I appreciate your putting the thunderbolt info at the beginning of the video and being so clear and thorough in your explanation. Many thanks my friend!
Hi, does anyone experience connection issues with the new Mac M1 Pro (Monterey) and the UltraStudio Rec 3G? The light of the recorder does not even start when connected (yes, with Apple thunderbolt cable), opposed to when I connect it to an "older" Mac (Intel 2019). There the light shows and I can find the recorder in the system hardware listing. But not with the brand new M1! We even called Blackmagic Design UK for support. They said they will get back to us... Any help welcome! (And yes, it's not a software problem "did you download the latest driver version"? but it's a deeper hardware issue). Thanks!!!
Ok, problem solved! I've had a hardware connection problem with M1 and BMD Recorder 3G (light not showing) so if anyone experiences this please make sure you get the RIGHT thunderbolt cable! There are different Apple thunderbolt cables (like a short "normal" one and also ones especially for monitors!!!). So we finally solved the problem but it sure was a ride! Happy streaming everyone! Thank you for this channel!
1:05 The most important part of the video XD Sad that the USB stuff is so confusing XD Got the recorder in 2020 and was sad to find out USB-C was different to thunderbolt 3 and it was not available to AMD at that time. I'm now getting the Asus Pro Art motherboard which has TB4 :D
Thanks for your in depth look into these. 3 Questions: Q1: Can the Monitor 3G be used to send a M1 Mac mini output into an atem device (i.e. Atem 2 M/E production 4k or any atem switcher)? Q2: Can the Recorder 3G be used for the vice versa send and atems program feed into a Mac and sent into zoom (as a webcam)? Q3: Could this act as a cheaper alternative to the decimator md-hx?
I can't find anywhere to calibrate the AV OUT within FCPX (not as a second monitor, but using the UltraStudio Monitor 3G). In DaVinci there's an interface to do this with DisplayCal, but what about FCPX?
As for the Monitor how is it different from an extended display for example on a Mac. Can I use and organize same as in the systems preferences for displays? Or, put it differently, if I already have e.g. two actual displays connected to my Mac via Thunderbolt can I use the BM Monitor independently from them? How is the Recorder different from an HDMI capture card? Why would I use the Recorder given that most of the capture cards in a similar price range already can do 4K (e.g. Elgato Cam Link)?
Elgato is an UVC (driver less) device, which uses processor power. For BMD devices you'll have to install the Blackmagic Desktop Video application, so your computer's processor won't suffer. Huge benefit to use BMD's.
Beautiful explanation of both! I'm an editor. I'm still confused, I want to connect my camera to my laptop to get live feed so I can edit them on spot. Which device should I go for? 🤔
Hi, thx for your video, i've got a question about the ultraStudio : Is it possible to use 2 or more device at the same time on one computer ? Thanks for your answer. Cheers
For monitor 3g, When use final cut pro x.Is it has any audio delay issue? Example video and audio sync on computer but delay on tv when your play black. Thank's.
I am actually looking for a small recorder that I can bring on my shoots to record the PowerPoint screen, when I just bring my cameras and not my entire Atem Mini studio setup. This thing will not record directly to a T5 or T7 SSD, right? Which recorder should I get instead?
Does it work with thunderbolt 4? I would think so , but not getting any reaction from my devices with a new thndrblt 4 cable, computer does recognize the blackmagic in system report though
Please can you suggest another alternative for the black magic studio monitor, that I can use to output video from my Vmix, My laptop is USB C not thunderbolt
thanks for such a great content.... need your advice since my PC has only USB -C only is there a way to use this ultra monitor 3G please let me know it would be a great help...
I am a bit curious... I am thinking of getting something like this to capture old VHS tapes. But.. the SDI input.. does it accept regular SD Composite or would I need to get something else? I understand that I would need to capture the audio portion separately, but can it handle the video? I am just looking for something a bit more quality than all those Magix Video savers and the likes. Preferably I'd like to fibd something that gives an image that is as untouched as possible, (so no deinterlacing and crushed colors and the likes) in case I want to do restoration or something.
