The one thing that always excited me about FF games when I was a kid when seeing others play it (didn't have a console) was the summoning of huge, badass monsters that did crazy attacks.
Naturally I picked SMN as my first class and mained it but until Endwalker I never really clicked with it. Sure the Bahamut phase (and Phoenix phase later when they introduced it) were the highlights of the rotation but it never felt like the thing I fell in love with as a kid.
Now that Endwalker Summoner is here I couldn't be happier with it. Finally, FINALLY it feels like you are playing a summoner where your main damage comes from your summons.

As a still-kinda-salty former 5.x SMN main, I appreciate that a lot of people like new SMN, including a lot of content creators. I just find it frustrating that there doesn't seem to be a voice in the community representing the people whose main job and unique playstyle niche was taken from them.
And not to mention was replaced with a playstyle that I feel can largely be found in other jobs, just with an (admittedly great) summoner ascetic

I relate to this. I liked that the egis pre shadowbringers had 4 moves. Yes, it was a lot of micromanaging to coordinate contagion, radiant shield, play tank-lite, and eye for eye (among others) with the party depending on circumstance, but I liked it for what it was trying to do. Utility was baked into its kit and now it's gone. It feels very homogenized when compared to the other jobs with the only defining features being what was shown in this video.
Also as a fellow SMN main I'm frustrated that we still only have Carbuncle as egi glams 😒

I mean, I don't blame you? I did appreciate mastering the 3-minute rotation, but honestly, I don't think I would've ever been able to do it at end game content in ShB. I do believe EW SMN definitely needs something that adds to its niche, maybe reintroducing Bio to manage on top of the regular rotation or something else that makes the job a bit more complicated...

I feel you. I tried Arcanist when I first began playing last year and I hated it. My pet was AOEing mobs and drawing in lots of Aggro and since its not a tank mechanic that draws aggro to it the mobs just ganked him over and over. While I did like my Pet having the ability to attack and do its own thing I di like they removed this as an issue because I couldn't get into it because I had to try and figure out how to approach any group of mobs and not just mass pull the lot with Carbuncle jumping in like a maniac. I kinda wish there was a halfstep back to allow for the summons to be a little more pet-like and not just a visual.

The complexity was never the draw for me, like it was for you. Though I do say, I do hope they add more of it in future updates and/or the next expansion, to expand on what we have laterally rather than making our rotation longer.

