Very good job in explaining the installation. Noting any mistakes you may have made are actually beneficial in helping us avoid them. That’s key to me. We all have to correct minor miscalculations the first time we do an install.
Thank you. I try to keep my videos as real as possible. I feel if I run into trouble, then my viewers could run into the same trouble. 👍 So glad to help! Thank you for watching. Check out hundreds more of our videos at www.aroundthehome.org
This is the best attic ladder replacement video I’ve ever seen! Thanks.
Wow, thanks!
Dude, You totally nailed it. I have three attic ladders I need to install for a customer. I'm hoping I can do this off my 8' A frame ladder. You made it look really easy doing this from the ground and not inside the attic with the door closed. After watching this I feel confidant I can do this on my own. GREAT VIDEO!!!! Thanks

That's what struck me too. Most of the other attic ladder install videos feature the single installer escaping from the attic via an awkward maneuver.
Good video. Lots of attic ladder videos on youtube, but I wish more had people framing a rough opening from scratch. That's what I'd have the most trouble with. Most have the rough opening ready to go.

i appreciate the deliberate simple explanation of the entire process, so with confidence we
should be able to install this ladder without surprises or questions re: the process itself..
thank you for taking the time to educate us as you have done....an excellent video !!!

Thanks for the video, with your video instructions it took me about an hour to put it up (one men show) THANKS‼️

@@AroundTheHome1 The guy we hired took three days to finish the install. He left our ceiling open around the stairs where the drywall was supposed to go.
@@artrainger Ouch, he must not be a carpenter - OR a youtube watcher.
Thank you so much for the video, you're the man, I couldn't find a better video. Very detailed, and practical although luckily for me I don't have an old ladder to uninstall, so I could've skipped this part until new installation begins.

Thanks so much!

Good video. This help me a lot. I just finish removing old one two hours ago. Hopefully new one will install much easier. I did not remove hardware like the springs or the four screws up front so had to do that after cutting 8 screws. Lesson learned. Will put up new one tomorrow.
Good luck.
You shouldn't shim the hinge side. You should screw direct to your header for better stability and strength.
I totally agree, movement will develop over time causing the function to be iffy and lose its rigidity at the hinge side/point.
Werner should pay you. Excellent video!!! Now I can install mine!!!
Awesome, glad to help. For more great videos check out my website www.greatwhiteninja.com
Dude great job you explained the install perfect I'm getting ready to install my own thanks for the help and tips
Glad I could help
I like this common sense approach. I would not have suspected that this would be a one-man task. Now I can do this too. Mine is aluminum also, so there shouldn't be a problem with the weight. It was a good idea to add the text in about placing shims at both ends first so the frame would not shift while anchoring.
I added that text because I did have it slip on me and snap on me like a bear trap. That sucked. Thanks for watching. Don't forget to stop by our website www.greatwhiteninja.com
I really enjoy your videos. Unlike so many so-called DIY experts on YT, you actually know what you are doing. You instruct in a way that is entertaining and thorough. You should have more subscribers. I've subscribed with notifications. Thanks for the content.
Thank you very much for this comment. I really like to hear when I am able to help people.
Awesome video. I just installed mine. Luckily I had my wife to help lift, and my M18 metal cutting saw to go choppy choppy. I screwed up mine a bit too. The open end sits up higher by the thickness of the door panel (1/4 in). I'm going to level it when I trim it out. Very nice ladder. I'm loving it.