Very thanks for the video! A question: in your opinion is it also compatible with Thunderbolt 2? That is, can it also be used with old Macs that have that peripheral, obviously with a Thunderbolt 3 -> Thunderbolt 2 adapter?
hi! thanks for this video, does this monitor device works with "decklink" outputs? (meaning, when I use obs and decklink outputs) can I set this monitor device as a decklink output?. thank you!
What settings would you use on your camera while linking to it? I'm using a Sony camera and was interested into looking at something like the UltraStudio Recorder to link to OBS. I'm a newbie in using cameras, but would like to start using it with OBS and DSLR. Hopefully you can give some advice :)
The older version of BM Mini Recorder, if you accidently pull the Thunderbolt, SDI or HDMI cable out during a stream, good luck reconnecting it in OBS or Wirecast without restarting those programs. You would have to restart your livestream too. I hope they fixed that in the newer BM Mini Recorder.
Interesting. I also hope that is not the case. Seems to work just fine with vMix when you plug/unplug the HDMI connection though I didn’t try the Thunerbolt connection. I recommend taping all cables, devices and connections!
@@heretorecord Thank you for replying. I do tape it down. People accidently bump into things. Love the Atem Mini and your channel. No one has really showed a "how to" video workflow with the Atem Mini Pro ISO. They mention the outputs but don't explain or show what they can do and if you use an output, the outputs are multifunctional but you can lose a function. Example: USB-C should be used to record every ISO. You lose the webcam function if you do this but the usb c webcam quality is not as good as an HDMI webcam source going through a capture card on a computer (mention good capture cards. Hopefully one that does 10bit). Why should one use the HDMI output for streaming? (better video quality). Finally, if you want to stream, you can use ethernet, show examples (no one is showing proper demos on youtube.) RTMP for other websites or other streaming platforms. Layman's question for viewers, does the ethernet also send video and audio signals via ethernet? Answer the question for them.
I hear you - there is always someone around to knock things! And thanks for the kind words about the videos :D I will do my best to make more content on this stuff!
Hi, thanks for nice review. Have a question about resolution. How Monitor 3G works with 4k external monitor via HDMI. The output screen shows only small FHD window? Or maybe this device allows to scale FHD signal to full 4k view?
I have this question too. I am confused about why the device is called a "Recorder", as if it can capture video, when its use seems to be for live streaming (?) according to this video.
The recorder is actually for bringing sources into the computer, the monitor is for bringing sources out of the computer. So you could just record the output of the monitor. The recorder device only has inputs.
Would I be able to use the USBC from my atem extreme as a third output using the studio 3G? I need a third OUTput for my situation. A clean feed to my crèche, a single channel feed to my ninja for focus and a multi view feed to my monitor. Any suggestions?
is the old mini recorder (without 3g )modle is not working with the new thunderbolt4 mac? Do you know anything about it? I connect it with the adapter ,it shows in the system preference of thunderbolt deviece ,but did not show in the desktop video set up .
Can you use the Mini Monitor for any screen resolution? I have an older version UltraStudio Mini Monitor. Im looking to use it with a QHD monitor. Im a bit confused bc I thought these came in res HD - 4K but Im not seeing diff versions on the BMD site... Thanks so much for the setup video, so helpful
Will this device all i need to do hdr grading in davinci. Further I am using MacBook pro m1 pro machine which has Thunderbolt 4 port. Will Thunderbolt 3 cable work with my laptop. Thanks
Hi - the UltraStudio Monitor 3G and the UltraStudio Recorder 3G - are not working with Apple M1 and macOS Big Sur Verion 11.1 - i bought both - and i cannot use it so far. 2021-01-09 - Even the new Desktop Video 12.0 Beta 1 - "Adds support for M1 powered Macs for Thunderbolt UltraStudio models." is not working.
