I love that you’re so organized and sooo clear. I’ve made buttermilk from all types of milk and it turned out.

Thank you for your video. I have made buttermilk with all strengths of millk, except skim. I use vinegar. It works just the same. No problems. 😊

Other types of milk, redue not only the cream, fat content, which is the health bits, natural fats,
but they add sugar to it.. bad sugars, artificial types which cause cancer, same as those soy and almond milk types..bad for you...
I just love all the information you give on saving money on products you can make at home.. much love and appreciation from Australia

You can use low fat milk. Lemon juice works better for me. I haven't tried the sour cream. Next time I will try it.

I use buttermilk to make dip with those Hidden Valley Ranch packets. It calls for of 1 cup mayo and 1 cup buttermilk, but I already substitute half the buttermilk with half a cup of sour cream.
So could I just use the milk/lemon juice buttermilk and not need any of the store-bought buttermilk? Like instead of half cup sour cream and half cup of store-bought buttermilk, use half cup sour cream and half cup milk/lemon juice buttermilk?
And I just happed to think, what about using plain yogurt mixed with the regular milk? Would I still need the lemon juice? I really only get buttermilk for making the dip, but always have sour cream and plain yogurt for other stuff, so it’ll save me money and fridge space if I don’t have to buy buttermilk at the store anymore. 😁

These are great substitutions for buttermilk, but if you'd like, you can make and keep your own supply of home cultured buttermilk on hand. When there's just a quarter to a half cup of buttermilk left in the bottle, and you'd like to make more, fill the buttermilk bottle with whole milk, stir and put lid on loosely and let it set out on the counter for 8 to 10 hours. Then refrigerate. The bit of buttermilk left in the bottle, cultures the whole milk turning it into buttermilk. When you're almost out again, repeat.

I use buttermilk powder. 1 tablespoon of powder for ever cup of milk. I mix the powder in my dry ingredients then add any milk to the rest of the recipe. I don't mix the powder to the milk cause it doesn't seem to mix in easily and powder sticks to the edges. Thank you for this as I often want to do this instead but was unsuccessful doing it with vinegar because my fried chicken gravy tasted really vinegary. I think I must of used too much!😅

I have never heard of powdered buttermilk in my 70 yrs. 😅 I guess we can probably get anything powdered. Thank you.

You can also take one half cup cultered buttermilk and add it to a quart jar. Then fill the jar up with your whole milk. Let set 24 hours on the counter with the lid set loose on the jar. Next day you have buttermilk.

This is not buttermilk. It will never be buttermilk. Buttermilk has live cultures that cause it to thicken.