So I have a little confession, I have spent way too many hours playing FFXIV, beginning my journey as a clueless sprout, marveling at the liveliness of this incredible world of Final Fantasy. Completely clueless to MMO's, clueless on how to set up a hotbar, clueless to the path I have chosen as an arcanist. As the world began to shut down to brace itself for the full impact of the Coronavirus, I was pushing the very limits of jumping over obstacles in FFXIV.
Originally I didn't enjoy the casting times with the Arcanist, and to be blunt, I didn't like the idea of having a book as a weapon. I thought it was lame compared to something like the Astrologian providing aid with a literal mini solar system in her hands, or the righteous shield of a Paladin as he stood in watch, blade in his hand, ready for whatever might come his way. What was I to do with a book?
Then a friend that has been a long time veteran of the game showed me how he could summon the tiny versions of the primals I have faced in my earlier journeys. And then... I saw bahamut! At a moment, I lost all shame holding a book as my chosen weapon, I knew right then and there that I must continue my journey to learn the craft, and eventually be able to summon the ender of worlds. And by the time I ended my journey at the end of shadowbringers, with yet another powerful summon of Phoenix, I felt like my kit was complete and I was at last faced with the ultimate trial of my sanity as a human being......Learning the summoner rotation -__-
(Little did I know, spamming my dots wasn't how you actually play the class xD)
Eventually I became pretty hardcore into FFXIV, leveling every single job, whilst dipping my toes into the endless farm for glam and mounts in the game.
However, despite the endless grind that I eventually fell in love with, ever rewarding in my ventures, there was something missing. I never felt.... challenged. My thirst for savage has begun to take its roots. This was the period of time where I truly, and I really do mean truly fell in love with Summoner. Knowing every little detail, every mistake that I make within the two minute cycle, using tri-disaster at the precise moment the dots expired to not over extend the 30s cooldowns. Everything was ticking by the half minute mark, give me two minutes and I can lay down hellfire to the enemy. Sure the class had annoyances, Ifrit failing to cast the party buffs before Bahamut was clocking in for his 20 second shift, or the awkward moment when you have to manually cast your DoTs as you only have three tri-disasters for the whole two minutes, leaving 30s of awkward DoT timings. But you learn to live with it, you eventually learn to love it. A perfect class is just like a lover with a perfect personality. It sounds nice, but flaws are what makes us human. It is what gives the Summoner its personality. The discipline and commitment required to play the class to it's fullest potential, while learning to work around its flaws and all. This deep connection is what I have felt with this job. Dare I say, I was in love with it, although I would admit, I would need breaks from time to time lol.
Endwalker promised to fix all of the flaws for summoner. It promised a dedication to be faithful to the summoner of old. A summoner that I came back to experience after some time off the game... only to realize that I no longer recognized my favorite job. The Grimoire that I opened time and time again, was full of pages I did not recognize. I know a lot of people were excited for the new changes, and I agree with the changes to the pet AI and certain other aspects that came off as janky and outdated when playing the job. I still gave it a try, played through the entire expansion with her and even the first tier of savage. At the end of the day, I couldn't find it in myself to enjoy the new changes. I no longer felt the mental stimulation this job used to offer, and as I am writing this and looking back at the many words I had to say about this job, I guess it really is akin to a love lost. Lost to the winds of change, and although I miss the summoner of old, I am also glad that there are many players picking up the class and enjoying the new changes, whereas before they might have not even given it a try. I am not writing this as a complaint about the new summoner changes and about how I miss the class and I wish for the old summoner back. This is just a little story that I wished to share about my love for the job which no longer is with us. At least, not the one I fell in love with. The job that then showed me many great moments of this beautifully crafted world of FFXIV. This is my love letter to that summoner, tucked between the pages of that very first Grimoire.

    • @GayLPer
      @GayLPer 2 года назад +2

Very well written, you expressed your feelings about the old and new job very well. Even though I don't share your feelings, I can't help but applaud the time and effort you put into this.
Based off of this, have you considered Bard? While I never particularly enjoyed old SMN's complexity (though it didn't impede my enjoyment at all), I will say BRD's complexity does feel very good to me, even though it's more based off of priority than plotting out a specific rotation (though at least your opener is usually consistent enough)
Though maybe BRD is one of those things that's simple on paper but complex in practice. But it is definitely mentally stimulating to me.

    • @henryshin6187
      @henryshin6187 2 года назад

Yes I have actually! I enjoyed bard even in Shadowbringers. And now with the changes to your party buffs actually applying to yourself, along with having stacks whenever you get procs feels a lot better than it used to. The bard rotation was always enjoyable to me, but I think due to how FFXIV has server ticks and such, it makes the fast paced button mashing quite difficult to play for me personally. I enjoy machinist quite a bit, and it is my favorite ranged class. I tend to enjoy classes with less rng procs into their rotation due to the server ticks as I mentioned before.
I appreciate your comment on my little essay haha, thank you for being respectful. I think most of my emotions when writing that long essay was due to me coming to terms with leaving FFXIV for a while.
Xenos did a great video where he mentioned how combat in Endwalker just felt like an extension of Shadowbringers. And that might be why I felt a burnout recently, it felt as if I was doing the same thing as I did in Shadowbringers. And to a certain point, don’t fix what’s not broke I guess. But also, nothing much was added as well, lot’s of quality of life, but no new flavor to combat in FFXIV. So at the moment, I am taking a break but I have heard PvP is a lot of fun with the recent changes. I will go back one day, It's always home for me :)