I have the UltraStudio Monitor 3G, it work fine with my Mac mini M1, you will need to change the security settings for "App Store and identified developers"
I seem to get UltraStudo Recorder 3G input to Desktop Video Setup (via Ursa Mini Pro 4.8K) but no signals coming into platforms like OBS, Zoom or BlackMagic Media Express. I do see option for it for "device" but no video image. Is something being done wrong?
Hi, John. I bought a ultrasound recorder 3G, and tried to connect to my macbook pro 16”, but I couldn’t. it was not detected. I used thunderbolt 3 cable with Blackmagic Converter Setup program ver. 7.4.1. The sign was "No converter found" Also I couldn’t find Desktop Video Setup program what you used. How can I resolve this?
I downloaded the desktop video software from the blackmagic site, but haven’t actually installed it yet. Is this software still necessary if I’m just using the monitor 3G for a clean feen into my external grading monitor for color grading? This is my first time using such device. I only got it because people on the forums were telling me I needed something like it for “proper” color grading. But so far this is the only video or information on actually using it.
5:04 it seems there's a bit of delay when you scroll through the footage. That's a key point to a film editor, who needs to plow through hours of footage on a daily basis. Would you say the delay is as pronounced as it seems to be in this video? Thanks in advance!
I'm an editor and haven't used these, but have used similar Blackmagic projects. I would assume that the issue is more with the Ninja than the Ultrastudio. Those are meant to record camera feeds; not for playback. I assume that an actual TV with a low latency would be fine.
Can I use only the recorder in combination with a hdmi camera (a7iii) and input the signal into „resolve live“ for live color grading and put the video signal out into ob’s? Would be great, to get the same results as in my videos for livestreaming 🙏
Hello, I have a recorder 3G connected to a MacBook 2020 OS Catalina. Real problems with audio - either non existent, or terrible feedback and echo. Connects as you have described with correct settings. But when I try to put I into OBS, I get this audio issue. I tried ishowu but it just made it worse. Thaks. Tim Lewis
If you're editing 4K in Premier Pro, and you only have an HD (HDMI) edit monitor - can you 'scale down' your signal? So, in other words, edit in 4K, and get 1920x1080 playback on your monitor?
I understood that I needed a tb3 connector on the computer. But what about the cable? Will I must use a thunderbolt 3 cable for the connection or it will work with a usb-c cable too?
Thanks for the good information and clean explanations. Have to ask a doubt. Does the UltraStudio Recorder 3G can be used to connect a PC Video out (HDMI) to an iMac 2020 using Thunderbolt 3 and just view the PC display in the iMac Screen. No need to record. Just view the PC screen without any latency. Is there any software to do that ( other than OBS). Need to get the display out of the PC in the iMac and view in full screen. Please clarify.
In theory you could do that with a capture software like the Blackmagic Media Express though I don’t think you can go full screen without lots of UI in the way. And you will see some delay due to the software.
Thanks for you video. How do I record audio coming from my RME UC to sync with picture coming from my Datavideo DAC45? Using Blackmagic Media Express it captures the video and not the audio. Mac Mini M1 is my computer. QuickTime does not accept there UltraStudio Recorder 3G as a camera source nor does Final Cut Pro. If I can get Media Express to record audio, the Ultreastudio Recorder 3g will be useful. Otherwise it is not for my project.
Okay so the recorder can record from a source (tv monitor etc) and the monitor 3g sends out footage to view on a source (tv monitor etc)? I know this is dumb but I am suddenly confused
Nice, thank you. So with the monitor 3g you can ether use the sdi OR hdmi at a time, not both simultaniously right? And slightly off topic: the mc biderectional can split the signal to both, right?
I have read in several forums that the Monitor 3G is necessary to get a reliable/trustworthy signal for monitoring in color correction, as opposed to just using the Mac's HDMI output on a second monitor. People say I can't trust my mac's HDMI output form Da Vinci, that I need the Monitor 3G, at least. What can you say about this topic?
Another great, helpful video John. Quick question - does the Recorder use the Webcam standard so that the input source appears to software such as Zoom, Skype, Meet etc., as a webcam?
