Verstappen isn't last of the late brakers on a hot lap, but he is very capable of braking just as late as any other driver out there in any direct on track battle without barely ever locking up. Verstappen is also very very strong at the first corner of the first lap. So I'm not sure where this idea comes from that Norris should have been able to outbrake Verstappen. Surely you have seen by now how many times Verstappen comes out on top in a situation like this.
Simple Lando was on the outside which allows him to carry more speed into the corner than Max who was approaching the corner at a more acute angle hence slower speed. If Lando had opened the steering a little and gone deeper into the corner Max would have had to do a spain 2021 against Lewis and risk smashing into the side of Lando
Indeed a strange comment from Peter. Late braking might win you the corner and a position but it isn't necesarily the fastest way around a track. Knowing when to use which is what makes you a fast and versatile driver. Aside from that, braking early for one corner might set you up with a far better entry into the next so you can overtake easier then. I think Max knows what he is doing.
@@truth4reel The problem is that if the car on the inside brakes later you have nowhere to go on the outside and you can easily lose a bunch of places. Norris also couldn't react to Verstappen because Verstappen was behind. Verstappen could always react to the moment Norris braked to make sure he would brake later. Staying around the outside is a very difficult move to pull off, especially on the first corner of the first lap of a race.

Mc claren take a chance on max for 2026 .unbeatable with lando .Otherwise wise Mercedes in 2025 or Ferarri. This wonderboy is for every teamfantastic . It’s really a race monster. At home sim racing. Totally hating the glamour off a big star. No give him some food ,some love and for the rest racing - training. This boy is a monster. And what I loved he is so down on earth 🙏🏼🙏🏼👍👍thanks Peter Windsor the English man with the most brains about racing 👍👍👍👍👍
I actually liked that the stewards decided that both the Norris/Max, LeClerc/Sainz and Lewis/Sainz were all part of hard racing and that they didn't intervene. Russel was royally screwed by Mercedes, first they botched the first pitstop and than they put him on the hard tire. I really would like to know why Mercedes thought that that was a good tire and Lewis iterated during the post race interview that hards were never an option for him as discussed for the race...
He couldn't deliver? Meanwhile, Piastri, the next great thing, was miserable. Beating Oscar by those margins is slightly more impressive than beating Perez. LOL.
I said it under the last race analysis and I'll say it again - Max might win from 20th on the grid in a toyota prius without a safety car and everyone will still be talking about how someone nearly got him and how great of a job someone else did. I used to not believe that there is a british bias in the media and sky in particular, but boy oh boy, the commentators could not shut up about Norris today, completely ignoring that he had CLEARLY a faster car and bottled it his own. The DOTD reminds me of that time in Austira 2021, where Leclerc was overtaking peopel a touch too closely and ended up clipping Gasly's tire with his front wing, taking him out of the race and having to pit for a new wing, coming out towards the back. He basically spent all race trying to undo the damage he did to himself, finished behind Sainz, took one driver out and got DOTD still.
Lap 1 incidents at the start usually have lenient rulings because the field's so packed. This is extremely common. Moreover, if you can't take a few shunts in a race, you don't deserve to call yourself a real racing driver. Instead, you'll end up like Sainz crying out for the rule book just because he can't take a bit of a hard racing.
The difference between Max and the others is that Max is so consistent. Perez was his rival early season, Then Leclerc was his closest challenger, Russell in Canada joined the fray and now Norris is back again after being the main rival Imola, Miami and Canada. The challengers change but Max is the common denominator.
So many suffer from recency bias. I watched the 1996 Spanish GP and if you want to see a master at work, watch Schumacher in that very wet race. Some of the drivers from yesteryear did masterful things in a time when a mistake could cost your life. These modern cars allow the current crop to race almost with impunity.

