    So a story about being an audience member at a low turn out show. Back in 1984/85 I went to see Simon Townshend at a club in Boston. He was touring after the moderate MTV and chart success of "I'm The Answer". The club held about 400 people, there were 9 or 10 of us (including my date, who didn't know the music at all). As the band walked out on stage, you could see the disappointment on all of their faces. Simon stepped up to the mic and said (paraphrase here) " Well, if we're gonna do this, we need all of you down here by the front of the stage" (everyone was spread all around the hall). Everyone moved to the edge of the stage. The band proceeded to rip through an excellent performance, pausing throughout the show to tell stories, ask and answer questions, etc.. In all, a great lesson in professionalism and making the most of what you've got. Simon earned my lifelong respect and admiration that night...almost 40 years ago...and I'm still telling this story.

    The gigs with little-to-no audience are actually the ones where an artist discovers how much they love the craft of music, irrespective of applause. So they're absolutely necessary to go through, in my opinion.

    • @aylbdrmadison1051

      And it's an art of it's own to learn to "play to an audience," and I think that's another thing easier to learn with a small audience. But then some do get thrown right in the fire while they're still cold, and do great anyway.

    Whenever I get in a situation where there is just a few people at my show, I go the extra mile to put on a steller performance for them. Those people paid to see us and they stick around for the whole set, they deserve the show to be as hype as if there were hundreds in the audience. Then afterwards they hang out with while we tear down and it is always such a great experience.

  • @chrismuratore4451
    @chrismuratore4451 Год назад +7

    Most of the shows ive played have been open mics with limited audience. Its almost always a good experience. Often times I'll go to bow out after my 2 or 3 tracks but if its a really thin crowd, people will often encourage me to play a few more.
    Small crowds can definitely be rewarding

    Re: the last one -- I'm not interested in becoming a real jazz guitarist, but I do want to hsve some jazz guitar skills. Specifically, I would love to be able to play Great American Songbook standards in a chord melody style, I want to be able to play Bossa Nova guitar, and I'd like to be able to play solid swing rhythm. The problem is that I get the impression that it's not possible to do this by dabbling in it, as a dilettante. It seems like if you want to develop any jazz proficiency at all, you have to totally commit to it. And there's too much music and too many different music styles I like and would like to play to commit 100% to anything.

    • @Kaz999998
      @Kaz999998 Год назад +1

      Thats kinda how I feel about jazz myself. I feel like it's very theory heavy when it comes to chords progressions/changes and rhythms. It doesn't feel like something you can walk into and pick up pretty easily which puts me off from wanting to learn it. Definitely feels like a genre you have to go all in to get anything useful out of it.

    • @Big_Bag_of_Pus
      @Big_Bag_of_Pus Год назад

      @Benjamin Decimo Theory doesn't put me off on the surface -- I've always kinda liked music theory, or at least the parts that pertain to jazz and popular music. It's the work necessary to internalize it, to make it reflex, so that you don't even have to think for a microsecond to apply it, it just comes out of you. That scares me off, because given the universe of stuff I don't know and can't do, it seems a huge commitment to start working on that and giving up on literally everything else.

    • @Kaz999998
      @Kaz999998 Год назад

      @@Big_Bag_of_Pus Yeah, honestly I'm not anti theory or anything, I just can't be bothered to learn anything outside of what interests me. Like I know some scales, arpeggios and whatnot, but for me personally I can't be bothered to learn the names of notes and chord shapes. Then again I'm not like a lead player; while I do dabble in it I'm more interested in rhythm guitar, and for the genres I play I haven't found much utility for Jazz. At least not yet.