As far as I know it would not be considered a webcam nor does it show up as one. However is will still work in certain software (I tested with zoom and it worked). However I didn’t get a chance to get it working with Skype or Meet. I will give it a go when I get a chance though!
Besides the sdi input what would be the reason to buy the recorder versus any other hdmi to usb converter from different suppliers they can get as cheap as 20 euros
The data speed of a Thunderbolt 3 connection can, in theory, out-perform a 20 euro cheap device. For that reason I would spend the extra cash on these devices. Also over the years I have used both the HDMI and the SDI port on my previous models for all sorts of gigs so the flexibility of having both ports is a big plus. They are also built well and will often get updates for stability and features. But it’s of course an option to grab a 20 euro device and see how well it works!
Why do i need the monitor 3G? What'd the difference to connecting a monitor directly to the computer? We have both, a monitor which has an Thunderbolt 3 input, so i can connect our Imac Pro directly with a TB3 cable, and a Monitor which has only HDMI, but we connected it with a TB3 to HDMI adapter. In resolve, i can output the video clean feed to one of those monitors. Why do i need the BM monitor 3G? :)
One of the best reasons it the SDI connection. This way you can easily integrate it with other AV tech that is SDI based. It also tends to mean there are no OS GUI issues which are common with HDMI outputs. You can accidentally show a desktop that way which isn't always so helpful on a professional live stream or similar. Though if you are happy with HDMI then stick with it for sure!
When outputting out of the monitor from a livestream, do you have any issues? Like lag or audio sync/clipping? With the original monitor I had those issues all the time (potentially because I was adapting it from thunderbolt 2 -> 3)
@@heretorecord would be interesting to hear. my imac is loaded so it shouldn't be the cause at all. if i get my monitor soon (backordered) i'll check forsure. Thanks for your content!
You should have zero delay and stutter even with the old one via thunderbolt 2. i as well had to go from thunderbolt 2 to 3 into my PC laptop and i had no issues. This sounds like a resource or a driver issue. i would try resetting your thunderbolt drivers as well as the BMD ones. However, I've never tried on a mac. My workflow is all PC so not sure if Macs have issues.
In the video you mention there is no point in buying if your mac doesn't have thunderbolt 3? Why is it not possible to use a thunderbolt 3 to an older thunderbolt socket adapter? will it not work? or have any drawbacks?
@@heretorecord not aware of any adapters? They are all over Amazon and of course apples own one! www.apple.com/uk/shop/product/MMEL2ZM/A/thunderbolt-3-usb-c-to-thunderbolt-2-adapter
it has been always fascinating me how many external audio interfaces for music and how few of video interfaces. I guess, video channel must be faster and closer to the processor and there is no point to through it on usb.
I was wondering if the monitor 3g was configurable for output frame rate... I am using Vmix and need to send an hdmi out signal to a broadcast channel that needs the hdmi signal to be exactly 720p 59.94. right now, my computer monitor sends out the whole back end of vmix to the broadcast, so I need to isolate the feed (clean). I was originally going to output it to an external monitor with an hdmi output, but thought this would be higher quality. any thoughts on this, as you did mention Vmix..
Unless I am mistaken, you can configure the output size/framerate within the 'External' output settings of vMix. You can also turn off any overlays within the 'Output' settings of vMix.
Hi, Thanks for the great video. I was told by a BM reseller that TB3 should work with USB-C port as they are compatible, just bit slower?? Please advise.
I don’t believe that would work. And it certainly would not work well even if it does work. The newer device works at a higher bandwidth that the older ports are not capable of.
Hi,Sir. I bought a ultrasound recorder 3G, and tried to connect to my lenovo y540”, but I couldn’t. it was not detected. nice explaination thanks..... i have one thing to ask hope u will reply my comment if i connect ultrastudio recorder 3g to computer/laptop can i see live in davinci resolve software as live timeline.....if so can we do live color grade with that image signal...
You need to install Desktop Video from the Blackmagic website. Go to their support page and enter the name of the product, then scroll down for the latest download!
