I like that Bart is self-possessed and kind enough to tell people where to look in the Bible for messages on current issues. That just seems like a really wholesome thing for an atheist and former believer to be doing. I doubt he uses the Bible anymore for comfort or to win points in debates, but he doesn’t judge others for doing so; instead he helps them find what they’re looking for. What a swell example to set.

The bible has a lot of useful information, the problem is that we were sold on the idea that it was the inerrant word of God much like the Catholics were sold on the idea of the infallibility of the Pope. This added another layer of authority & control but it's two sides of the same coin, it's government control, whether it comes from the Pope or from the King, they are in agreement with each other, the appearance of separation is just to keep us divided and fighting with each other so we will be too distracted to notice who the real enemy is. In the Tower of Babble story for example, it says that God saw that when UNITED there was nothing that people could not accomplish, so God allegedly said, I will confuse their language so that they do not understand each other, BINGO, mission accomplished! To this day, the rulers are still dividing us so that we can be more easily conquered.

    • @freddiereadie30
      @freddiereadie30 18 дней назад

      @Truth.is.winning
If people were UNITED in worshipping God or doing good to others, then it puts a positive spin on the story. So being UNITED is not necessarily a bad thing. It depends on what people's intentions are, which is subjective.
In the gospels, Jesus said that you should sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor so you can earn riches in heaven. You never see any pastor or priest doing that. Certainly not the rich people. In fact, the Pope himself is more affluent than many believers.
So the bottomline is, lessons in the Bible can be interpreted in many ways. There is no feedback mechanism from God as to whether your interpretations are correct.

The "Acts of Thomas" may contain some legendary material, but I don't think Bart can back up his assertion that Thomas' trip to India itself was legendary. There are many good reasons why Thomas may well have gone to India, since most of the St. Thomas Christians in the world live in India today.
We know that the apostles traveled as far west as Spain and that they traveled quite far to the east (Armenia, Georgia). There was commercial sea traffic to India in that day, and Thomas might well have taken one of those ships to India.

At the 10:07:30 mark, I believe Bart betrays an almost complete lack of awareness of the extremely mystic nature of Essene worship, as shown, for example, in the Thanksgiving Hymn. The Essene worshippers were emotionally transported to such a high level of ecstasy that they vividly envisioned themselves worshipping God in the heavenly throne room, beside the angels!
This Essene worship is extremely reminiscent of the extreme Christian mystical worship, for example, in the Charismatic Christian and Pentecostal Churches.

Regarding baptism by fire, the account of Enoch's ascension noted the presence of fire, (and God as being aflame with fire) in the throne room. There are some other similar ascension accounts.
This, it seems to me, is most likely to be the source of the idea of baptism with fire - - when one ascends to the highest heaven or when one enters the heavenly throne room.
The fringe idea that everyone would be burned alive in flames at the end of the world has a much weaker scriptural basis.

Bart says: "I think that the Essenes had a very physical understanding of the apocalyptic world view." This may be correct with respect to their (expected) war with Rome. However, it is incorrect with respect to the overall meaning of "apocalyptic" (i.e., ascents of Enoch, etc.), which were far more spiritual (and in some respects, Jewish gnostic) than physical.
see the writings of Gabriele Boccacini regarding the highly spiritual nature of Essenism, and how it set the stage for Christian spirituality. They were nearly one and the same. John Baptist provides the bridge between the Essenes and Jesus.

If you discard The New Testament, you might as well discard TANACH as a collection of absurd stories without any factual evidence to substantiate them. I have always found it most disingenuous that Judaism declared its adherents to be "God's Chosen People" when recorded history proved otherwise. I think it's very sad that Bart Ehrman's scholarship led him down the rabbit hole of atheism, which I believe is more absurd than even the most outrageous stories in today's "Holy Bible". I have spent my life trying to understand the Creator of everything visible and invisible, and I truly believe our Creator is infinitely merciful and eternally loving of mankind. Instead of trying to authenticate Jesus's true nature, I have found it most helpful simply to pray the prayer he taught his disciples and live each day loving God, my fellow man, and myself.😇

But now Christians actually believe Jesus is that God who ķìĺ. ĺed those children in cold blood. But it's weird because even though they do believe Jesus is that God they still hold on to the Marcian view about the God of the Old Testament unknowingly. They always separate Jesus from God of the Old Testament the first words out of a Christians mouth is that's the Old Testament we don't follow that. But they use the Old Testament to prove Jesus divinity. But it's clear all they care about is the verses they believe pertain to Jesus. They speak as if it's another God of the Old Testament and Jesus is the one who is the caring and loving God.

