Hi, I have done this work with love for all of you to enjoy all music lovers that time. At no time have made nonprofit. I try not to infringe copyright
I graduated High school June 1959 and bought my first car a 1949 Chevy that needed some work !!! I painted it a Lincoln seascape blue and named the car "MR BLUE" after this song, that was 63 years ago and still have the original 45 RPM record also !!! man how time flies when you are having fun !!!
Ahhh! Naming cars. . . . I remember when cars had enough personality that they had, (earned), names. In my case I had cars like: The "Cherry Bomb" - a bright red VW beetle with a CB antenna sticking out of the top. The "Motley Crew ", (pun intended!) - another VW beetle that was assembled from parts from many different model years, and you needed to know the "year" of the part you wanted when you went to buy a replacement. Along with other, equally interesting cars that I owned from back then that had a sense of character and personality. Now they're just computers on wheels. They aren't bad, they work well, and the computer assistance is a good thing, but it seems we lost something along the way. . . I stopped naming my cars when they started going electronic.
All these comments are probably written by people older than me as I am just about to turn 14 years old, but this is definitely one of my favorite songs. It is so beautiful and relaxing
Nothing like listening to this song on a warm summers evening while seated on the bench seat of my 1953 Buick Special 4 door...with my arm around my best girl. The song mingles with the music of the crickets and cicadas. The only light comes from the soft glow of the radio dial and dashboard...soft light, not the harsh light on today's cars. At that one moment, everything was perfect...everything was safe...everything was exactly the way it should be...everything was right with the world.
Yes it was !!!! Summer of 59 dating my now wife of 60 years listening to the fleetwoods in my 1949 Chevy !!!! Things were right then.......an then things went all to hell !!!
Eight Dislikes (at the time of posting), I accept that everybody's entitled to their own opinion, but what's there to dislike about this great recording. Give me a break !
My favorite Olympia, Washington Trio, Led by Mr Gary Troxel with Gretchen Christopher and Barbara Ellis. The Fleetwoods were America's number 1 artist during 1959 with two smash hits. Come Softly To Me and Mr Blue. God bless the Fleetwoods. Gary is still going strong with two other ladies as the Fleetwoods.
I live in Olympia and just heard this song on Cool Bobby B's Doo-Wop Stop show....June 2, 2024 on SiriusXM. At least something good came out of Olympia.
Beautiful melody. This song together with "Come Softly to Me" were huge hits for this group in the first half of 1959 both of which went to # 1. The two back up singers Gretchen and Barbara not only have angelic voices they're drop dead gorgeous!
Simply one of the sweetest songs ever recorded! Incidentally, the beautiful guitar intro was by session guitarist Roy Lanham - who just passed away a couple years ago.
Thanks I'm going to have to see what else he did I'm a retired guitarist and noticed how fitting his intro passages set the feel of the song ! Cheers !
So hauntingly stunning…..two classy beautiful women and a truly handsome young man with a song that to me is the equivalent of listening to ripples in a soft flowing brook on a moonlit summers night…..it’s just so unbelievably pretty especially compared to any of the mind numbing horrific garbage that is called music today.
This came out as I began Fullerton High in Nebraska. All school dances playes Mr. Blue as the last song. The paired up couples melted together while us wallflowers leaned against the wall in an ecstacy of loneliness. 6 decades and 55 years of married love later, again the song is beautful and makes me feel lonely again.
The fact that the lead singer (who has a WONDERFUL voice) seems a little uncomfortable and self-conscious being on camera actually makes the song even sweeter and more charming. I wonder how old they are here. There is another American Bandstand clip of their other huge hit, Come Softly to Me, on RUclips as well, and he has the same quality in that video. And it makes the performance even more appealing on that tune as well. Cause he just seems like some regular guy with a broken heart. The young women seems more comfortable and confident here than they do on Come Softly to Me. Both recordings are just so beautiful and perfect--two of my favorite singles of all time.
Always liked this song as a kid. Sometimes, it helps to wallow in a bit of sadness, to realize how lucky we are. Pretty girls harmonizing don't hurt, either!
I was 11, going on 12, when this second hit of the Fleetwoods played on my transistor radio, as I lay in bed at night. Sweet harmony of the women with the male lead. Oh, the memories of the girls I knew and had crushes on. So long ago.
I had the pleasure of meeting Gretchen Christopher (L) as a teenager at James Denman Junior High School in San Francisco, during the mid 60s. She was married to my Homeroom Teacher. She was amazing...and so friendly to one who had such a boyhood crush on her. Have numerous autographed photos she presented to me one morning, in class, when sh stopped in to see hime. She now lives in Seattle performing Jazz, and at times still singing some of her Fleetwood's hits
As a 13 year old in Seattle I remember being so proud when the local group, the Fleetwoods burst onto the national scene with "Come Softly to Me" after watching (and loving) all those east coast groups for the previous three years. Lead singer Gary Troxel made news decades later when he petitioned the Supreme Court to grant "grandparents rights" to grandparents who wanted to be able to see their grandkids in spite of their own childrens' refusals. The court ruled and he lost.
My parents named my dog from this song, his name was Blue, Mr Blue. I got news 2 days ago that he died, rest in peace, one of my best friends out there, this song brought me to tears
Gary resembles a rookie bond trader thrust into the studio and before the cameras - but with a voice and a sense of timing. The trio's lack of flash and drama was refreshing way back in the days of personality and screaming fans.
I was thinking the same and how his calm presence and hands at his sides adds to the sad style of the song and the head movements to the left and right
I'm 58 years old and into Sabbath, Floyd, Zeppelin, Tool, Deftones, Rage, etc. HOWEVER This song is Totally Awesome and brings a sense of peace and Serenity to my Soul. Guess there's something wrong with me but don't care cause I Absolutely Love This!! Is there something wrong with me?? Others think so cause of my musical background, others think I'm not supposed to like this but yet I do!!
I heard them when I was growing up and I heard them when I grew old. They're a great trio. Love listening to them sing this song. They were tops in an era of Do-Wop.

So many people justifiably rave about the vocal harmonies in this (and other Fleetwoods songs) but credit is also due to the "hidden" Instrumentalist backing up the singers. The musicians cradled the vocalists with just the right amount of sound... but never too much. Make note of the horn (perhaps a Flügel horn?) playing tasteful lines in support of those lovely singing voices. This beauty has been lost to time.
I was 13 when this, and many more of their wonderful songs, came out. Thankfully their Legacy has been preserved. Right now memories are flooding me. Thank you.

Dont be sad that this era of music is gone, be glad it happened.
I am glad!
And even gladder that it is on tape for us to hear!

You're right Colin. Why would they even bother listening?
They just want attention.
Obviously the dislikes are from Mars where they don't have good music.
They tought it was a hip hop or c*rab !!
It lacks the crotch-grabbing they expected.