Hey dude, love your content! I am curious to how you have built up your client base. There are not many companies offering live switching & streaming in my area and I am trying to push into the market. Having a relatively good amount of success lately but still trying to grow. Keen to hear your experiences/ thoughts
Hey - good question. Over the years it’s been a whole range of things like cold-emails, word of mouth, friend of friend etc. It’s a bit of a pot luck at times but I find being nice, professional and having a good output always works!
Deeply unfortunate that its only tb3 compatible, was hoping that I could use the recorder as a SDI input so I could use davinci as a field scope for color/exposure correcting cameras without a full monitoring rack, but I don’t have anything with tb3 ports.
I appreciate your putting the thunderbolt info at the beginning of the video and being so clear and thorough in your explanation. Many thanks my friend!
I appreciate your being efficient with your time and mine.

Can I use both on the same computer? I just need 1 capture device and 1 monitor, and it's cheaper than the decklink duo...
So long as you have enough ports, you should be able to use both at the same time
If you're editing 4K in Premier Pro, and you only have an HD (HDMI) edit monitor - can you 'scale down' your signal? So, in other words, edit in 4K, and get 1920x1080 playback on your monitor?
I have a digital camera / Coolpix L110 Nikon. It's not a DSLR cam. Is-it possible to use it to live stream with?
I understood that I needed a tb3 connector on the computer. But what about the cable? Will I must use a thunderbolt 3 cable for the connection or it will work with a usb-c cable too?
You’ll need a thunderbolt cable too
Thanks for the good information and clean explanations.
@@heretorecord Thank you for the quick and clear reply.
Absolutely! You got it right.
Thank you. What cam and lens are you using on this video?
That is the Blackmagic PCC4K - Not sure of the lens though
You got Big Sur?
Hi, can you confirm if there are severe audio issues with OBS and the 3G Mini Recorder? There is a thread in OBS forums about that. Best regards,
Hey man, could you make a video about the HDR capabilities of the device for color grading ? Thanks !
I actually don't do any HDR in my workflow so I might be out of my depth showing it off!
you can do HDR at 10 bit 1080 max on 3G SDI speeds
Nice, thank you.
So with the monitor 3g you can ether use the sdi OR hdmi at a time, not both simultaniously right? And slightly off topic: the mc biderectional can split the signal to both, right?
Yes, you can use only SDI or HDMI at a time. And yes, the bidirectional can split to HDMI and SDI from SDI or HDMI.
Yes and yes!
I have unfortunately sent the devices back so I cannot be sure about that one
So which one do I need when going from a camera like an arri to my MacBook Pro? The recorder?
Recorder when bringing a signal into a computer, Monitor when bringing a signal out from a computer.
Hi thank for sharing. Would the recorder work with a Panasonic Lumix CMD-G6 and OBS for streaming? Thank you
If that has HDMI or SDI out then it should work as expected!
Can you output hdr video?
I’d have to give it a go to be sure but perhaps it was an issue before. Lag can often mean the computer is not up to the task though
@@heretorecord would be interesting to hear. my imac is loaded so it shouldn't be the cause at all. if i get my monitor soon (backordered) i'll check forsure. Thanks for your content!
Let me know how it goes - and thanks!
As the device is built for TB3 I cannot imagine that it would be reliable with TB2 due to speed limitations. I also am not aware of any adapters
@@heretorecord not aware of any adapters? They are all over Amazon and of course apples own one! www.apple.com/uk/shop/product/MMEL2ZM/A/thunderbolt-3-usb-c-to-thunderbolt-2-adapter
Can i connect output thunderbolt to windows laptop using adapter?
The computer will need a thunderbolt port, otherwise this device will not work.
it has been always fascinating me how many external audio interfaces for music and how few of video interfaces. I guess, video channel must be faster and closer to the processor and there is no point to through it on usb.
Might have missed a similar question, but for the ultra studio monitor, can the output be sent through both hdmi and sdi to 2 different monitors?
I'm not sure and I have just sent them back so I cannot give it a go :(
Is the monitor 3G only capable of outputting FCPX or can I also output youtube, movies, tv shows etc to my hdmi tv?
