      I saw him around 2005 or so, when still alive, but he was not in top form but still a genius, drugs impacted his life and talent. Other interviews he said he was blacklisted on many radio stations, impacting his income in the 1970s and 1980s, because he vocalized inequality

    I first heard mr.Scott around 1989 when I was too naive to understand what he was talking about, yes I knew his words, but not what was driving them. now I am 44, this man was a literary genius

    Gil might just be the only brother, spoken word, funk, soul, blues jazz artist and griot against whose videos on RUclips you only read positive and uplifting comments. The man gave us so much. He worked with fabulous musicians over the years who were disciples of sorts. RIP bro Gil, miss you ever so much.

    "...there may be some words out there that don't mean nuthin'..." and there are, words like 'jurisdiction' and 'authority'; pure genius.
    When I listen to Gil Scott-Herron I'm torn between two feelings, the first is awe at his clever use of language and his ability to convey a sense of the anger and despair of social injustice and the ghetto. The second is sadness that his words are still "...so damn relevant".

    Flatone, Thanks for posting this. I was a young, impressionable teenager when I saw GSH perform at the U of Hartford (CT) in 1975. He did this piece. Still relevant today, 45+ years later.

      I saw GSH at a club in Houston as well, back in the day. We might have sat by one another @ that club and didn't know it. I was 18yo then. He performed the dot dot did it routine then as well.

    When people hear that the POTUS won his first money through spoken word, few bothered to check it out. If people really wanted to understand Barack Obama, they should listen to Gil Scott-Heron!
    People spend far too much time listening to what we dance to, with no clue about what we LISTENED to. This explained everything Dad was screaming about during the evening news or reading the Washington Post. But we still had to sneak Gill into the house in Jackson 5 album covers.
