Some of your target numbers are a lot different than my Martin setup. It specs 0.002" at the 8th. I didn't see you check action at the 1st to qualify the nut. Many videos do not show starting with a level fret board, I think that is very important! Get it level on the truss rod, level/crown/dress the frets, then let string tension give the relief. Adjustments to the truss rod are used to compensate string gauge used AND the preferred tuning. My low E is tuned to D, so I'm down a whole step. At this low pitch, the truss rod normally needs to be pulled in just a touch. Great video! I hope Covid wasn't a challenge for you and family. Stay safe in our new, mad world!

I may not have caught that on camera. I aim for .015- .020” first fret. As far as doing the level and crown, I make the neck flat as possible with a .004” feeler under a slotted flat edge. Once strung at desired I fry to go as flat as possible without buzz. That often leaves it between .007 - .012. Mind you this is on a guitar that I have no idea about how it has been cared for. Like what kind of humidity it was kept in and what kind of twists may have occurred over time. I’ve got a client who has two Taylor guitars. One has a relief that is set at .005” relief and the other is won’t go any better than .012” of relief. Same model. The one that has a flatter fingerboard is drop D. Both strung with 12-54. Thank you for watching.

@@stringmanguitars4329 Drop D with medium strings, must be a boomer! I'm getting ready to level out my little fret divots from playing it. What do you think about stainless steel frets? I probably have two more divot repairs left before they'll need to be replaced...

@@craigpierce7996I’ve never experienced stainless on an acoustic. I have had them on an electric. If check into it first. I’d imagine it would change the sound. I don’t know.

Hmmm, No 'sharpie' used on the tops of the frets initially in order to determine high/low spots????

Thanks again for a very helpful video, the only question I have is the string gauge you put on that guitar.

So I have this cheap guitar that doesn't have a truss rod. It's kind of bowed a bit (concave) and it buzzes on some frets. Would levelling the frets fix the buzzes? It would be helpful, thank you

Probably not. Truss rod access would be either in the sound hole or at the headstock. Fret level and crown would cost you over $100 at most places. I'd just buy a good used guitar.