I loved the old smn, but I also very much enjoy the new smn and use it as my "msq" job. It's what i tackle new content with for the first time. It's basically 4 dopamine hits a minute, but i can't deny that it does sometimes feel a little simple. Here's what i hope they add in the future:
1.) More for Carbuncle to do. I like that he's basically a defensive/ support pet as that is what he always was in previous entries in the series. But they already took searing light from him. From a practical point of view that makes sense, but if they take his shield too then he's literally just there to be a sentient pokeball. So i hope they either give him more to do or just remove him completely as a pet and just stick to the pre-egi carbuncles.
2.) The energy drain/siphon, fester, painflare, and ruin 4 abilities just feel like relics from an old age tacked on. I would love if they were incorporated into the rest of the job somehow. Perhaps we could be given an extra primal or two that are connected specifically to that to summon too? Or maybe if we were given a 3rd demi primal we could spend the aether stacks on shuffling which primal comes next instead of following a set pattern of bahamut to pheonix?
3.) Connected to what i said before, a 3rd demi summon.
I'm sure there is plenty more they could do but i think these changes could make it feel much better. I also wish theyd allow for petglamours for sch. I dont see why we dont have the option to glam the fairy into alphie's carbuncles. You know, for us "manly" men that dont wanna use fairies lmao.

I have to admit, even as someone who strongly prefers the simpler classes in the game (e.g. dnc, rdm, mch, war) I actually find smn almost too simple for its own good, to the point that the job feels incomplete even at 90. I'm hoping they find ways to use this rework as a starting reference then find other ways to flesh it out and give it a more interactive feel.
Another disadvantage of the class is since your Garuda/Ifrit/Titan stances are tied to first using Bahamut or Phoenix, if you die and get revived all you can do is cast Ruin until you can summon Bahamut again, which depending on when you died could leave you waiting upwards of 30 seconds to start up your main rotation again, giving smn arguably one of the harshest death penalties of any class in the game.

    • @tenjenk
      @tenjenk Год назад

tha definately seems to be the intention since it seems ideally made as a foundation from which to build multiple expansions worth of complexity atop of. More tiers of demi's and a trio of primals. Increased layers of smn flavored complexity.
Phoenix could get Shiva, Ramuh, Leviathan HW could bring Demi Alex with the warring Triad. SB perhaps provides Demi Shinryu with Susano, Tsukyumi and Lakhsmi but it seems more fitting for these to be mechanics, abilities or CDs. Plus they would probably want to avoid creating too many tiers for the summoning cycle.
Along those lines ShB could inspire a mechanic for the hybrid primals, not necessarily summoning them but changing the next tier into them. Same with EW lunar primals being a CD phase which boosts our primals.

Long time smn main and I have to say I am one of those who dislike new smn for alot of reasons. The issue is I still play it bc I dont like any of the other casters and my static already has a rpr(the only melee job I enjoy). The new smn would be fine if it was just little more complex and offer something to manage or build up too. I dont mind the idea of new smn and like what they show so far but I wish they did more. Right now at lvl 90 smn feels unfinished to me, it feels like a lvl 60 job and not a lvl 90 job. The video is really good tho and you did a good job pointing out the pos and the neg of smn. I just wish I enjoy it as much as others do and as much I enjoy SB and ShB smn. v.v Also hoping for a new caster in 7.0 that brige the huge gap between the casters right now in terms of dps, RDM and smn bascilly do the same dam while blm is way up on the charts. I like a caster to be in the middle of rdm/smn and blm.

The only thing I would change about Summoner is the level progression and unlocks of the summons.
I think the leveling journey would benefit greatly in giving you the bigboi summon versions of Ifrit, Garuda, Titan, Bahamut and Phoenix at lvl 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90 respectively to show your growing power as a summoner and have your character slowly collect the bigbois in your story.
As it stands now queueing for potentially lower than lvl90 content always feels like they take away the coolest parts of Summoner away entirely and while hitting 90 and finally getting the Big Three I find it just plain weird that the three primals we subjugated during the first part of FFXIV are the reward for the last part of FFXIV.
That is like putting the cart infront of the horse.
Give us Ifrit, Garuda and Titan first I say.
After all the core rotation basically revolves around the fire, earth and air phase anyway.