I always saw the personality change of God, from the Old to New Testament as God changing his tactics.
He’d tried the ‘stick’ approach, it didn’t work. So while he’s down on Earth as a human he decided to give us the ‘carrot’ approach instead. I never believed there was a good reason why Christians say that God never changes his mind when there is that as an example, as well as God realising he was wrong to flood the Earth.

Talk about the moral message of the New Testament! The success of Christianity has led to Western civilization being built on a moral foundation based on love of others. That did not exist before the New Testament because religion reflected human vanity. Mankind's inate cruelty and depravity doesn't go away because of a book, but neither does getting lost in the weeds talking about how the "story" references ancient myths and who wrote what part first.

Does anyone else has problem with one statement by Bart in first part of video; so literacy in Roman empire was 10%, from that small part was ones who knew both how to write and read, and even smaller part was ones who knew compose books. And then half of those are ones who knew and composed in Greek. Then than, in span of 2-4 centuries, hundreds of those people decided to believe in Christianity and compose books for it. Especially 4 Gospels, which would mean 4 highly educated people were writing for Christian church in same time span, aldo it was small cult. I guess it is not impossible, but kinda strange.

Bart may have erred in definitely stating that none of Jesus' early followers wrote anything down about him. Why? Because not everyone at the time was incapable of reading & writing. Some certainly were, even if they might have only written relatively brief stories about him, perhaps in the form of letters or diaries.
The fundamental error I believe Bart has committed is this: "Absence of evidence does not imply evidence of absence."
I find it highly unlikely that the words of and stories about Jesus were not written down at an early date. More likely, there were various short passages written by various followers, and these were probably collected at some point and made their way into the Q document.

Yet no remains have ever appeared of writings which could have been attributed to Jesus and later references from the NT writers suggest that he only spoke occasionally in public for 2-3 . years . It is suggested that either he could read and knew the Jewish Bible or may have simply listened to the Jewish Rabis as most Christians today derive their beliefs not from first hand knowledge of the Bible but from what they are taught from an early age. It begs the question as to why, if this religion and this God was so important for his "creation" he left it to this imperfect humankind to relay his message !

@@barnsweb52 Elohim is the plural of Eloh. IOW the gods. This is correct in as much as you don’t know what it means. In the late Bronze Age the last Hittite king married a high priestess of Canaan and she was essentially his contract lawyer. The reason he needed a high priestess is because there were 3000 gods he had to deal with, but only about 70 in the Elohim, which his wife was familiar with. Nonetheless the fact that she knew how to make concessions for a great numbers of gods that she could write contracts the did not offend people. As the last Hittite his kingdom was replaced by syroanatolian city states, most of the gods had disappeared but each city state had to deal with a variety of gods. It was pointed out in one of the letters that nearby kings wanted priests of fledgling cites to anoint them to give them authority. This is the first recognition of anointment in ANE. But it made sense, the kingship ceremony of past required a priestess of Inanna and Uruk was 5 city states away. The NeoAssyrian further developed the Covenent code for vassals, as both Israel and Judea were. Again Assyria had a high god Asshur but these were part of an older Mesopotamian pantheon. When Israel is brought in as a vassal then its god(s) become part of the Vassal Covenent. In Deu 32:8 original version as found in the DSS this process of pantheon inclusion is presented.

This is one of my favorite ridiculous passages in Matthew. The Lord said to my Lord. Why would David say that? Does anyone read the title of Psalm 110? Sometimes the Psalms are by David and sometimes there of David meaning about David. In Hebrew it is rendered as follows:
    לְדָוִ֗ד מִ֫זְמ֥וֹר
A transliteration would be "l'dahveed mizmor". Of David a psalm. This is different for example in Psalm 22 which is clearly assalm written by David. The authorship is rendered as follows:
    מִזְמ֥וֹר לְדָוִֽד
The transliteration of the Hebrew is "mizmor l'dahveed". This translates to a psalm of David meaning written by David. But even more the Hebrew words for Lord and Lord are two different words. This is such an absolute scam perpetrated by the church. Anyone can look at the Hebrew even if you don't read Hebrew a notice that the word for Lord is different in the passage. The first usage is the tetragrammaton, the holy ineffable name of God. The second is transliterated as "adonee" which means my master. So the psalmist is speaking about David God is telling David something and to the psalmist David is his Lord. Not Lord in the sense of he is a divine being but in the sense of the Old English Lord and Lady. David is the king he is therefore the earthly Lord of the psalmist. Goodness gracious this is such a clear one and yet you'll find Christians talking about this one when they try to proselytize Jews. Of course these missionaries cannot read or speak Hebrew...

