
It’s possible to do work that genuinely feels like play, and when you pursue this path it unlocks all kinds of incredible opportunities and puts you on the path to mastery. In this video I’ll share some ideas and psychological strategies on how you can do this, and we’ll look at the remarkable story of Yoky Matsuoka.
    CHAPTERS
00:00 - The rigid distinction of work and play in modern life
    03:19 - Part One: Yoky Matsuoka’s Story

08:17 - David Galenson and Conceptual innovators vs. Experimental innovators
10:14 - Peter Sims and the power of making “Little Bets” in your life
13:19 - Carol Dweck and the power of growth mindsets
18:45 - Part Two: Robert Greene and how to reach for mastery

I don't know if I have approached things through play but it is actually something I am trying to implement now. But the only reason I chase my dreams is because of my parents, in particular my father. Born in an African village in the 1940s he chose to learn French instead of English like his classmates and went to university in France to study journalism. Not business to make more money. Journalism. He then found his way to writing articles and translating for a bilingual magazine...one day he wrote an article about African brain drain, someone important read that article. That man contacted him and gave him a job. Following his heart led him to getting a job in one of the best European institutions. A job that now people have to do multiple degrees and have years of experience to get. Since he saw how his life turned out he always encouraged us to follow our dreams. That's the only way we persist during the failures.

Let’s say I’ve been working (and playing) on the idea of working as play. I’m an actor and on last November I reproduced Alan Watt’s lecture “Work as play” for 3 nights to bring this subject afloat. We should rethink our way of living.

Throughout my life work and play have interconnected I started as a participant moved into coaching onto ownership into hosting my own television show into game day televised play by play and color analysis the circle of play . Can be very rewarding if one simply allows themselves to simply play. These examples lead to building a company around you guessed it play. I speak all over the world and I see it as nothing more than play I don't live to work...

When I was a child I was constantly criticized and told I was stupid. Although naturally curious and playful, I grew to fear failure. This really handicapped me. In my mid-twenties I started to stretch and break out of the identity I was taught. I’m a retired engineer now and my life has been full of learning and growth. I’m very fortunate and grateful.

I dont know if this will help anyone but I had the oppertunity to build a house on a truck with zero previous experience which was by far the biggest project ever to me, it was duanting and freaked me out so what I did was make a deal with myself that if I took on the project that any time I felt overwhelmed or stuck that I could stop whatever I was doing and go do something else for as long as I wanted until I felt like trying again. This one thing took all the pressure and anxiety out of it and allowed me to think about problems at a speed I could handle, it utterly transformed my idea of what I was capable of if I can operate under no pressure. I simply had no idea how good I was at visualizing problems and solutions because I also didn't know how my brain gets completely shut down when experienceing anxiety.

I was born a boy in a hole and learned many of these lessons climbing out and it feels like i have lived at least 4 lives, and i am at the beginning of my 5th and most ambitious. It's daunting, scary every time. But you just have to believe in yourself, steady the ship, learn from your mistakes, and accept the outcome as your own. And always get up and try again, even if its something different. Own it, the good and the bad or you just won't grow to your potential. I remain hopeful i will get there and will try to enjoy the journey.

I'm always delighted to see one of your videos.
Truth be told, I think I'm someone with a fixed mindset. I'm trying to change that but it's hard.
I grew up in a quite abusive environment in which any kind of failure was grounds for harsh punishment, or a justification for ongoing abuse.
Then, as an adult, I went into the workforce where in multiple jobs, one small mistake is enough to get you fired.
I know that's all too much information, but my point is that I find it difficult to switch to a growth mindset when my overwhelming experience has been that if you're not good at something right away, then the consequences of any failure, no matter how small, will always be awful.

Thank you so much for this video!!
    You change my mind!!!
    When I was a kid, I wish I could be a musician.
I tried many things in live. I did 3 graduations.
I came to music when everything went wrong in life.
I was frustrated, because I seemed like I'm a loser.
But now, I realized, I'm living a dream. It's no perfect. I don't have one million. But I'm like that guy at the beginning the video.
I'm already living my dream but couldn't see.

Another great video as always. Many thanks, Elson. Funny how life goes, I used to play guitar but I wrecked my ears a few years ago. I was starting to get tired of music anyway after doing it for so many years, but the ear trauma let me move on. By chance I took a trip to Mexico, and the first day there I started learning Spanish and I found that I really enjoyed it. After a little over 4 years of learning I can hold a decent conversation and have met lots of new people! (And the ears have recovered somewhat...)

Currently at an intersection in my life where I’m trying to decide what to do and starting my own business and I’ve always had a lot of insecurity around whether I’m picking the right thing and whether I enjoy it and it will make money. I will say the only thing missing from this is capitalism, and how it stop us from pursuing what we really want. This is all spot on. I haven't achieved anything on a magnitude comparable to the examples here, but my own life reiterates all these points. I've always been an intensely curious person, ever since I was a kid. This has led me on an academic journey that has changed courses more than once as I follow my curiosity. I recently finished my PhD in biophysics, but my formal education is only about half of my education. I've embraced informal education in the form of books and podcasts etc. I've always viewed my academic journey as more of a spiritual journey than an intellectual one. Since day 1 of college to the day I completed my PhD, I was driven by a desire to understand myself and the world around me. The formal successes along the way were just a small bonus to the real value I was gaining every day. I would have never even completed my bachelors if I were motivated by a desire for success, or status, or money. That's too boring for me and I would not have been able to make the painful grind.