It is a dedicated hardware device that should be utilised by software on the computer. So out of the box, those things are not possible.
Can you stream playbacks from camera (for example: remote production for clients)?
I think you’ll need a few more pieces of gear to make that happen
Hi, Thanks for the great video. I was told by a BM reseller that TB3 should work with USB-C port as they are compatible, just bit slower?? Please advise.
I don’t have the units anymore but I don’t quite understand how that would work.
Can u use tb2 to tb3 adapter if you gave older macs? Thanks
I don’t believe that would work. And it certainly would not work well even if it does work. The newer device works at a higher bandwidth that the older ports are not capable of.
Is the quality better then the USB out of the Atem Mini?
I have not tried it but that is very likely the case. The USB of the ATEM is heavily compressed.
@@heretorecord Thanks. Can OBS handle this?
Yes it should show up just fine!
Hi John, could I use the ultrastudio monitor with Wirecast feeding into the hyperdeck studio mini?
I don’t see why not, best to check with Wirecast that they support the device though
what if i connect a laptop to a monitor to the recorder then put it back into the laptop
I’m pretty certain the Earth would implode 🧐
Hi,Sir. I bought a ultrasound recorder 3G, and tried to connect to my lenovo y540”,
but I couldn’t. it was not detected. I used thunderbolt 3 cable with Blackmagic Converter Setup
The sign was "No converter found" Asking for window 10 update driver..Also I couldn’t find Desktop Video Setup program what you used. How can I resolve this?
Are you 100% sure the connection on your laptop is Thunderbolt? I was not able to check online
@@heretorecord fix use -c problem in window..i thing asking driver ?
What problem, know means ...plz text me
nice explaination thanks..... i have one thing to ask hope u will reply my comment if i connect ultrastudio recorder 3g to computer/laptop can i see live in davinci resolve software as live timeline.....if so can we do live color grade with that image signal...
I cannot say for you as I no longer have the device in hand, I would hope that would work though!
Aww, you've missed the renaming feature in Desktop Video Setup !
Damn! Important one :)
Does it works if I have thunderbolt 4?
Yes I believe Thunderbolt 4 is backwards compatible
Have you tried using the Ultrastudio Monitor as a VTR solution to play video clips?
I have not, though I have used the UltraStudio HD Mini to do that through vMix. Worked nicely and I suspect the Monitor 3G would work just as well!
What is the alternative for ultrostudio mini recorder ????
Imogen, magewell and avmatrix all make USB capture devices
are you able to use the (ultrastudio recorder 3G) and select it in davinci resolve live?
I have not tried, but I would hope so!
Is there a way to get a "program" output to a display monitor from the ATEM Mini Pro?
There is not. These are Thunderbolt devices and the connection on an ATEM Mini Pro is USB-3.
Some how I dont have HDMI audio coming into the OBS. I didn't have this problem when connected with my old camera via SDI. Anyone?
I’m using the recorder with a Apple thunderbolt cable and I’m having no luck with a signal in OBS. Any tips?
Is there a driver for these things?
Thanks legend! I believe the being nice and professional is what pushes the business the most hey! Keep it up. Cheers for your reply :)
Deeply unfortunate that its only tb3 compatible, was hoping that I could use the recorder as a SDI input so I could use davinci as a field scope for color/exposure correcting cameras without a full monitoring rack, but I don’t have anything with tb3 ports.
I've just seen a video where the guy downloaded 'the thunderbolt driver and simply plugged it in to his USB port of his windows PC.
One question for 3G monitor, can I connection to iPad Pro for screen out put !?
I don’t believe that would work, no.
@@heretorecord many thanks
Hi, If my Mac is Thunderbolt 2 and I buy an adapter (TB2 to TB3), will the Monitor 3G model work with an External Monitor?
Does such an adapter exist? I know you can get TB2 to TB3 but that would be for bringing older TB2 gear into TB3 computers.
just get the old version of the mini monitor used and it will do the job, it comes with TB2
