My DM asked me, and another friend to help make cities for his up coming campaign, so I made a couple of small cities, with factions, and guards, and such. I didn't do much as he still wanted freedom in city layout kind of as that way we wouldn't have the map until we were there. I did ask if I could build one for the back story of my character as they come from nobility, they said sure, so I spent a lot of time designing this city, the lore of it, the layout while still giving him the ability to flavor it, and I even got into 3D modeling a bit to make the castle, spent a few hours on that alone.
And after all if that he was like "actually I want to do a completely different campaign now in a completely different world." I was a kinda pissed

Secondly, although I've never experienced this, I've heard of a lot of kids who think that DND is a Stranger Things game where you play as the main characters from the show and fight monsters in an '80s town. How I deal with Stranger Things's fans who want me to introduce them to D&D :
    - Send them the Player's Handbook as a PDF and tell them to just read the introduction.
    - Tell them to pick the class and the race they want to play. They don't need to read anything more beside the few paragraphs of description at the beggining of what they are instersted in.
    - Reassure them that they don't need to fully grasp the rules or read the 300 pages, just the descriptions. If they are not satisfied with the races in the PHB and want to play a human cat, I can give them more options.
    - Tell them that once they'll choose their race and class, we will have a one to two hour personnal session to create their character sheet. I will then explain the basics of the rules, and help them imagine a backstory and a personality for their character.
    - Tell them that once all of that is done, we will be set. We will just have to find a four to six hour periode where everyone is available to play the game.
    - ????????
    - Never ear from them ever again.
And this is how you get rid of Stranger Things fans. You're welcome.
To be clear, I'm not a gatekeeper. I love to introduce new players to TTRPGs, and I'm sure there are a lot of Stranger Things's fans that became great D&D players. Let's just say the five I met did not.

    • @deathsheir2035

So Simple. However, simplicity doesn't do it for me. If you did that with me, expect me having read the entire PHB cover to cover, and have already created 20 characters during each read through, to ensure I understood correctly. Any confusion would be cleared up when I talk to DM proper, and make my character proper. I have about 40 characters for Pathfinder alone, that would likely never see the light of day in a campaign because of my need to create as I read, and they having 0 input from any DM.

@@johnpatrick1647 Sorry i didn't pay attention to the last phrase of your comment.
I'll use an example: 4 kids of the main cast play d&d, when they meet a girl with psychic powers they say that she's a wizard; but she doesn't have a spell book, it's more of a sci-fi type of power (later in the serie we learn that the CIA did some experiment on her mother while she was pregnant), connection like that are frequent when the kids are on screen (especially when they talk about a monster), but that doesn't happen with the adult characthers.
I'd say that D&D is not that important in the serie's plot, but it's just my opinion
