My sister started rooting plants with her students. When we cut back our plants her students get the cuttings and grow full plants! We usually start them with pothos, succulents, spider plants and heart leaf philodendron. Then during the second half of the year we get them some more “rare or collector” cuttings like scindapsus, monstera, rhaphidaphora tetrasperma, adansonii, philo micans. She and I recycle our nursery pots and slip pots to the kids. They love it! In an area where kids do not get exposed to plants, or growing or really even nurtured themselves, it’s a great thing for them because it teaches them so much.

I am in Florida and I don't own any "knock out" plants .... about 70% of my plants are rescued from my neighborhood or a few from my tenants that abandoned their plants when they move. The most I have paid for a plant was $20 for my moonlight truebii

I know this is an older post but I want to chime in on your comment.
I have found that plant people "use to be" very generous and willing to share knowledge and plants....as I still dom
Howecer, the newer plant people seem to thinknit is a "get rich quick" scheme. In my area they are selling individual pothos, etc nodes for $5 and up and not even rooted. To me this is a scam and gives the plant community a bad name.

Someone in my neighborhood has a plant swap stand in their front yard. It's been pretty lean recently, but now that we are well into growing season, it is filling up. I got several cuttings today and a full grown Chinese Evergreen that someone donated because they didn't have a good place for it where it was happy. I think it will do well on my back porch. I left a couple of ficus elastica cuttings.

I have one a friend gave me as a handful of spiderettes about 4 years ago. Oddly it isn't putting out any babies of it's own yet. My understanding is these need to be rootbound first. So maybe I used too big a pot and it is still growing into it. Maybe this year.

??? I've always run into the thing with snake plant water props, that the fancy ones, come back with just the standard species. For the fancy ones though, there's always lots of true pups. I also kept getting these odd grass-like baby plants in some f my pots on the floor. Turned out they were baby spider plants coming up from seeds. Those will come back as the green ones. Another whole category of plants you should never have to buy is tradescantias, they grow like weeds. Then there's the plants that you can grow from leaves, like all the kalanchoes and even the begonias. /with begonias you just need a pot in a plastic bag and you can turn one leaf into several babies.

I have yet to successfully get a pup to survive after cutting it off the mother. I'm sure there's a "wanted" poster for me somewhere. I've lost so many. 😕

It’s understandable that they wouldn’t respond especially if you’re a stranger to them. I always say it’s best to make relationships with people first, and then have those conversations. Otherwise it feels invasive