The main issue was that as of ShB, SMN had hit an absolute roadblock in terms of growth and creative stagnancy with what they could do with its mechanics moving forward. Plus how it was basically an arcanist with only 2-3 actual summon abilities we ever used. It had to be scrapped and remade entirely. I do miss the dots tho.
there definatley seems to be an intention with its design where it seems to be a foundation from which to build multiple expansions worth of complexity atop of without ending up like the previous build did. There is space for more tiers of demi's and a trio of primals.
Same with EW lunar primals being a CD phase which boosts our primals.

the problem i have with smn is that it just does not fit in the caster mold anymore(above level 50). which is why its memed as the 4th phisical ranged. i feel like the class feels better at level 50 then at level 90 in that regards cause it fits in that caster mold and ads the missing complexity which is cast times and knowing when and when not to move. I think my biggest problem is not actual with the class but the lack of clarity of the intention of the class unlike what we got for the sam and ninja 6.1 changes. i feel like if the devs where more clear on the current stance on smn and there intentions there would be much less of a divide. with the 6.1 they specifically stated that if there is changes that we don't like post it on the forms.

Im a legacy player so ive had quite a up and down relationship with smn. It was my first job i ever completed ARR msq and early endgame with. But i couldnt ever stick with it for long. it lacked the "feel" and aesthetics and style of a real smn. Hw smn was a step in the right direction and i liked the dreadwyrm trance focused style. Then SB summoner got Bahamut which was really cool but the dot focus and the changes didnt flow together right. Was mixing too many concepts trying to please everyone imo. Shadowbringers smn was one of the worst iterations of it, and having a 3 min rotation sucked especially if you died at any point which messed you up for the entire fight. Phoenix was a nice addition but still felt clunky to use. EW smn is where i finally felt like i was playing a summoner. Yes, its simple, but it really embodies a way that a summoner from the series would fight but still in a unique way. Its good, efficient, and nails the feel of smn that was missing for me, and i love it. People really overglorify old smn, it had positives but it wasnt this perfect identity they act like it was tbh. If you want a more busy complex rotation, go play ninja. I love ninja, and mained it for a long time. it will fill your niche if thats the only thing you require to be satisfied.

I don't care about complex rotations, but I started the game with smn, because wanted to play a pet class - old smn relied on pets (admittedly a bit less in recent expansions, when they could no longer take aggro) - now the summons are just a decoration and you might just as welljust get a toggle and cast the spells yourself. The new smn is quite cool, but it's an entirely different class, and we didn't get anything to replace the old one.

It's easy and good to start but it's boring for me now, I started playing this game when I heard there was a class that had a static 2 minutes rotation that people consider the hardest rotation in the game, that's the reason I started playing FFXIV, cause of the promise of an in depth rotation and this is not it anymore sadly... I still love Bahamut and Phoenix but not seeing the 1-2 1-2 in Phoenix sucks too, I loved the animation on the second attack and now it's just an AoE and the amount of time I see it is limited. Anyways, summons feel epic but the rotation is really disappointing and I would rather play old summoner.

How would you feel about Aether mechanics being cut from the Summoner Kit and traded for a second primal rotation? I mean, no longer having Energy Drain/Syphon, Fester and maybe Painflare(could it be upgraded into something else?).
Say, Ifrit-Titan-Garuda working for Bahamuth demi, and Phoenix granting Ramuh-Leviathan-Shiva. Maybe they could bring back the DOT damage element people always miss from older smn.
Also, if we could do away with the currently pointless Physick, I personally would love for Carbuncle, if not transformed, granting additional heal/dmg or something like the SCH fairy does if it's left on it's own, so we could have carbuncle animations back. It would be a single heal focused on you for soloing/auto attacking whatever you're hiting rn, and do away with physick.

Curious what "shenanigans" you're referring to when it comes to WoW's combat system. One of the things I appreciated back when I played WoW was how they could make even simple specs like Fire Mage and Arms Warrior engaging to play. I think a lot of it has to do with procs and RNG which is something XIV doesn't do nearly as much but achieves much closer parity in DPS as a result.

