I got in to see only the strong in cinema and got kicked out for being to young and my brother watched it and told me how good it was and I had to wait for video to see it and then watched it over and over as I did with a lot of martial arts films in the 90s...
Great time to be a kid and fan of these kind of films

This movie changed my life and many of my friends and we didn't see it until the late 90's maybe early 2000's. We trained ourselves from only having this movie and whatever books we could find online we even had a presentation in front of our whole Highschool for Multi Cultural day and one of my friends became a Capoeria teacher and runs his own school now.

The first time I saw Only The Strong was back in 1996 if I am not wrong. I was 20 years old, coming back from Laney College in Oakland CA, turned on thr TV, which was on HBO, and I heard the intro, dropped my bookbag and sat down to watch the film. I wasn't expecting anything great, since HBO and Showtime at the time would play one too many martial arts B movies, which in my mind were a dime a dozen, but this one really blew me away. The script wasn't outstanding, but the fight choreography, the introduction of Capoera as a martial arts, and also Mark Dacascos' acting was really amazing. Not to mention Paco Prieto as the main villain made you really want to hate him. Plus the message of no matter where you started but what you can accomplish later on to better your life, is one that still is held by me to this day. I was able to find a streaming of Only the Strong and watched again with my eight year old son(the baby that's in my profile pic) and he enjoyed it as much as I did. Did I mention that my son is now a yellow belt in Tae Kwon Do? Yes. He's been inspired by watching the Greats that you, me, and many others that follow your channel as well. He's already talking about hitting the weights to look like Van Damme in Lionheart, which I told him once he turns 15, I will train him at that time. Thank you for another great video. And yes, if Only The Strong 2 gets released, I want to be in line to get a sneak preview of it. Kudos

I'm from a podunk town in Michigan, and I remember seeing a commercial for only the strong, and I couldn't wait to see it, but it never came to to the theater, and I figured it was because of the rural area. It finally came to video, and me and my martial arts friends rented it, and I looked everywhere to train in capoeira. I finally came to LA, and trained with Mestre Amin

I remember that in my country Indonesia, Only The Strong was very successful and big hit in Indonesia movie theatre at that time. For the first time, we people in Indonesia know martial arts called Capoeira. The stories and martial arts action of this movie is very beautiful, especially for us the people of Indonesia where martial arts known as Pencak Silat is our culture and Pencak Silat is known for artistic movements just like Capoeira.

Those are my words, Drive is excelent on every aspect, I thing noone ever moved like Mark in that movie, its the most bad ass fighter on screen ever, whole idea of "perfect killer with some shit in his chest speeding him up", you are not even mad that it is undercranked because it make sence, and that speed in combination with his gymnastic precision into kung fu style fighting, maaaan I have even now goosebums as I remembering him. And ofcourse great chemistry with Kadeem Harrison, even Brittany Murphy was great.

I definitely agree with Viking Samurai, that Mark Dacascos portrayed the lead role in Only The Strong, as the perfect candidate who could act, also perform the required martial arts manoeuvres of Capoeira to the extent of a believable, seasoned expert, or teacher.
More often then not in certain films the martial artist is skilled physically speaking, however not great at acting out the dramatic scenes convincingly. Then by contrast a good dramatic thespian, is not able believably perform the required, high level combat techniques, also perform their stunts, without being doubled by a martial arts, stunt performer.
With Mark Dacascos we got the entire package! It is as if he was born to play this role. I honestly hope that somehow there will be a sequel in the pipeline, also why not similar to the Karate Kid films, not get its own spin-off series? Last but not least I hope that they will, relaunch this great film on Blu-ray with tons of behind the scenes, exclusive action choreography footage, training, interviews and so forth, along with the history of Capoeira. Thank you yet again Mark Dacascos and Viking Samurai 🇲🇽🇦🇺🥋🙏Osu!

The popularity of "Only The Strong" owes much to HBO, which in the mid-90's used to screen the movie every Sunday afternoon for about two years straight. This was before streaming, when you could only get HBO via cable. They specifically targeted Sunday afternoons because they knew kids would be at home, watching TV. And they also saw that the numbers were high when they would screen it during those times, so they continued screening on it on Sundays (and sometimes also on Saturdays) without let-up. I was an HBO subscriber back then (still am) so I took note and was happy to see that "Only The Strong" seemed to own that Sunday afternoon time slot for such an extended period of time. All those kids (pre-teens and teenagers) who saw it back then are in their 30's and 40's now and seem to be looking back on it with fond memories.

We're singing Paraneuuuuu while Van Damme was fighting Chong Li. Hahaha Fond memories indeed - for everyone!!

Ok. Great interview. Love it cos you got Mark on the channel. Love them both (Mark & Paco) in the movie. This movie also inspired and motivated me in a lot of ways. I was just bodybuilding up till that point when I discovered this movie. I was already interested and was practicing some martial arts but nothing fancy. And I was also a big fan of old Chinese Kung Fu movies, especially Jackie's ( who wouldn't be in the 70s & 80s?). But this movie single-handedly pushed my motivation to train for total fitness (strength, power, muscle development, flexibility, agility, prowess, coordination, acrobatics, speed) to beast level! So, that's how impactful this movie was on me ( and cousins and friends as well). So, now the conclusion to all this after 30 years and the only logical thing to do now is, THE SEQUEL MUST BE MADE!!!! 😁😁😅

Look at Bloodsport 2, Kickboxer 2, etc. Some films work as a one off. I'd rather see Mark make a different Martial Arts film. Joan Chen, the 90's Judge Dread, Armante Santi's girlfriend and partner in crime, anyone? Marc man tell me you and her we're getting it on back then, she was a fine looking woman back in the day. It's trippy Viking samurai man, I didn't know he knew her or that she helped with the movie in any small way. I love watching these enterviews.

The best lead role from Dacascos is "Crying Freeman" for sure.

Nah for me it was American Samurai....I even named my channel after him lol
Shame the sword fight at the end, got cut short against David Bradley.
Least we got Phan-Xu vs Kenjiro Sanga Evil vs Evil. I actually thought Kenjiro would lose that fight

Cobra Kai vs Only the Strong movie crossover event! Daniel LaRusso teams up with Louis Stevens and Terry Silver and Silverio team up. There students must face off of course. I'd watch it. 😁

Well, this was part of another video talking about Fight Choreography and how he stays in shape these days, but I figured I'll release that one separate, then the whole interview in its entirety, that way I'll have those and a few other videos that I'll already have uploaded and can release every few days while I'm on vacation so that the channel stays active.