20 seconds? Why not lap the entire field 10 times over? You're surely shortselling your god there, buddy. Max won with the worst car ever made today just like every other day.
Indeed when you look at consistency.. Max is absolutely stunning... between 22.1 and 22.2 for huge amount of laps. Never seen this consistency in before in F1, this is absolutely nuts!
Max would do better than Lando. Dunno about 10 seconds, but he wouldn't have dropped to 3rd after turn 1 and thus could have immediately start managing the tires. As soon as these tires would come to him he would have walked away to the victory. McLaren has the fastest car now.
I think he does.... people can hate him, but even people as Eddy Jordan says that if you put Senna, Schumacher and Max in the same car, Max would win every time😅
Today max would have won with 10-15secs for sure… I am still in disbelief how Max could win when Lando literally always was 0.3-0.5 secs faster per lap, in every stint and with every tire. Its the couple of push laps in the third stint that saved max. He kept the distance when he had around 5-6 secs gap to Lando. Amazing drive…
We hear every race week-end on how RED BULL is hurting and all top teams are 'catching-up'..well ,it"s been 2 fakking years they've had to 'perfect their own race cars..it is about fakking time...!!..MAX ,today with his 61th race win (has won 50 of the last 75 races..!!..is still crushing the competition...the way he took the lead on Russel (move boy..!!) was just enormous..& the way he nursed his sets of soft till the end to keep Norris at bay was also masterclass..(Norris was cooked at the end of this race)..Max is the KING-BOSS of Formula 1 right now...others will have to wait before they take his crown.
yep.. and just being close or marginally having the best car wont cut it.. cause the RB team, the pitwall and verstappen as a driver are a mighty combination.
His strength in stretching the life of tires is resulting in overcut strategies rather than undercuts, which imo lost Lando and McLaren this Spanish GP and the last race in Montreal
Two things I noticed A) I really like Lando‘s way of taking the blame stepping in an saying it like it is. B) I’m thoroughly annoyed by whining complaining and snitching drivers, sainz schooled focus on driving and fighting…. I would love to see a rule like in tennis, a team a drivers can ask the Stewart’s twice in a race to look into an incident, but if they are told they are wrong, give em 5 sec penalty… that will reduce the sobbing whining calls to zero.
What I found funny was that after the race, Lando literally told the viewing audience that he wasn't driver of the day because he had the fastest car and didn't win the race. And Perez, what a disappointing weekend, it made Max seem even more like a superhero. Lando will be really strong in these next two races.
McLaren definitely have the fastest car now. Hopefully Red Bull can keep up so the racing remains close. Again some Max brilliance giving him the win, mainly the start and the overtake on Russell. Lando also very good, him and Max are the standout performers this season!
skysports made it out that max was very irritated when he didnt hear mode 10 or mode 2 . this is a whole new thing for them now max does not have the fastest lap and still no brit can win .
It all sounds worse with g forces going trough your body aswell as the loud (I mean in comparing to v10 it’s a snoozefest) engines aswell as signal not everywhere on the track as good as it should be .
Was forced to listen to Sky this weekend.... Idk how these people kept their job for so long. Hamilton makes a DRS overtake and they make it seem like he just cured cancer meanwhile Verstappen makes an overtake and it's because a (2) lap tire delta. Granted it is great to hear their confusion when Russell and Hamilton are close cause they don't know who to praise for the most mundane driving. Idk what happened with Bernie but man was she talking shite all weekend. F1TV started out rough but these last 2 seasons they are by far the superior team and by far more enjoyable to listen to during the race.
I can’t believe Lando Norris got driver of the day. Makes no sense to me. He threw it away at the start and didn’t maximize having the fastest car by far. Verstappen on the other hand, secure the lead after the second or third lap consolidated and won in slower equipment, I guess the Brit’s love a loser . Driver of the day me hole .
Fastest car is broad statement. Its not the fastest like how RB was last year. Look at Piastri only went from P10 to P7. Its only marginally faster than the RB not including the straights.
After max took the lead , he never relinquished it. The interesting stint length almost spiced up the race . I think lando should have pitted earlier for the undercut and perhaps slow stops cost him . The tyre delta didn’t really give lando the advantage that outright lap time would have given him from the earlier stop. Max still miles ahead of the field. Nobody even got close to challenging him on track
I was stuck to lap data during the whole race because i felt it would be ultra tight… In my view Lando should have gone to pits earlier on the first stint, by staying out he lost about 5secs including the bad pitstop… I‘m pretty sure he would have made it if he didn‘t lose that time. Lando was always 0.3 faster on any set in every stint.
@@Roxakif he was always faster on any stint with every tire shouldn’t he be first? The copium is tough. Fact is, he was quicker with tire delta and slower before. Max cleared George in one lap, Lando couldn’t in 5. Simple as that. Besides that the times were on par. Verstappen quicker when tires newer, Norris quicker when his tires newer. Track position made the difference and that one was earned by driver skill.