    • @zigrakudo4092
      @zigrakudo4092 Год назад

There's actually a way to make RNG "less random" for procs, and I wish this was implemented. It's like having a bowl of ten different flavored candies. To get the flavor you want, you keep picking candies until you get the flavor before you refill the bowl. It's basically guaranteed that you will get the flavor you want in at most ten tries. Instead of the normal RNG where you take a candy and immediately put it back in if it's not the flavor you want. I just hate the fact that 50% chance can still be a no-proc in 10 hits if you have very bad luck.

BUT after reaching level 53+ and getting a taste of harder raids I sometimes mess up my easy rotations lol. After memorizing my rotations by heart I can finally focus on learning the mechanics of each raid/dungeon without having to worry about my rotations so this is really good for people who are new to the mechanics of GCD, OGCD and weaving etc..... also the fact that it levels scholar is so worth it (because I do plan to try to make all classes to 90)

I started playing this game around August 2021. And coming from wow where I played warlock and hunter primarily, I naturally gravitated towards SMN. It was pretty neat, but changed while I was still leveling up and doing msq stuff.
I really liked the new aesthetic and flow of the job. However I miss the pet feeling part of the job. Hopefully one day they introduce a new job with pet things.
For now this is still the most visually and thematically appealing job to me. Though mechanically it needs some spice.

For the second question: The ultimate has not been cleared yet, so its most likely a 3rd party program force-loading in the weapon with the tank armor

I was one of the weird people who loved old Summoner just fine, though admittedly the ghosting was driving me up the wall.
I love new Summoner even more, though, it just feels so much better.
People who complain about it being too easy, however, are also right, and I say this as someone who is generally "Just because something is complex doesn't make it engaging."
However, let me follow that up with... "Yeah, it's too easy *right now*."
Summoner is effectively a whole new class, with Arcanist and Summoner being rebuilt from the ground up (side note: the only spell Scholar gets from Arcanist is Resurrection, which is hilarious because SCH Physick is actually a different spell from ACN Physick since Shadowbringers)
Because of this, and the previous complaint about the freaking 2 minute long rotation (which, on paper, does sound kind of ridiculous), they definitely wanted to aim for making something simple and easy to approach. That doesn't mean they won't *add* complexity (and yes, I know people are probably cynical about that statement since SAM got Kaiten removed - I do not blame them) it just means that they're building a solid foundation before building upon that in a future expansion/update.
And honestly, I'm fine with that, too.

I like new SMN, it is a little too simple IMO but it's a very good baseline to add onto in new expansions, it's SO good in new content or with randoms and sprouts and the damage is very high for how simple it is compared to say, BLM. It's fun, it's my go to DPS for DF dailies and PVE content, plus SCH(my actual main) is extremely complex so you get the best of both worlds.

    • @royox

Nah don't worry. People is very dramatic. Old SMN was overcomplicated with a 3 min rotation and had no logic lorewise. A "mage focusing on summoning but also on dots but also on non-elemental spells" so you had your trance phase, your full minute of spamming Ruin, your "re-dot" moment and again a trance phase. It was boring. Now at least at lvl90 it gives the player the options to optimize the rotation of primals to improve your performance. You won't have any trouble learning other jobs. Most of melee jobs are based on a 1-2-3/1-2-4 combo and you fill the gaps with OGCD skills. Then you have the BLM that it's difficulty is based 100% on the encounter and RDM is literally brain dead.

  • @warkiller

Endwalker Summoner might appear to be really easy, but there are times where you actually need to think about what you should do at specific parts of specific fights.
Like you have to plan when you will use Garuda or Titan during a part of the fight requiring you to move a lot vs when you can stay put for a while and thus be safe in using Ifrit.
P3S is one such fight for me where I had to switch up my normal primal rotation at certain parts because of when mechanics happen in the fight.
Endwalker Summoner might be easier, but it kept, or now has an element similar to how Black Mage players need to know the fight so they can optimize their movement to be as little as possible.

Currently playing free trial and brought both black mage and Summoner to Lv 53
I agree with the list here, Summoner is much easier to understand and weave than black mage and you don't depend on procs with Summoner (BLM thundercloud and firestarter)
SMN is a Great class to start with the magic dps group
