Some thoughts on this: 2020 is a great time to start a RUclips channel. People need to be entertained and informed more than ever. But as you said, nobody should expect instant fame and fortune. Do it for fun, to help others, to interact with like-minded people -- while coming up with videos people actually want to watch, of course. Personally, I have a DIY-themed channel and I made my first 30 bucks 3 years after uploading my first video, so whoever decides to start right now, better be patient and passionate about being and internet person.

Thank you for this information. it is a bit like looking into the future as I myself started a youtube channel in 2020 on the noted passion front / hobby angle, due to the lockdown cancelling all the gigs for my band. It has kept the band going, our audience engaged and I have made some new friends, so on balance I am glad I did. Keep rocking!

    Hi,
I am one of those Train (Model) sets (layouts) that you mentioned on this with my small channel and I started because watching our small 1.76 scale trains appear huge on a 43 in tv is great and you get the ability you see your layout from places you could not live and then you upload them to the wider world and you find other viewers like them to but YT is better than that as when you start you are on a trip of learning that can take you as far as you want to go. I have now reached the stage where it is the whole experience I like not just playing trains but the filming, editing (which I absolutely love) to uploading and seeing how they perform and if the subscribers grow that is a bonus. I never set out to make money and even though I am getting near the threshold to do so never will as that is not what I want out of it and the strangest reason for doing it is when I depart this world I may be remembered when somebody clicks on one of my video's and enjoys it. This was an interesting video and made to your usual very high standard so well done, keep safe and well in these troubled times as we go into another lock down.
    Cheers Robert.

I do Plan D. I have a strange way of thinking with you tube, I do a daily vlog, its usually about 3 minutes long talking about what I did the day before to move me forward with a dream of opening a little tourist attraction. Its done to give me a kick everyday, I have to do something or I will have nothing to say on the next day's Vlog, it really doesn't matter if no one else watches them (they don't), I don't link or adverts. but I do enjoy doing them and it really worked in getting me into gear as we should now have the attraction open next Spring :) But your Vlogs are a high light of Saturdays for me, so thank you!

I've also taken the same exact route as you by doing a variety of stuff on my channel. Some videos do underperform, but if I can get a video ranking in RUclips search then it's possible for that video to get 1k+ views over the next weeks or years. When I first started 4.5 years ago, my "dreams" of being famous were quickly crushed by the realities of the oversaturated platform of RUclips.

At least you’ve got off your bottom and your making videos, because your content is so varied i find myself picking and choosing, for example because I’m trying to grow a RUclips channel naturally I’m drawn to any titles you have surrounding that topic. I couldn’t care less about lego lol. I guess its the same for someone into lego. My channel is new and I only have 4 videos so I’ve got a long time to go as the average video takes me 2-3 days to make an edit as I’m making something not just talking about it so to make 100 videos is going to take me a lifetime.
I’m rambling love your channel I love your uniqueness, your subscriber count shows people like your stuff, maybe it’s your personality why people subscribe to you? Not sure. Any how congratulations from a expat living in the USA.

I set up a separate YT Channel dedicated to "Irish Trad. Music" around 2006. Within no time I was getting thousands of hits and subscribers to beat the band. I've noticed in the past couple of years if I upload a video I'm lucky if I get a thousand hits..As of now I have over 16,000 subscribers and over 22 million hits on the channel. This is because (a) I ran out of material (b) Other folks copped on to the same idea and have much more resources than I have...It doesn't really effect me I did it just for the love & pleasure it gave me sharing stuff that most folks that had never heard this music before..

The RUclips market is getting harder and harder now. Noticed recently that alot of the channels I subscribe to have said that their views and subscriptions are diminishing. Their revenue has dropped like a stone. Some have said that they may give it up.

    • @SocialHigh
      @SocialHigh 3 года назад

On the contrary. It's becoming easier as the drop off is high. Good content STILL gets great views. I subscribed off the back of your earnings video in the hope I would see more of the same. I was unaware at the time (and too lazy to even click on the channel) that you don't upload content like that as a rule. After about a month and some more uploads, I was convinced that your channel was not for me. I unsubscribed... Literally the next day, youtube recommended another one of your videos and I clicked on it just so I could check whether or not I had ACTUALLY unsubscribed... I had... And your video was happily playing away on my screen. It was at that moment I realised, I do want to watch your content and re subscribed. Some of it is completely irrelevant to me, and some of it isn't... But you, YOU are consistently entertaining regardless and that has made me a fulltime fan. To be honest, I would watch your videos even if the content was 'how to blink' or 'what is a finger'... Carry on!

  • @MercifullUK

I think I’ve mentioned this before in a comment but it’s unfair now that new youtubers cannot join the partner program to earn money until they reach a certain number of views and subscribers. It’s tough to start a channel and there’s no incentive to keep producing in those early days. The current system favours those already big or those with financial backing to get through that early stage. Why shouldn’t a user who regularly gets 500 views get a share of the ad revenue?... Why shouldn’t someone who uploads a clip of a cat that goes viral get a share of the money?

  • @mrj4615

It's getting harder and harder to be successful on RUclips because over 1 billion people have downloaded TikTok, which is getting people used to consuming faster, shorter, 'watch-and-forget' video content with minimal adverts. Since the rise of TikTok my viewer engagement on YT has plummeted. A typical 10 minute video used to be watched for 6-8 minutes on average but now it's more like 2-4 minutes. That level of engagement does not please the algorithm and my main channel has gone from 9 million impressions per month to just 1.5 million. I'm lucky to have built up a large subscriber base but I see many newcomers to my field struggling to gain any momentum at all.

If I wanted to get rich and famous, I would have left this behind years ago. Because its a hobby that essentially costs me nothing, its still fun and I've got this little loyal group of people that comment and like everything I post. RUclips used to be by the people, for the people. Nowadays they're turning it into a version of Netflix. They promote their own shows and the channels of celebrities they've signed up to put content on here. If people on here now have those kind of options, what are they going to choose?
That's a huge chunk of viewers being directed away from potentially finding you. How can the ordinary man compete with Will Smith? You might say that those big shows and celebrity channels bring more people to the platform, but they're here for that show/celebrity, I'd guess that 1 in 1m will bother to click on a small channel's thumbnail, and that's even if RUclips promote it in the first place, which is becoming less and less likely.
Thing is, there's still no real viable competition to AdTube, so it'll just keep getting worse and worse until, eventually, it'll become so unrecognisable that something else _will_ pop up and the 'bread & butter' channels will start leaving in their droves, and YouFlix will have fully converted into just another streaming site for shows, movies, and music (which, I'm fairly sure, is their ultimate aim).