@@Roxakand before you come at me with exact lap times at exact same laps on each tire; forget about it, you don’t know engine settings or fuel rate, it’s not as simple as that. What’s clear is, and they both repeated it in the cooldown room, that getting into overtaking range is really tough on your tires in the heat. One got it done against George the other didn’t, everything else was chess and not the cars.
@@youbetu18 i will let you check the laps for yourself, i have done it for 66 laps this afternoon already. How can you win with faster laps you ask? By fucking up a pitstop, staying out too long and traffic. Thats how… Lando would‘ve won if he came out first on lap 1, no doubt.
Last 10 laps Max was just taking it easy. Max is on 61 GP wins. In 2020 Max was 81 GP wins away from Schumi. Today he’s only 30 GP wins away from Schumachera 91 GP wins. Only 26 years old.
crazy! but those last 30 wins will be harder to win unless RBR come out with a banger car again in 2026 seeing as the field is so close now and RBR not being fastest overall. unless a major upgrade helps a lot I don't see Max winning more than 7 or 8 out of the 14 races that are left in the season.
Max was definitely on edge when he ask "strat 10 or strat2". Max himself said he like to win by a big margin, destroy the opposition, so him winning by 2 sec was not by choice. Carlos complained over nothing. He gave no room to Lewis on the inside which effectively puts Lewis on the curb. All this while Lewis was along side so they touch because of it. Max is as consistent as ever. George fighting Landon harder than Lewis did was a mistake because the pace advantage meant that the pass was inevitable, so why destroy your tires and lose time to the cars behind? Great race and on to the next one.
Amazing to see a very dominant car hit its ceiling and rivals come in storming. Its also nice to realize that the young and coming antonelli will have a good car next yr.
Lando's start wasn't good. He drove too much diagonally, lengthening the distance towards the corner and opening up too much room for Russell to pass and he basically lost the race getting stuck behind George. Max can brake the latest of them all. He generally doesn't because it's all about how fast you can exit a corner.
The insight Peter offers on Max and Lando friendship is accurate. While all the broadcasters call them best buddies, it's not true. Lando said as much. They seem to get on but they have very different interests outside the sport. Great race analysis!
peter, referring to your comment (at 8:29 of your video) on max's performance when being chased by lando - max did make a mistake. if i can remember correctly, it was around turn 7 - 8.
"probably referring to the top speed" 0:59. Nope, McLaren was faster overall, not just top speed. Surely someone who has so much experience with racing would be able to tell he's not just talking about a 2-3kmh top speed difference.
If Lando was 'fastest overall' he would have won the race. F1 is about being the first to take the chequered flag, which means you are the fastest overall. It is not about 'if' or 'could have',
@@PAULSWorld131 Well no, in this context I'm talking about overall car performance. The only thing that prevented Norris from winning the race is his inability to overtake Russell in the 1st stint. He had the overall faster car.
According to Zak "Fatso" Brown Barcelona is just a B track, but of course if Lando would have won it would be an A track. But it's obvious that Red Bull doesn't have the quickest car anymore, so it will be very interesting to see what will happen in the next races. FM1 exciting again.
Verstappen and Red bull again showing why they're still the best.. Pretty good start, brilliant fast overtake on Russell (which Norris couldn't do) and from there on great mangement of the tyres and strategy.. Norris and Mclaren blew it at the start and with their strategy (why the longer 1st stint?!?), losing to much time behind the Mercedes.. It was obvious once in free air Mclaren with Norris was the fastest car today but Verstappen and Red Bull simply did a better job again taking the win in this Grand Prix.. That's 3 out of the 4 last races now they did that.. 69 points ahead in the WDC, I do not see Verstappen lose that lead, even if McLaren and Norris are faster now.. Which is also why I do not fully understand why Norris got DOTD from the viewers, but ala, that's proven to be some silly popularity contest anyway...
First stint was the deal-breaker, 100%. He was so fast in every stint, he would have caught max if he didnt lose that much time in the first stint. Don‘t know what traffic he would‘ve had, but seeing how well he got past the mercedes, i don’t believe this would‘ve been an issue. Props to max who always had an answer in stint 3 when Lando was attacking. But Lando always way aroune 0.3-0.5 faster than Max. Well done to both. But today McLaren #4 was the fastest car… He will make the season a bit more competitive, Max‘s no. 4 is gonna require a bit of a stretch…
Lando was 0,6 secs quicker through sector 1, Lando driving all over the kerbs going full at it. He not only was a little slower on the straight, but slower in general in race pace, which is much more worrying for him..
I think you need to consider Lewis allowed Lando to pass, no point fighting. George couldn't help himself and that allowed Lewis to get close, not scrub his tyres, and was much more sensible.
Max said on tv that lando got closer because didnt want to risk anything. If push came to shove he had enough left to race. Personally lando was lucky not to get punished
@peterwindsor I've always found this line a bit weird to read: We support the Race Against Dementia. The Race can be explained very differently than a competition. I would personally just go for We support Race Against Dementia as the website is also called.
Really was a great race. Lando gets just a slightly better launch and this race is completely different. Love to see McLaren challenging from a car that started this season objectively worse than the RB on virtually every category

