Fresh natural baits are hard to be beat. Buuuut when you can't get natural fresh baits store bought baits chicken breast, liver ect is a nice alternative. Don't always catch fish on them but I did catch my pb 40lb blue on chicken breast and anise on the KasKaskia River.
@@2strokin70 what type of chicken breast are you using? Frozen, thin stew type breast? Bone in breast? I prefer the huge cheap kind thats really thick and just cut it into chunks. Frozen breast I seem to loose more of due to the freezing and unfreezing weakens the meat it seems like. Don't get me wrong Will still work but not as good as ones in clear packaged non frozen..also I use eagle claw sea circle hooks. 1/0 up 6/0 seems to hold up nicely on those style of hooks.
I'm a little confused how couldn't you get natural bait... I'm assuming you live in the us sunfish/bluegill are overpopulated in a lot of places... I guess if you go to the water after 7pm when sunfish come down

To keep the liver on I took old electric cord stripped it and use a strand about 6" long. Put one end through eye of hook twist it and wrap it around liver. Works great

Man I laughed all the way through the video. I'm so used to watching dave pull in thirty to forty pound fish It was suddenly like watching myself fishing. Here in my area, south east texas a box of two to three pound catfish is considered a good days catch. Over my nearly 70 years of fishing I've tried shad ( works fairly well in some lakes and not at all on others), blood bait ( after being in the water awhile attracts lots of small channel cats), live minnows ( catchs the occasional cat), liver ( chicken is too soft but beef liver is tougher although it should be fished on a small tremble hook), canadian night crawlers ( works very well much of the time), cut bait ( occasion fish), gizzards (fantastic trot line bait if you want a full line of snapping turtles, ask me how I know), my normal is shrimp(unshelled for salt water, always shelled for fresh, you're better off holding the rod rather than sitting it down as each strike will lose the bait, fresh is good but old orange and smelly shrimp works well too). I've never tried chicken but I have some marinating in the fridge with jello and garlic. Now all I need is a warm enough day to try it.
In a small pond I catfish in I have way better luck with chicken liver over chicken breast and cut bait ( sunfish and shad) and very little luck on night crawlers.
Many times when I’m in shallow back creeks I’ll use liver on a 2/0 hook. Even if I don’t catch anything on it it keeps turtles away from my other baits.
I’ve caught a 15lb blue on a piece of chicken gizzard that was just 6’ from a live bluegill but that was certainly the exception and not the rule. I’ve not had that much luck on it so I’ve quite trying it.
In south Texas, we used to bring shrimp and mullet back from our saltwater trips with us for catfishing in the rivers and lakes. The shrimp caught the numbers but the cut mullet caught the better sizes. I am in Tennessee now, and came here smack dag in the middle of the spawn.
Hey Dave, if your local laws allow, try using a small blue or channel (pound or less) for large flathead bait. Snip the fins before putting it out as bait. Thanks buddy, I enjoy your channel.

Yep, you can't even find chicken gizzards anymore. The machines they use to process them ruins the gizzards. Nothing left but the outer connective tissue. Tears the actual gizzard muscle clean up. Chicken Hearts are the key Dave. Meaty, stays on, If you could get some Turkey Hearts or even some ostrich hearts you would be non stop action.

Put you chicken liver in a piece of panty hose cut in squares so they can be tied up. Piece of liver last all day. Still let's the liver scent out. Doesn't stop them from biting or getting hooked. Works great!!

I know you threw them out , but I love chicken livers for water size fish but under a bobber Seem to miss less fish when I fish them that way But you are right, they don’t stay on hooks well if the rod is just sitting in a rod holder I like your content , appreciate your video bud Keep it up
I'm nowhere near the fisherman you are, but in my experience chicken liver will get hit, but then it is gone. You can put it in some cheese cloth or nylons, but that is a pain in the ass. I've liked cheese/dip/stink baits, but I use more shad now. Last year was the first time I tried to get some skipjack, and failed. I've caught a few over the last couple of days but at this rate it'll be pretty hard to stay in bait. In the spring here I can load up on shad for the year at the lake spillway. Then there are always bream live/cut bait or whatever else will bite a small hook. We have some shiners but I haven't been able to catch them in numbers. Might try chumming them some soon. Working on improving my skipjack game. I'm limited somewhat by only having a small canoe. Never caught any from shore around here, though I should be able to at the big dam on Ar. river. I don't know why but I've never done much good with anything there unless I get in a boat and go out the wall between the gates and lock. Thanks for all the tips Dave. FYI, gizzards are too good to eat to waste as bait. Shrimp are too good and too expensive.
Best way I've found to keep liver on a hook is pantyhose. Liver is cheap and effective. Dollar store pantyhose works wonders. Wrap it up good and pass the hook through so it hangs off and the hook goes through both ends of your wrap, catching some meat. Or use a treble, pantyhose helps there too. Caught a white bass, a yellow bass, and a largemouth one night on it while catfishing. Got a haul of eater channels too. Almost anything will eat it, which can be a problem sometimes, especially with turtles. It's hard to beat for the price unless you get your bait for free. Good luck out there.

