- Australian comedian Barry Humphries, whose alter-ego, the self-aggrandizing Dame Edna Everage, died Saturday, April 22 at age 89. In this "Sunday Morning" profile that originally aired April 4, 2010, Dame Edna talks with Russ Mitchell about her celebrity (which is bigger than anyone else's), her Broadway appearances, and her "manager" (Humphries), who "resents the fact that I'm so popular." Humphries, meanwhile, discusses the rather non-PC Edna who, he reflects, is "not very nice really."

My mum loved Dame Edna, she rarely laugh at the things shes watching on tv, but she always laughed when Dame Edna was on tv. Barry was just perfect as Dame Edna, no one could do that figure better than Barry. Rest in peace Barry ❤

I was able to see Dame Edna at one of her shows in San Francisco. It was such an entertaining night. I laughed so hard. She brought people up on stage to take part in a skit. She joked and teased about American culture. It was a great experience.
I also saw her in San Francisco. I sat in the front row "reserved for friends of Kenny", using hilarious innuendo regarding her son's orientation and his many "friends" around the world. A delightful show that was much more funny than anything I've seen her do on TV. Sadly, most Americans just did not get her and she never really caught on with the people we now call MAGA Trumpers. As a San Franciscan, I enjoyed her helping us locally celebrate New Years Eve 1 year. She attempted a TV show in the USA but it flopped. The humor was much too subtle for Americans, which really tells you something about Americans since even Australians adored her.

Her Christmas special from 1987 is hilarious and available on DVD. Brilliant humor. As impromptu as it seems, every second was scripted for a seamless comedy masterpiece. She sang a wonderful Christmas tune called "It's Spooky" which she rhymed with "Matthew, Mark and Lukey!". Bear in mind that DeSantis would have her banned from Florida. Isn't it remarkable in 2023 that the GOP thinks it is OK for ONE MAN to declare what the rest of us can see and do?