Since the old ladder is trash, you could also cut it off to greatly lighten the load. Much easier to handle then.
Screwing the hinge side directly into the header would be a stronger and longer lasting action. Once the hinge side is screwed into the header, then verify the squareness of the access frame/opening. Once squared screw (Pilot holes are your friend) the opposite end into the header and shim as required. Be careful not to pull on the frame of the ladder while doing this because you can move it out of square.
Well explained. Thanks very much!
Glad it was helpful!
I am going to add a board to take up the gap. Shims are good but it is best to minimize the number you use.
Thank you for the good video. I do have a question. I may have missed an important step or steps which I needed to see. Here is my question: after you installed the two 1x4 plates on both short sides of the hole and you raised the unsecured ladder to be held up by the two plates, the next part of the video I saw was that you were standing on the ladder. I didn't see the steps of how you secured the ladder before you stood up on it. How did you do it. I am subscribed.
Thank you
Sam, thanks for your question. I think you are referring to the part of the video at 14:23 where I am starting the shimming process and bolting of the ladder. If that is the part that you are referring to, I am not standing on the attic ladder. I am still on my MT-17 ladder. I hope that helps answer your question. Great video!! Thanks for sharing
I'm not sure I like the shims on the hinge end. Seems like it would be best to snug the hinge end against the joist blocking.
nonetheless, i watched quite a few of these one-man attic-ladder installation videos and this is the best one.
Not everyone agrees with that, but I have had no problem with it. It helps to center it with the hole and as long as you are using long enough hardware it is good. If you are using the smaller lag bolts that come with it I would probably not shim that side. Nice job but I’m pretty sure the Werner instructions say to push the hinged end hard to your rough opening so no shims are required there. Shims are then used on the opposite end and the two sides.
Pretty sure that you are right, but that is not the best in every situation. I wanted this ladder to be put back in the same spot so the trim lined back up. Given the hardware that is provided they don't want you to shim the hinge side to possible make the bolts too short. But I upgraded the bolts and added a little length to them at the same time, fixing that problem. If you stick with the shorter bolts then I would not suggest shimming the hinge side. 👍 So glad to help! Thank you for watching. Check out hundreds more of our videos at www.aroundthehome.org
@@AroundTheHome1 makes sense !
@@AroundTheHome1 by the way… I am looking for that ladder and apparently they’ve just been discontinued! I roughed my opening for exactly 25“ x 54”. Louisville and other manufacturers seem to be 25 1/2 inches rough opening. I think I’ll be calling them to see if it’ll squeeze into a 25” opening.
Though I don't know that I made that real clear in the video.
Just been discontinued. Well that sucks. Hope you find one that will work for what you framed out. Good luck with your project.
thanks.....been putting this off for awhile. Amazon sale right now on an aluminum latter.. one thing I thought is to Cut the Wooden ladder in half/or pieces and take it off. Then lighter to deal with when getting down?
Sure, that would make taking the wooden one lighter. Thanks for watching and don't forget to stop by our website for many more helpful videos. www.greatwhiteninja.com

Great Video Nathan, Thank you. I need to add one to a non-pre-existing ceiling. My question it, whats the best way to support the trust beams that will be cut until I can get a 2x6 screwed into them for support?
There is no real way that I can answer that without seeing it. I am assuming that you are only cutting one truss to fit this in? If so just a few cross supports to tie it in to the surrounding trusses at first until you build the ladder box.
You can't cut engineered roof trusses, if that's what youi mean by "trust beams". Not allowed, and will violate code and void design and engineering of a structural element of the house.
fold the bottom section inward when measuring and cutting. Maybe put it on a adjustable horse so it's horizontal.
9:44 that’s why I always have a small tupper ware container ready..lol
How did you know that you would have enough clearance to open the stairs while they were balanced on the two boards without them falling on top of you?
I would measure the new ladder.
Quick question, my instruction say mount hinge end flush to header and I noticed you shim that end. Does it matter either way? Thank you
I shimmed mine to center it in the hole. The hinge side needs to be strong so mounting it flush to the header is good. The hardware that I replaced gave it the extra strength that it needed. The lag screws that come with it may be a little short to do the job correctly as I showed. I also did not shim my ladder's hinge far out. Thanks for watching, and I am glad to help. Why didn’t you just leave the trim up and use the trim to hold the new ladder in place?
Because trim is decorative and not structural. It will not hold the weight of the ladder.
Thanks that is an excellent video! Lots of very good info!

I am wondering if you dont mind, what is the angle that the ladder is when it is fully extended. The reason i ask is i have a work bench right under the attic and am wondering if the ladder when extended will reach over the work bench. I know i can just move it further out, but I would like to know what that angle is from straight up and down to the angle of the extended ladder if you don't mind checking for me , thanks
I really don't know the downward angle of this. This was not installed in my garage so I can't check. I did check Werner's website, but it was not listed in the specs, nor in the FAQ section. If you really want to know, I would go to their website and send them a message. Thanks for watching. Don't forget to stop by our website www.greatwhiteninja.com

Exelen 👍👍👍👍
How did you resolve the issue of the ladder being shorter than the distance between floor and ceiling?
If that happens then the wrong ladder was installed. The only way I know of to fix this, other then re-installing the correct length ladder, is to build a wooden platform that you can slide under the ladder.
Muy bueno trabajar
Thanks for this!
Especially minute 18...I had not considered this and the fall would have killed my wood floor (or me : )