This is what I've unknowingly been doing my whole life, 42 now. I tell people I have a very fullfilling inner life, even tho it may seem like my life sucks from the outside to many. Fun has a bit of a different definition to me than them it seems. They usually dont get it bc they cant go there with me, but I try to bring up pearls from the depths of my mind by making things that I can show people so that i can communicate that to them on some level, albeit a shallow and superficial one. I see the way I approach life and progress as very natural to me, and to not be this way would make life incredibly bland. The way i see it, Yoki was slowly building her own Voltron. I have recently discovered my own Voltron, and am in the process of placing another small bet as I watch this. Just went to the local cop shop and got my fingerprints taken earlier this morning for a form. Its the next logical small step. Thanks for this one, algo (its liiiisteniiing) and Modern Intuitionist. Game on, playa.

Oh My Elson! You picked a fav movie of mine! Love, love, love Office Space! I quote it weekly at work. My family was talking today about the creativity us kids were aloud to have at our home. My Dad was always adding on to our tiny house. No end to gravel piles, pieces of wood, etc that we could play in or create art with. And - if we made a Lincoln Log village it was aloud to stay on the coffee table for a week! No wonder I stayed under my desk in Kindergarten and just wanted to go home. Thanks for another great "deep thinking" video!!

Quit your job here, and you'll starve to death. Stop being delusional. This isn't a Hollywood movie. Be grateful you have some way to make a living." What counterarguments would you have for this? Is it possible to pursue your dreams in a poor country where a job can be the difference between life and death? I request you do a video on that.

    • @ModernIntuitionist
      @ModernIntuitionist  Месяц назад +4

There's many ways to approach life, and no single "right way." It's a big world, and not everyone wants to (or has the inclination) to approach it with a sense of play, and that's okay.
Anyone who creates something new will seem 'delusional' to those around them. Because a creator must bring into the world something that doesn't yet exist, a vision that no one else can see, and yet must believe in the reality of that creation enough to see it through to fruition. The idea that we would have cities with electricity and running water was once considered 'delusional.'
I will say that I myself was born in a 3rd world country, and the parents grew up in a small village with no running water or electricity. My parents approach life with a sense of play and they are huge inspirations for me. Thanks for your comment and take good care!

I've been through this loop (dream, attempt, give up) many times now. I usually succumb to fear of being perceived as a failure, if I continue and then fail, despite knowing and believing that life is a game.
I wrote my master thesis on gamification, and got quite far with it. I thought it was just going to be about gamification, but I found links to addiction, flow theory and a lot of spiritual texts, linking flow, play and awareness together. I believe it is possible to activate flow, despite what many others believe, but it won't happen by trying to do it or thinking about how to do it, it'll come when we give up - which is why it seems impossible. Not giving up in general, but letting go of trying and just doing.
Some day I'm sure I'll get beyond the fear.. maybe just to find it again further down the road.. rinse and repeat. As long as I tried, I can die without regrets.

Just realized something after I watched this video... (great video by the way...)
As kids, we don't really know what we want, but we know what we are curious about... we then turn that into a hobby, and follow that to, well, wherever it takes us...
So the question becomes, 'what are you really, deeply curious about, and if it is multiple things, can you find a way to link them all...'
I get that this isn't always the case, but I strongly suspect it is in the vast majority of cases...
    Just my opinion...
P.S. can't wait for the next video ;-)

Thanks for sharing your insight, Julian. One of my professors once told me that it's not really possible to teach everything in a course; knowledge is always changing and being revised. The only thing you can hope to do is inspire a spark of curiosity, and only then will they be moved to begin the journey of learning on their own. That always stayed with me and it's something I always appreciated most from my favourite mentors and teachers: you could tell they loved their subject matter and were passionate about it.
May you find a way to link all your deepest curiosities and follow your bliss, my friend

@@ModernIntuitionist thanks for the reply brother! Well you’re crushing it man. These videos are insanely well put together and you have some VALUABLE insight and we are lucky to hear it from you. A lot of the things that you share, we know them to be true deep down and it’s almost like an aha moment, but when you explain it, it all comes together. We ALL have our own personal struggles and are all trying to “make it” whatever that means. Take care 🙏🏼❤️🤝🏼🤝🏼🤝🏼

Yes. Anytime I'm learning something new, if it's not approached from a place of wonder and curiosity, I don't learn as quickly, intuitively or cohesively. Any aversion to what you're learning is like driving through muddy terrain.

Thanks for another beautiful video, Elson 😊
Ultimately, I think if we see ourselves as successful then we are successful.
There's the idea that we have to make a grand impact on the world or people should know our name in order to reach that status but I find that not to be true. Finding joy and bliss within yourself is a life of success. There are people with few possessions and no desire to add to our material world who are the most joyful people on Earth and that makes them the most successful amongst us. They have found the key of pushing aside ego to access their inner spring of eternal joy 🥎

Shinn's book on the game of life is really great, but this video doesn't go into her insights. Sorry to disappoint, but I may make a video in the future exploring more of her insights. I appreciate you, Ropi! Take good care!

My Dad died recently, and I’ve been going back through my life over the past few days -like I used to regularly do when I was younger/before a lot of trauma as a young adult-and recreating my story again.
And then I come across these last two videos of yours today.
I appreciate your sharing. I’ve stifled my voice for many years now, and run from the pains in my mind, my friends and family are telling me to start speaking. And I’ve been lost on how. This was an eloquent affirmation, and I thank you, sir. 24:51