It was not for me to say that to which I have no right. If I had said it, You would have known it. You know what is within myself, and I do not know what is within Yourself. Indeed, it is You who is Knower of the unseen.

The new testament was mostly written by someone name Paul it was written far after the time of Jesus. Paul was Someone who literally said I robbed other churches, taking wages of them, to do you service Corinthians 11:8 . and also said, To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law 1 Corinthians 9:20. So ya make sure that you don't follow the new testament as its for sure not a book from God. Only the Quran is trust me.,.

O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians)! Do not exceed the limits in your religion, nor say of Allah aught but the truth. The Messiah 'Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), was (no more than) a Messenger of Allah and His Word, ("Be!" - and he was) which He bestowed on Maryam (Mary) and a spirit (Ruh) created by Him; so believe in Allah and His Messengers. Say not: "Three (trinity)!" Cease! (it is) better for you. For Allah is (the only) One Ilah (God), Glory be to Him (Far Exalted is He) above having a son. To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. And Allah is All-Sufficient as a Disposer of affairs.

Have you read Spinoza? Do you understand Spinoza's God?. Spinoza understood God exists, I understand God exists and you can understand. To understand God exists you have to understand the atheist logical fallacy. Atheism is a logical fallacy that assumes God is the religious idea of the creator of the creation to conclude wrongly no creator exists because a particular idea of God doesn’t exist. Atheism is a logical fallacy that assumes God is "sky daddy" to conclude wrongly no creator exists because a particular idea of God doesn’t exist. Atheists misreason "sky daddy doesn't exist therefore god doesn’t exist, and all the arguments that point to the existence of god have to be wrong". To understand God exists you have to understand the kalam cosmological argument: what has a beginning of existence has a cause because from nothing can not be created something. Logically it is impossible the existence of an infinite number of causes, therefore an eternal first uncaused cause that created what has a beginning of existence exists. Did you understand why God exists? God exists because logically it is impossible the existence of the creation or finitude without the creator or infinitude!. If you pay attention you will realize atheists and religious people defend an idea without any arguments. The horrible reality that atheists and religious people sell doesn't exist!. To end the war the discovery that atheism is a logical fallacy has to be news. I am trying to overcome an unjust censorship. Thank you.

Spinoza believed the God of his ideas existed. He did not know i.e. have evidence beyond a reasonable doubt, that such a god existed. What you refer to as his 'understanding', simply means that he held a particular position of acceptance of a concept of his god in his mind. It doesn't mean that god actually exists, as it's still a claim to faith, as it is not falsifiable any more than spiritual snowdrops exist on Alpha Centauri.

Just cut the crap Bart. Matthew alone was in Aramaic. It was reported to have been accepted by two or three Jewish Christian sects before 40 CE. It was reported to be the collective effort of documentation by the original disciples well before 40 CE. They did not have to write it - chances are good someone volunteered to document it for them, or someone else paid for them to document it. Most of your arguments stem from what the Rabbi said - not what the Christians said. Stop your incessant giggling and get serious sometime. Onediscipletoanother

@@mjt532 You will not hear this from current 'scholars' as they depend upon 'peer review' that agrees with other peers. It's based on evidence that they dare not put together - because the evidence exposes the lie, who lied, when they lied, and why they lied. Anyone who is beholden to publishers will not tell the real truth. Much was destroyed and altered before 400 CE - starting before 100 CE by those who believed Paul, and excluding those who they were trying to destroy. See the book "Romans Proves Paul Lied". Evidence is we all have altered texts from Judaism and Christianity - it's overwhelming evidence. The book exposes Romans, covers the Sermon on the Mount from the Hebrew and Aramaic texts pre 160 CE, and the 3000 year old account of the Covenant Standards found in the Shapira scrolls. Noted are high level scholarship from Jewish scholars - Harvard and Oxford - evidence from over 100 years of archelogy to prove the Hebrew accounts are greatly mythologized.

@stephen-f9h The gospel of Matthew was either written in Aramaic or Hebrew. Even Jerome acknowledged this and said the original was still known to be in a certain library. So when was it first said that the gospel of Matthew was originally in Greek?! It's a patent lie. Those from Papias to Jerome say otherwise.
