  • Our Holland America Cruise Ship stopped for the day in San Francisco. We had not heard good things, but we wanted to see for ourselves so we got off and checked out Pier 39 at Fisherman's Wharf.

As an SF native, I've never understood why tourists don't leave the wharf and actually see the rest of the city. There are just so many better options for food, drinks etc 15-30 minute walk away. Its also much cheaper!!

Thanks for watching Josh!! To answer your question, I think maybe it's easier for tourists (especially cruisers that just have a few hours to work with) to go to an area where they know there will be something to see and do, vs go out exploring and maybe not finding anything.

Tourists don't know the city, and with all the bad publicity, they don't want to venture too far from the touristic areas.

well, you guys hardly saw San Francisco! Fisherman's wharf is just a huge tourist area with overpriced restaurants and stores. Just a few blocks away was Chinatown and the cable cars. A nice taxi ride could have taken you to the castro, twin peaks, the mission area, the Haight, Golden Gate park and many more interesting places that ARE San Fran!

Let me help you out here. There’s no authentic Mexican Food on Pier 39. You need to go to the Mission District. The buildings in front of you do not contain any churches. From left to right you have Salesforce Tower, Coit Tower (where my grandfather lived during the 1906 earthquake and helped save people), the Transamerica Pyramid and the old B of A building where my mom used to work.

San Francisco is such a great city. Thanks for your sharing your day with us! Pier 39 is very close for cruisers and I would definitely go there on a port day. I was just in SF last month and I really enjoyed restaurant hopping and the mid-week hustle and bustle. There's so much to see and do, and the weather is usually quite amazing. If anyone out there is thinking about visiting SF, absolutely go!

I appreciate you exploring this corner of The City. Once you get downtown, conditions can change block by block. That said, our most recent homeless count is the lowest in 10 years, and we continue to work to house homeless people. I've lived here (this time) for 23 years and wouldn't live anywhere else. We moved 2,800 from encampments to shelters. I love visiting Chinatown, Land's End, Golden Gate Park (the boats are back!), and more. San Francisco never sits still--even when there aren't any earthquakes!

  • @Janknitz1

Pier 39 and Fisherman’s wharf are tourist traps and the prices are ridiculous. If you want to stay in that area I suggest the Ferry Building which is more of an authentic SF experience because thousands of commuters pass through there daily. There are wonderful restaurants and shops and chances to just relax and see the Bay or City without so much hustle and bustle. It’s still pricey, but much less cookie cutter touristy. And the food is great.
There’s so much more to SF but you can’t do it in just a few hours.

I grew up around the bay and so did my kids. Never venture off out of tourists areas unless you’re familiar with the streets or with a guide. I wish I could still see the innocent beauty tourists who don’t live here see. Nice video! Lots of memories.

For the 40 years I've lived here in the inner S.F. Bay Area, the value of Fisherman's Wharf is that it keeps tourists away from the rest of The City. Nothing in that area is even slightly authentic, and no way should you stay in that area if you have more than 3 hours. Never ever go to Fishermen's Wharf if you come to S.F. It's the lowest level of tourist junk priced at 2x what it should be.

I live north of San Francisco so only make it into the city (to play vs. driving thru) a few x a year. Pier 39, while touristy, is always fun. Last time I was there, there was an amazing candy store at the end of the pier near the knife store with every imaginable commercial (and other, like taffy) candy you could want. So many great restaurants there. I prefer pier 39 to the other places further down (tho Ghirardelli's chocolate is pretty amazing several miles down the road). San Francisco has it's problems like many cities, but it's still a pretty cool place with lots of fun things to do and great places to eat! Thx for sharing and glad you enjoyed!

I'm making this comment about 5 minutes in, so forgive me. I am born and raised San Francisco. Graduated Balboa HS in 75. I left "The City" after HS to do the world tour courtesy of Uncle Sam. Twenty years later I retired and settled in Las Vegas. Growing up with higher prices is not the same as moving somewhere with high prices. Of course, in the last 8 years the city I still love has become a natiowide disappointment.
That being said, the video you shot from Pier 39, looking at the three building tops, is SO ICONIC, and surprisingly disappointing.
    L2R
    Salesforce Tower - 2018
    Coit Tower - 1933
    Transamerica Pyramid - 1972
I say disappointing because many vloggers often talk about places or things that they are visiting for the first time. That's Great to want to experience those activities. BUT, I would never visit a place, sail a cruise ship❤, or eat different foods, without knowing a little bit about it first. I enjoy looking forward to something just so I don't experience FOMO. Personally, I would hate coming back from something with regret because I DIDN'T KNOW.
Of course, this is MY choice. We all have our own preferences.
Keep up the good work. I appreciate it.

At least the actual Fisherman's Wharf has history; and Scoma's was a good place to eat (if you can find it!). Musee Mecanique is also a fascinating place to visit at the Wharf. But you miss all of that when you only visit Pier 39.

Born, raised and still living in SF. There’s a better cruise terminal, but my guess is that since Princess has the lease on it, they might be having a ship docked or soon to dock there. Pier 39 also has changed quite a bit, and personally, I like their sea food options. Some native may scoff at me for saying it, but whatever. My favorite is the Franciscan. As for the rumors and the talk, not gonna deny it, just need to be aware of your surroundings, don’t leave valuables visible in your rental car, and try not to act like a, well…a tourist. I’m the same way when I travel to other questionable places around the US and world.

Sharon/Jamie, do either of you happen to know? I've always wondered, but assumed that San Francisco can only accommodate the smallest of cruise ships. We love to sail from San Francisco as we avoid airfare, though have done most trips from there multiple times. It's been Princess "grand princess" (we've sailed on) but now "ruby. princess" sailing from SFO. I know there are a few other smaller ships that take off from there as well. Wonder what the largest ship is the docks can accommodate? It would be fun if a bit of a larger ship could take off from there. We'd sail just for the ship if a Royal/Carnival ship ever came in (dont think that's happened?)...

Hmmm... SF is a bit of a sxxthole right now but that's mostly downtown, I think. It has such a rich history that it' might have been exploring. Golden Gate Park, cable car, curviest street in the US (forget the name) Chinatown to name a few. A bus tour would have been worth it.

The pier in San Fran is always going to have insane prices because it's a huge tourist trap. The $15.99 for a 1/2lb of fudge has nothing to do with the economy and everything to do with it being a captive tourist trap. Heck, places that sell fudge or cheese in Wisconsin Dells in Wisconsin, has always been similarly steep when you could buy it for half that price at Cabela's Outdoor store and top notch cheese for a 1/3rd of the price at any quality grocery store in WI. Tourist traps know people will pay ithe price and they charge crazy prices because they can! 🤷‍♀️😂

    • @SharonatSeaTravel

@@SharonatSeaTravel There's nothing wrong with breaking down and buying what you'll enjoy while on vacation. It's not something we do every day, much less eat fudge every day. Sometimes you just have to live a little, enjoy some amazing fudge, pretend it is calorie free and not care if you're paying tourist trap prices! 😜

We are sailing on HAL Koningsdam in March 2024 for Ca cost trip. We are sad to see our itinerary changed from Monterey to San Fran. Stationed in Bay Area in 70’s and loved it. Not today with state of the city. We are from San Diego and see the crime and homelessness taking over our once beautiful city also. Love HAL..

We stayed there before jumping on the Carnival Miracle last month. SF is a dirty and disgusting city with a lot of disturbed people roaming the streets. I feel bad for the people because this place used to be a gem. Our highlight was the view from the Bar atop the Marriot Marquis and eating at Fang's. We went to Muir Woods and Napa and that was fantastic.