Use chicken liver with treble hook and swivel. Remove Treble from swivel and put Shank through liver resting on treble points. Then clip back onto swivel. 😁👌
Hook your chicken liver upto the eye of the hook shank and wrap with 8-10 inches of brown or red thread. Don't break the membrane of the liver. If done right you can reuse liver 2-3 times.

Seems to me the best bait for any fish is the natural diet of the fish . Catch one and cut open its stomach and have a look . What I find is what I use . Sometimes it changes and sometimes the fish just don't bite ! Not often though .
When u use the chicken liver buy a spool of red sewing string pull about shoulder length out worth of string and just start wrapping the chicken liver u won't have to tie any knots been using chicken liver for about 10 yrs now works great and u can cast it out and the bait never comes off and it's alot harder for them.to steal it from ya!!
Beef liver works for me here. We've just hot channels and bullheads. I marinate it in sardine oil left over after I eat sardines. A company called Thundermist Lures now sells Catch a Cat bait sacks to keep bait on your hook. They look like a red tea bag with a draw string, come in various sizes.
Little trick for chicken liver....cut out a square of panty hose, wrap it around some liver and tie the corners together. The juices are still able to get through the panty hose and it won't fall off the hook that easily

so i have seen people use jello and chicken breast regular chicken breast and kool-aid and hotdogs plain chicken works just as well sometimes but how about soaking the chicken brest in the chicken liver blood bet money that would make a great bait!!
You know when we where younger and used chicken livers we put then in pantyhose and you could get it off the hook and every once in a while we could dip it back in the juice. Great content brother thanks.
Put the chicken liver in panty hose; tie one end off, put the liver in the hose, and hook the rest of the hose over fishing hook. Make sure to impale the hook through the middle of the liver & hose to secure the bait. It won’t come off then.
When we use chicken liver we use an old pair of womens nylons just cut a square out wrap the chicken liver in it and weave the hook through it. It helps keep it on there in the river current and the cats will still bite it.
Marinade that chicken in vegetable oil or some other kind of cooking oil for a day or so in the fridge before using it. Seems to do better. I think them Cats like that oily bait.

They produce rod and reel brand shrimp for fishing it is much cheaper than normal fantail

Used those, and medical mesh sleeve. On its own it 1 hit an rebait

so i have seen people use jello and chicken breast regular chicken breast and kool-aid and hotdogs plain chicken works just as well sometimes but how about soaking the chicken brest in the chicken liver blood bet money that would make a great bait!!
You know when we where younger and used chicken livers we put then in pantyhose and you could get it off the hook and every once in a while we could dip it back in the juice. Great content brother thanks.

Dave use some elastic string to wrap around the chicken liver on the hook ,it’ll stay on pretty good or wrap in pantyhose.

Put the chicken liver in panty hose; tie one end off, put the liver in the hose, and hook the rest of the hose over fishing hook. Make sure to impale the hook through the middle of the liver & hose to secure the bait. It won’t come off then.
Put shrimp and chicken liver in a square piece of womens hose hook four corners in hook itll stay on really good..
Put liver on the hook. Wrap elastic thread around the liver and hook. Keeps the liver on the hook. Been doin this many years.
Don't waste the gizzards on the fish, coat them in flour, cup of oil in a frying pan and fry them up.
Are you thinking about all them catfish you could have caught if you have used chicken thighs?

small piece of panty hose will hold the liver on the hook. marinade the liver over night in garlic ... turkey liver stays on the hook better
Have to use alot of chicken liver in a big piece of panty hose. It will catch big cats that way
When we use chicken liver we use an old pair of womens nylons just cut a square out wrap the chicken liver in it and weave the hook through it. It helps keep it on there in the river current and the cats will still bite it.
Marinade that chicken in vegetable oil or some other kind of cooking oil for a day or so in the fridge before using it. Seems to do better. I think them Cats like that oily bait.
Hey Dave I heard you have trouble keeping chicken liver on the hook. Have you tried using a piece of pantyhose to put the liver in then hook it on the hook.

The best way to keep chicken liver on ur hook. Is by taking some panty hose and tie it up with the liver and it will be hard as hell to get off ur hook
