    Just spent 3 hours on my 2004 Solara and managed to change all of them but #5. This is definitely not a piece of cake if you dont have skinny arms. Folks, this is one of the few instances where SIZE MATTERS. I went through all of the 5 stages of grief, and even questioning if God exists at times. I still think it is worth to try, but only if your car is fully paid.

    Old video by now. Thanks for this. I haven't yet attempted on my old Highlander, but my biggest concern is getting the clips off of the coils. I did a 3.5 on a 2015 Lexus and the clips were a huge challenge - even using special tools to raise the release tabs. On that engine, I finally succumbed to pulling the intake plenum, which I was trying to avoid.

I can get coil one under the PVC out, but the rest may seem to be too hard to do. BUT I WON'T GIVE UP! :) I also use the video to compare my hand with yours by measuring your hand while it held the 6 inch tool. We are pretty comparable in hand size.

    #1 is fairly doable and that kinda saved the day for me today. The main obstacle with the #3 and 5 will be those coil bolts and plugs being super stuck.
    I fixed a somewhat related issue on my customer rx330 just to have the engine start misfiring badly on 1 and 3. Luckily, I was able to work the number one coil and swap it with one from bank 2. The misfire followed the coil and that's what we'll address next time I see him.

  • @modernmasculinity6560
    @modernmasculinity6560 29 дней назад

    Here is what you should know before attempting this technique…
    1. Don’t even consider this method unless you have very long super skinny girl arms, and even then they are going to get tore up. There is maybe 6” max between the firewall and the coil packs.
    2. If the existing plugs are old and rusty or require any force at all to break loose you’re not going to be able to accomplish that by hand turning that little wheel ratchet.
    3. You’re going to be doing this entire job completely blind and by feel. If you drop anything, which you almost certainly will, you’re either never going to see it again or spend God knows how long trying to find it.

    • @35andRetired
      @35andRetired  29 дней назад +1

      I can do 10 pull ups so I resent you calling my arms girly ;)
      You don't use the wheel to break the spark plugs loose, you need a ratchet for that. The wheel just facilitates quicker undoing once loose.
      Fair point...I was a mechanic so I got used to doing stuff blind. Not everyone will be up for that.
      Lastly, based on the other comments, lots of people are doing this successfully and I don't think they are all girly armed ;)
      Thanks for the feedback, I am sure it will indeed help some folks.
      P.S. you could just TRY this and if it doesn't work, plan B is to take the manifold off which you would do anyway if you didn't even TRY this....

    Well, I did followed your procedure to take out the three spark plugs at the back successfully. However, when I screwed the new spark plug #5 into its position, there is no way for me to take my spark plug socket out. :( I am not sure if you had the similar issue. After all, I may need to take the intake manifold apart to get the job done anyway.

    • @35andRetired
      @35andRetired  2 месяца назад

      Can you use a magnet to pull it back out? Like a magnetic pick up tool that mechanics use?

    • @LonghornBear
      @LonghornBear 2 месяца назад +1

      @@35andRetired I tried, but the magnetic pick is not strong enough. My socket has rubber insert. I have to unscrew and take it out again. Then use a tape to secure the connection between the socket and the extension firmly. After that, I hope the socket will be pulled out with the extension all together.

    • @35andRetired