Anyone who knows anything about F1 knows this is the proof that shuts down all the trolls. Norris knows this of course, and tried to beat him in his own game..
@@gammaraygemSome people also prefer to forget that he gave Merc a hell of a fight for years out of a car that had a huge top speed disadvantage. But it was the same with Schumacher back then.
It looked to me that Lando just braked before Max into the first corner and that is where he lost it. Not the first time I have noticed him lose out there.

The mclaren is an absolute monster, and Lando couldn’t deliver again. This was his 114th race, so the experience excuse doesn’t work anymore.
Max is better.
The "problem" to all the drivers in F1 is that Max is driving !
Lando did a good job this weekend. Max just did a phenomenal job😂
He couldn't deliver? Meanwhile, Piastri, the next great thing, was miserable. Beating Oscar by those margins is slightly more impressive than beating Perez. LOL.
I give MacLaren and Norris about 2-3 more races to get their strategy and racecraft in order. After that no more excuses.
Nice music at the end, love the Spanish flair, very fitting. Thanks for another great video, Peter.
Max is a dragon slayer. I love he expects perfection, and we still here stories of how he’s good friends with Lando
Lando did slightly push Max of the track at the start, well visible indeed, however not penalty serious 😊
if it was the opposite, you could be sure that Max had gotten some seconds as penalty.
Max is the GOAT but we may be in for a hell of a season after all. Lando is dangerous in the McLaren I suspect he gets at least a couple more wins
True, Max is the fastest driver of them all, but Lando becomes a real treath for the championship.
Yes definitely more wins
The way Max is driving with Lando chasing hard, no mistake, reminds me about Lewis last time..

The difference between Max and the others is that Max is so consistent. Perez was his rival early season, Then Leclerc was his closest challenger, Russell in Canada joined the fray and now Norris is back again after being the main rival Imola, Miami and Canada.
The challengers change but Max is the common denominator.
The others' car strengths change also, it's not only the drivers.

Max would do better than Lando. Dunno about 10 seconds, but he wouldn't have dropped to 3rd after turn 1 and thus could have immediately start managing the tires. As soon as these tires would come to him he would have walked away to the victory. McLaren has the fastest car now.

But he took his tyres before Lando, so... undercut.
Two things I noticed
A) I really like Lando‘s way of taking the blame stepping in an saying it like it is.

Max was very impressive again. I feel he could have won in Lando’s car and Lando didn’t. He has it all.
Change broadcast, Sky is insuferable.
Max didn’t hear if GP said 2 or 10 while focussing so much. He simply asked what did you say.
It all sounds worse with g forces going trough your body aswell as the loud (I mean in comparing to v10 it’s a snoozefest) engines aswell as signal not everywhere on the track as good as it should be .
Desperately Brits….
Why don't you find a wall to stick your finger in and stop the drivelling.

@@frankhuurman3955Would’nt bet on that if you see the last few races, Max still wins 2 out of 3 pretty consistently

Yes max fighting 3 teams by himself checo Patrese wake Up
He is just playing with the field still, happy for Mercs and Alpine. It was a very solid Catalunya GP.
Verstappen and Red bull again showing why they're still the best.. Pretty good start, brilliant fast overtake on Russell (which Norris couldn't do) and from there on great mangement of the tyres and strategy.. Norris and Mclaren blew it at the start and with their strategy (why the longer 1st stint?!?), losing to much time behind the Mercedes..
